Does Washington ESD unemployment back pay to filing date?
I'm confused about how back pay works with unemployment claims. I filed my Washington ESD claim about 6 weeks ago but there were some issues with my employer verification that delayed everything. My claim finally got approved last week. Will I get back pay for all those weeks I was waiting, or do I only get paid from when it was approved? I've been struggling financially this whole time and really need to know if that money is coming.

Yes, you should get back pay to your filing date as long as you were eligible during those weeks. Make sure you filed your weekly claims for each week you were unemployed, even while your claim was pending.

•I did file my weekly claims but they all showed as pending. Should I see the back pay in my next deposit?

•It usually takes 1-2 business days after approval for back pay to process. Check your claim history online to see if the payments show as processed.

•How long did it take for you to actually receive the money after approval?

You'll get back pay for any week you were eligible and filed a weekly claim. The key is making sure you filed those weekly claims during the waiting period. If you missed any weeks, you might be able to request those through Washington ESD customer service, but it's much harder.

•Good luck getting through to customer service though. I've been trying for weeks to fix an issue with mine.

•I had success using Claimyr.com to get through to an actual Washington ESD agent. They have a service that calls you back when they connect with someone. There's a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that explains how it works. Saved me hours of being on hold.

Wait, so if my claim is still in adjudication but I've been filing weekly claims, I'll get back pay when it's approved? I thought I had to wait until approval to start getting anything.

Demi Hall
•Correct, as long as you keep filing your weekly claims during adjudication, you'll get back pay for eligible weeks once approved.

•That's such a relief! My claim has been in adjudication for over a month.

•A month?? That's ridiculous. The system is so broken.

I thought back pay was automatic but turns out I missed filing one weekly claim during my waiting period and lost that week's benefits completely. Make sure you don't skip any weeks!

•Oh no! Can you still request that week somehow?

•I tried but they said it was too late. You only have a limited window to file missed claims.

•Actually, you can sometimes request missed weeks if you have good cause. Worth calling Washington ESD to ask.

THE WHOLE SYSTEM IS DESIGNED TO SCREW PEOPLE OVER. They make it confusing on purpose so you mess up and lose benefits.

•i mean its frustrating but they did pay my back pay like they said they would

•You're one of the lucky ones. I know people who waited months and got nothing.

To clarify the back pay process: Washington ESD will pay you for any week where you were unemployed, eligible, and filed a weekly claim, dating back to your benefit year begin date. The payment covers your waiting week too if you served it.

•What's a waiting week? I keep seeing that term but don't understand it.

•Washington eliminated the waiting week requirement, so you don't have to worry about it anymore. You can get paid for your first week of unemployment.

•Wait, really? I thought there was still a waiting week in Washington.

Just went through this exact situation. Filed in early December, got approved mid-January, received 6 weeks of back pay within 4 days of approval. The system works if you follow the rules.

•That gives me hope! Did you have to do anything special or did it just show up automatically?

Melina Haruko
•Completely automatic. Just made sure I filed every single weekly claim during the waiting period.

be careful about the job search requirements during your back pay period too. if you didnt do job searches for those weeks they might make you pay some back

Elliott luviBorBatman
•Oh shoot, I wasn't doing job searches during the first few weeks because I thought my claim wasn't active yet.

•You should be fine. Job search requirements typically start after your claim is established, not during the initial adjudication period.

•really? i thought you had to search from day one

If you're having trouble getting answers about your back pay status, I'd recommend trying Claimyr to talk to someone at Washington ESD. Much easier than the regular phone system.

•Is that the callback service someone mentioned earlier? How much does it cost?

•Yeah, it's a callback service. I'm not sure about pricing but it was worth it to avoid hours on hold trying to reach Washington ESD.

Quick question - does back pay include the extra federal money that was available last year, or just regular state benefits?
0 coins
Demi Hall
•The federal pandemic programs ended in 2021. Current back pay would only include regular Washington state unemployment benefits.

I got my back pay but it was less than I expected. Turns out they deducted taxes even though I didn't elect to have taxes withheld. Anyone else experience this?

Kara Yoshida
•You can change your tax withholding election in your Washington ESD account settings. But you'll owe taxes on unemployment income either way, so withholding might actually help you.

Demi Lagos
•I just prefer to handle taxes myself at the end of the year rather than have it automatically deducted.

The back pay calculation can be tricky if you had any part-time work during the waiting period. Make sure Washington ESD correctly calculated your weekly benefit reduction for any earnings.

•I did have a few days of part-time work. How do I check if they calculated it right?

Mason Lopez
•Check your payment history online. It should show your gross weekly benefit amount and any deductions for earnings. If it looks wrong, you can appeal the calculation.

Just remember that unemployment back pay is taxable income, so don't spend it all without setting some aside for taxes!

If anyone's still having trouble reaching Washington ESD about back pay questions, I used that Claimyr service someone mentioned and finally got through. The agent was able to explain exactly when my back pay would be processed and what amount to expect.

•I might try that if I don't see my back pay by next week. Thanks for the update!
