Will NY unemployment send refunds as paper checks or direct deposit?

Just got notified that I'm getting an unemployment refund for some overpaid taxes from 2022. The notification didn't say how I'll receive the money. Does anyone know if New York is sending these refunds as paper checks or using the direct deposit info they already have on file? I've moved twice since filing unemployment so I'm worried about a check getting lost in the mail. My bank account is still the same though. Has anyone received their refund yet and how did it come?

Dylan Cooper

I got mine last week and it came as a direct deposit, same account they used for my regular unemployment payments. It showed up as "NYS UI REFUND" in my transaction history.

Thanks for the info! How long did it take between the notification and when you actually got the deposit?

About 10 business days from email to money in account. Not too bad considering how slow they usually are with everything else lol

Did your notification come by email or regular mail? I'm still waiting for mine and haven't gotten anything 😀

Email first, then got a letter in the mail about a week later with the same info

After struggling with this EXACT issue, I found a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me connected with a real person at unemployment who explained everything. Best money I've ever spent to finally get my benefits paid quickly. They have this system where they wait on hold for you then call when an agent picks up! Check out this video of how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

wait hold up - does this actually work or is it just the usual BS? the ny unemployment phone system is literally the 9th circle of hell

It worked for me! I was skeptical too but I was desperate after trying to call for 3 weeks straight. Got connected to an agent within 2 hours who fixed my issue right away.

another day, another company promising to fix the unfixable unemployment system lol... but if it actually worked for you maybe I'll check it out

Totally get the skepticism. NY unemployment phone lines are a nightmare. But this service actually did what it promised. The agent I talked to even told me they're seeing more people using these types of services because the phone lines are so backed up.

hmm I've been burned by so many of these 'services' before... what makes this different? genuinely curious cuz I'm desperate at this point 😩

The difference is they don't claim to do anything except get you past the hold time. They literally just call repeatedly, wait on hold, then call you when a human answers. That's it. Simple but effective!

I think it depends on how you got your original payments. I got my regular benefits via direct deposit, but this refund came as a paper check for some reason. Check your mail carefully - the envelope looks like junk mail and I almost threw it away! πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ

My friend received hers as a paper check even though she had direct deposit set up. I'm still waiting on mine (been about 3 weeks since notification). The system is so inconsistent. Some people get DD, others get checks. Classic NYSDOL chaos. πŸ™„

Yep same here. My roommate got direct deposit but mine came as a check. Makes zero sense.

did the check come in a regular envelope or was it obvious it was from unemployment?

My friend said it was in a plain white envelope with just the NY state logo in the corner. Easy to miss if you're not looking for it!

If you're worried about a check getting lost, you should update your address ASAP on the NY unemployment portal. Even if you set up direct deposit, they sometimes default to paper checks for refunds and adjustments for some stupid reason. The system is beyond broken.

I tried updating my address but the system gives me an error every time. Typical πŸ™„

Ugh that happened to me too. You'll probably need to call them to update it manually. Good luck getting through tho...

Here's the DEFINITIVE ANSWER on NY unemployment refunds (I work with a tax preparation service): If you received your original benefits via direct deposit AND your bank account hasn't changed, you'll get the refund as direct deposit. If either: - You originally got paper checks - Your bank account has changed - Your refund is over $2,500 - There's ANY flag on your account Then you'll get a paper check. The most reliable way to get accurate info is to speak directly with an agent. I had clients waiting for hours trying to get through on the phones with no luck. I recommend using claimyr.com to skip the hold times and get a callback when an agent is ready. Saved me and my clients tons of time dealing with these refund issues. Also, keep in mind these refunds are taxable on your STATE return for 2023 (not federal though). So keep documentation for next tax season!

This is incredibly helpful, thank you! If my refund is under $2,500 and my bank account is the same, sounds like I should get direct deposit then.

Wait these refunds are taxable AGAIN? The money gets taxed coming and going smh

Only taxable on your state return, not federal. And only the refunded portion. It's because the state considers it income in the year you receive it, not the year you earned it. Annoying but that's how it works.

does claimyr.com actually work? seems too good to be true for dealing with NY unemployment...

I was skeptical at first too, but it's saved my sanity with dozens of clients. They just handle the hold time then connect you to an agent. Nothing magical, just efficient.

PSA: If they send you a paper check, be prepared to wait FORπŸ‘EVERπŸ‘ My notification came in February and didn't get the check until late April. The NY unemployment system is a complete joke.

I was in the same situation. Used claimyr.com to finally talk to someone and turns out there was a hold on my account that needed to be removed manually. Had my money 3 days later!

what's claimyr? another gov service?

0 coins

-

Nah, it's a service that calls unemployment for you and stays on hold, then calls your phone when they get a real person. Saves hours of hold time. Was the only way I could get answers.

Y'all are getting refunds?! πŸ˜‚

RIGHT?? I haven't heard anything about this. What are these refunds even for?

It's for people who paid unemployment taxes in 2020-2022 and were eligible for certain exclusions. Not everyone gets one.

Call them!!!! Seriously, don't wait around wondering. I was in this exact situation and when I finally got through to someone, turns out they had the wrong address AND wrong bank info. Would have never received it if I hadn't called.

I've been trying to call but can never get through. Always says 'high call volume' then hangs up on me 😠

Try using claimyr.com - that's how I finally got through after weeks of trying. They call for you and connect when a human picks up.

This is actually a common issue right now because NY is processing a bunch of these refunds at once. My sister works for the state (not unemployment but a related department) and she said they're defaulting to whatever method you last received benefits. BUT if there's any issue with verification, they auto-switch to a check.

has anyone actually received a paper check who can confirm what the envelope looks like? i think mine might have been stolen from my mailbox 😭

Plain white envelope with NY state return address. Nothing flashy or obvious that it's a check inside. Easy to miss!

The whole NY unemployment system is designed to be confusing so people give up on getting what they're owed. Been dealing with them for years and it never gets better no matter who's in charge.

THIS!!! πŸ’― They make it intentionally difficult. I worked for a state agency (not saying which one) and this is literally part of the strategy.

bruh that's so messed up. people need this money to survive

0 coins

Yep. And the phone system is designed to handle way fewer calls than they actually get. It's not broken - it's working exactly as intended.
