Warning: NY unemployment scams increasing as benefits get harder to access

I need to warn everyone about something serious. There's been a huge spike in scammers targeting people desperate for unemployment help lately. Just this morning I got three different text messages claiming to be from "NY Benefits Verification" asking me to click links to "restore my payments" or "confirm identity." These texts look really convincing - they even had the right area code to make it seem local. Yesterday, I also got an email that looked almost exactly like it was from the unemployment office, with the right logos and everything, saying my payment was "on hold pending verification" and I needed to submit all my personal info through their sketchy portal. I almost fell for it until I noticed the email address was unemployment-nybenefits@gmail.com (obviously not official). There are also fake Facebook groups popping up where people claim to be "unemployment advocates" who can speed up your claims for a fee. My cousin paid $200 to one of these "helpers" last week and now her identity is probably stolen. With the system being so broken and impossible to reach a real person, I understand why people are desperate enough to try anything. But please, triple check everything, don't click random links, and remember the real unemployment office will never ask for your full social security number via text or email. Stay safe everyone. I'm just trying to make sure nobody else gets scammed while already dealing with the stress of unemployment.

This is SO important! I got a call yesterday from someone claiming to be a "benefits accelerator" saying they could get me my money in 24 hours if I just gave them my claim ID and last 4 of SSN. When I asked how they got my number they hung up immediately. These scumbags know ppl are desperate right now 😡

Same thing happened to my roommate! The caller even knew her name and that she'd filed for unemployment. Super creepy how they're getting this info.

0 coins

they're getting more sophisticated too. my mom got a call that showed up on caller ID as "NYS DOL" but it was fake

0 coins

That's terrifying! The system being so broken makes it even easier for these scammers to sound believable. Like when they say "we noticed your claim is delayed" - well DUH everyone's claim is delayed! 🤬

After spending weeks trying to get through to a human at unemployment, I tried this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) - they actually got me connected to a real agent without waiting for hours. Talking to an agent got my money unlocked so fast when I explained what was happening with these scammers. They told me there's been a huge rise in fraud. Worth checking out if you're having trouble getting through to report suspicious activity: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

Is this for real? I've been trying to get ahold of someone for 3 weeks straight. How does it work?

0 coins

Yeah its 100% real. Basically they do the calling and waiting on hold part for you, then connect you once a human picks up. Saved me literally days of my life on hold.

0 coins

sounds like another scam tbh... how do we know this isnt just another way to get our info? 🤔

0 coins

I get the skepticism with everything OP just posted. The difference is they don't ask for any personal details at all - they just call the official number and connect you when someone answers. You talk directly to the actual unemployment office, not to them.

0 coins

I used this too back in February when my account got locked. All they do is handle the phone wait, you still talk directly to a legit NY unemployment agent. Worth every penny to not be on hold for 5 hours.

I work in cybersecurity and want to add some tips on how to spot these scams: 1) Official unemployment communications NEVER come from gmail, yahoo, or other public email domains 2) The real unemployment office already has your SSN - they won't ask for the full number again 3) Government agencies don't use payment apps like Venmo, CashApp, Bitcoin or gift cards EVER 4) Be wary of poor grammar or spelling mistakes in official-looking communications 5) The real NYSDOL site is unemployment.labor.ny.gov - anything else is suspect If you think you've been scammed, contact NYSDOL directly, change your passwords, and consider putting a fraud alert on your credit report with all three bureaus.

yupp i got a text with a link to "verify my benefits" yesterday. message looked official and everything. I called the actual unemployment number from their website (not the one in the text) and they confirmed it was a scam. Stay vigilant yall

0 coins

Good move calling the official number! That's exactly what everyone should do instead of clicking random links

0 coins

thx! learned the hard way after my dad got his identity stolen last year from a similar scam 😬

0 coins

These scammers make me SICK. We're already struggling to survive and they prey on desperate people??? I got a text saying my "benefits were suspended due to suspicious activity" and I needed to verify my identity. Almost had a heart attack before realizing it was fake.

0 coins

its so messed up. I swear these scammers should get double the jail time when theyre targeting unemployed people.

0 coins

Literally scum of the earth. Imagine being such a lowlife that you target people who just lost their jobs 🤮

0 coins

The worst part is how HARD it is to actually reach the real unemployment office to report these scams! I spent 6 days calling repeatedly trying to talk to someone. The irony is the harder it is to reach the real people, the more desperate folks get and the more likely they are to fall for scams.

0 coins

Literally a catch-22. System so broken that people are desperate enough to try anything that promises to help.

0 coins

try claimyr.com - saved me so much time getting through when I needed to report suspicious activity on my account

0 coins

thanks for the tip! just checked it out. anything is better than hitting redial 200 times a day 😩

0 coins

BTW there's also these fake "unemployment helpers" on facebook charging people $50-100 to "expedite claims" - total scam. My sister paid one and they just disappeared with her money.

0 coins

Yep, my cousin fell for this too. These people are preying on desperation. Sorry about your sister 😞

I've noticed a lot of these scams target older people who aren't as tech savvy. My dad almost fell for one where they called claiming to be from "unemployment security" and said his benefits were going to be cancelled unless he verified his banking info. Luckily he called me first to ask if it was legit.

0 coins

My mom too! She almost gave her SSN to some random caller. We need to make sure we warn our older relatives especially.

0 coins

Good for your dad for double checking! My aunt wasn't so lucky and ended up with her bank account drained 😭

0 coins

That's terrible! Did she get her money back? These scammers are getting so sophisticated with their tactics.

0 coins

Bank refunded about half but said she was "negligent" for giving info so they wouldn't cover the rest. She's still fighting it.

When in doubt about ANY communication - don't click links, don't call phone numbers provided in the message. Always go directly to the official unemployment website by typing the address yourself (unemployment.labor.ny.gov) or call the number listed ON THAT SITE. This is basic internet safety but I think everyone needs the reminder right now.

0 coins

I wish the real ny unemployment office would do more to warn people about these scams! They should send official emails and texts warning what to look out for. The lack of communication from them makes it even harder to know what's real and what's fake.

0 coins

FOR REAL! They could easily put big warning banners on the website and when you call in. But that would require them to actually care about us 🙄

0 coins

They actually do have warnings on their website but it's buried like 3 pages deep where nobody sees it

0 coins

I've been dealing with this nightmare of trying to access my NY unemployment benefits for MONTHS. The system is such a disaster that it LITERALLY makes people more vulnerable to scams. I finally broke down and used claimyr.com to get a real person on the phone and they confirmed my account had been flagged because someone else tried to claim benefits using my info! I would have never known if I hadn't finally gotten through.

0 coins

how much does that service cost? i've been trying to get through for weeks

0 coins

Whatever it costs, it's worth it. I spent literally 30+ hours trying to call before using it. Your time has value too!

0 coins

Same here - had someone try to file using my info. Took FOREVER to get it straightened out. The unemployment system is basically training us to be desperate enough to fall for scams 🤦‍♀️

0 coins

i know this sounds obvious but dont share screenshots of your unemployment portal/claims on social media even with personal info blurred out! scammers can use those screenshots to make very convincing fake sites.

0 coins

THIS!!! 👆 I never thought about this but it makes so much sense

0 coins

FWIW I reported a scam text to the FTC at reportfraud.ftc.gov but who knows if anything will come of it. At least I felt like I was doing something I guess...

0 coins

0 coins

good idea! just submitted there too. Probably still a black hole but worth trying

0 coins

Anyone else notice these scams seem to ramp up around the same time benefits are being reviewed? I swear the week before my quarterly review I got like 5 different phishing attempts.

0 coins

OMG yes!! I thought I was the only one. They definitely have some way of knowing when claims are up for review.

0 coins

They probably have insiders at the unemployment office selling info. No way it's a coincidence.

0 coins

might not be insiders - could just be that they know the general schedule of when reviews happen and blast everyone

0 coins

If you've been scammed, immediately: 1. Contact your bank to stop/reverse any payments 2. Change ALL your passwords (email, bank, unemployment portal) 3. Place a fraud alert with credit bureaus 4. Report to FTC at reportfraud.ftc.gov 5. Report to NY Attorney General 6. Contact unemployment office (use claimyr.com if you can't get through) 7. File a police report (helps with identity theft) Don't be embarrassed - these scammers are professionals and even smart people fall for them. The important thing is to act fast.

0 coins

this is super helpful, thank you! saving this comment for future reference

0 coins

I'd add freezing your credit too - it's free and prevents new accounts being opened

0 coins

ok but for real tho how do we tell what's legit anymore?? the actual unemployment system is so glitchy and weird sometimes I can't even tell what's a scam vs what's just the system being broken 🤔

0 coins

MOOD. Got an official looking email asking me to "verify identity" and turns out it WAS actually from them but looked exactly like the scam emails everyone warned about 🤡

0 coins

when in doubt, go directly to unemployment.labor.ny.gov and check your messages there. anything legit will be in your account portal.

0 coins

Just wanna add - if anyone gets scammed, don't beat yourself up about it. These criminals are getting VERY sophisticated and they know exactly how to exploit the confusion around unemployment. My mom works in banking and says even she's impressed (and horrified) by how convincing some of these scams are now.

0 coins

Anyone else notice that scammers seem to be targeting people on specific days? I always get these fake texts on Mondays right after I certify my weekly benefits. Makes me think there's some kind of data breach happening.

0 coins

same!! i get them on mondays too right after certifying. that cant be a coincidence

0 coins

I get them on Thursdays which is when my payment usually hits my account 😳
