Does ESD process and pay out unemployment benefits on weekends?

I'm waiting on several weeks of back-payments from ESD that were held up during adjudication (finally resolved on Thursday). My account shows the payments as 'processed' but not 'paid' yet. Does anyone know if ESD processes and sends payments on weekends? Or do I need to wait until Monday for them to actually hit my account? Getting kinda desperate as rent is due soon and I've been behind on everything while waiting for these payments to come through.

From my experience, ESD doesn't actually process payments on weekends. Their system might update some statuses in the background, but the actual payment processing only happens on business days. If your adjudication was resolved Thursday, you might see the money Tuesday or Wednesday depending on your payment method (direct deposit is faster than debit card).

Thanks for the info! That's disappointing but makes sense. I have direct deposit set up, so hopefully it'll come through by Tuesday. It's just frustrating waiting when bills are piling up.

That's not entirely true. Their automated systems DO run on weekends - claims can still be processed through the system on weekends, they just don't get actually paid out until the next business day. I've seen status changes happen on Saturdays before, but never actual payment releases.

The ESD payment system follows banking business days. While their computer systems may update claim statuses 24/7, the actual fund transfers only process Monday-Friday (excluding holidays). If your adjudication was resolved Thursday, the payment might be processed Friday, but wouldn't hit your account until Monday or Tuesday depending on your bank's processing times. One important note: if your payment status shows as "processed" but not "paid" yet, that usually means it's queued up in their system and will be released during the next payment cycle. You can check your ESD account under "payment history" to see if it shows a payment date yet.

I checked the payment history and it shows 'processed' with yesterday's date but no actual payment date. Guess I'll have to wait until at least Monday to see movement. Really wish they'd operate on weekends considering how many people depend on these payments for basic necessities.

My cousin works at a bank and says ACH transfers (which is how ESD sends payments) don't process on weekends at all, so even if ESD wanted to send payments on weekends, the banking system wouldn't process them until Monday anyway.

I was in your exact situation last month! Had 6 weeks of back payments finally get approved after adjudication, and it was torture waiting for the money to actually arrive. In my case, they were marked as "processed" on a Wednesday, but the funds didn't hit my account until the following Monday. ESD definitely doesn't release payments on weekends - trust me, I was checking my account obsessively every hour! If you're in a really tight spot waiting for the payment, you might want to try calling ESD directly to see if they can expedite things. I know getting through to them is nearly impossible though. I finally had success using Claimyr (claimyr.com) - they got me connected to an actual ESD agent in about 15 minutes when I'd been failing for days. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3. The agent couldn't speed up my payment but at least confirmed exactly when it would arrive which helped my anxiety.

Thanks for sharing your experience! That's exactly what I was afraid of - more waiting. I've been trying to get through to ESD all week with no luck. Might check out that Claimyr service if I don't see any movement by Monday afternoon. At least knowing for sure when it'll arrive would help me make arrangements with my landlord.

ive been on unemployment since february and they NEVER pay on weekends. system updates sometimes but money never moves till business days. also sometimes my bank holds it for an extra day even after esd sends it so thats another thing to watch for

this is why i always tell people to keep some emergency savings even when on unemployment cause esd is so unreliable with timing

That's not really helpful advice for someone already waiting on payments? Like, obviously having savings would be better, but if they had savings they probably wouldn't be posting about desperately waiting for their benefits. Most people on unemployment have already exhausted their savings.

Something I've noticed that might be helpful - if your payment status changes to "paid" on a Friday after about 2pm, it usually won't hit your bank until Tuesday due to the weekend delay plus processing time. The ESD website doesn't explain this anywhere, but it's been consistent in my experience. Different banks also have different processing times for incoming ACH transfers.

That's good to know, thanks! Mine changed to "processed" Friday morning, but still hasn't updated to "paid" yet. I'll keep checking throughout the weekend, but sounds like Tuesday is probably the earliest I might see anything based on what everyone's saying.

Just to clarify something important: there's a difference between "processed" and "paid" in the ESD system. "Processed" means your payment has been approved and is queued for payment. "Paid" means the funds have been released to your bank or debit card. Once it shows "paid," it typically takes 1-2 business days for the money to actually appear in your account, depending on your bank's processing times. Since your adjudication was just resolved Thursday, and it's showing as "processed" now, you'll likely see it change to "paid" on Monday, with funds arriving Tuesday or Wednesday.
