Suddenly denied ny unemployment after months of payments - account status changed without warning
I've been receiving unemployment benefits since April after getting laid off from my marketing job. Everything was going fine - I was filing my weekly claims, getting my money deposited, no issues whatsoever. Then last Wednesday, I logged in to certify like usual and noticed my account status had randomly changed to 'denied'. No warning, no email, nothing. I immediately tried calling but couldn't get through to anyone. When I check my payment history, it shows all my previous payments (about $2450 total over the past 3 months) but now says I'm ineligible for benefits going forward. I've triple-checked all my paperwork and haven't done anything different with my weekly certifications. Has anyone else had their status suddenly change after already getting payments? I'm completely freaking out because rent is due next week and I was counting on that money.

The exact same thing happened to me 2 weeks ago! Was getting payments fine for like 10 weeks then suddenly denied with no explanation. Tried calling for 5 days straight with no luck. Finally used that Claimyr service (claimyr.com) and got a callback with a real person who fixed it. Turns out there was a "system flag" on my account for "employment verification" that no one told me about. Got it all sorted in one phone call and my payments were back to normal by the next week. Sometimes their system just glitches or flags accounts randomly. Definitely worth getting on the phone with them ASAP! https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

•what's this claimyr thing? never heard of it... is it actually worth it?

•It's basically a service that calls unemployment for you and stays on hold, then calls you when they get a real person. Saved me like 4 hours of hold time, and talking to an agent got my $ unlocked so fast. Total lifesaver when the phone lines are impossible.

•yeah right, another 'miracle solution'... what's the catch? 🙄

•No catch - it just does what it says. You pay for them to wait on hold instead of you. I was skeptical too but after 5 days of failed calling I was desperate. Got my $1700 backpay a week after using it so definitely worth it for me.

•Woah this exists?? Where was this when I spent 3 whole days trying to get through last month 😭

This happened to my brother back in February. In his case, his former employer contested the claim after initially not responding. Did you get any mail from NYSDOL? Check your spam email too - sometimes they send notices that way and they get filtered.

•I checked all my emails including spam and there's nothing from them. No physical mail either. That's what's so frustrating - no communication at all!

•Ugh that's the worst. My brother ended up having to fax (yes, FAX in 2023!) some additional documents to them. The whole system is a mess.

Anyone who's dealt with ny unemployment knows that random status changes are like their signature move 🤡 I had the EXACT same thing happen but it was because I accidentally answered one of the weekly questions wrong. Check if you said anything different in your last certification - even minor inconsistencies can trigger automatic denials.

It might be because your benefit year expired. Even if you haven't used all your benefits, they make you reapply after your initial year. The system should've notified you but we all know how well that works lol. Check when your original claim was filed.

•I only started in April though, so it's just been 3 months. Definitely not a full year thing.

•hmm that's weird then. could be identity verification? they've been cracking down on fraud lately and sometimes legit accounts get caught in the crossfire.

I'm going through this exact nightmare right now. Had been getting payments since January, then suddenly "denied" starting in July. I've tried everything - emailed, called a million times, contacted my state rep. After THREE WEEKS of trying, I finally got through yesterday and they said it was a "quarterly review" flag that got stuck in the system. They're reprocessing my claim now. Keep trying to reach them - that's the only way to fix it.

•How did you finally get through? I've been trying for days and it's always busy or they hang up.

•I used claimyr.com after wasting so much time. It was the only way I could actually talk to a live agent after all my failed attempts. Best decision I made because the agent could actually see all the notes on my account that I couldn't access online.

Look, I hate to say this, but NYSDOL is THE WORST at communication. There are like a dozen reasons this could be happening, but you won't know until you talk to someone. Common reasons for sudden claim denials: - They need additional wage verification - Your previous employer disputed something - Quarterly review triggered a flag - System error (happens WAY more than they admit) - You have unreported income they detected - They're doing random audits (yes, really) - Your identity verification expired The good news is that if you were legitimately eligible before, you probably still are. The bad news is that fixing it will be a nightmare. Your fastest option is getting on the phone with them. I wasted 2 weeks trying myself before using claimyr.com which got me connected in a day. Whatever you do, don't wait - these issues take time to resolve and they won't automatically backdate payments in many cases.

•This is so accurate. I'm pretty sure NYSDOL's motto is "deny first, ask questions never" 💀

•wait do they actually do random audits? that's terrifying

•Yep! Friend of mine got randomly selected for an "enhanced verification process" despite having a completely normal claim. Took her 3 weeks to sort out.

•The quarterly review thing is so real! Happens at the end of every calendar quarter (Mar, Jun, Sep, Dec). They check if you had any unreported wages during previous quarters.

did u move recently? I had a similar problem and it turned out they were trying to mail me something but had wrong address. check ur address on file in the system.

Check if you have access to your payment history still. If its still there, that means its probably a system glitch. If it disappeared completely, it might be something more serious like suspected fraud. Either way you NEED to reach a human on the phone.

•Yeah, I can still see all my payment history. That's a good sign at least, right?

•Def a good sign. Probably just a system flag of some kind that a rep can clear up. Keep all your docs handy when you call tho.

The same thing happened to me in May!!! My account said I was denied benefits after getting paid for 6 weeks without issues. I panicked and couldn't get through on the phone lines. Sent emails that never got answered. After 3 weeks of stress, I finally discovered the issue - I had a part-time gig I reported but their system miscalculated my earnings and thought I was working full-time. Total system error but it took talking to THREE different agents to fix it. Now I'm paranoid and screenshot everything.

•wait hold up - does this actually work or is it just the usual BS?

•It actually works! They call and wait on hold, then call you when they get a human. Talking to someone was the ONLY way I got my issue fixed. The website didn't help at all.

NY unemployment doing NY unemployment things 🙄 They randomly decided I was committing fraud last year after 4 months of normal payments. Turns out someone with a similar name had a fraud case and they flagged me by mistake. Took 6 weeks and a call to my state senator to fix it. The system is completely broken.

There was a system update last Monday - tons of people had weird issues after that. Some claims got accidentally flagged as fraudulent, others had payment method changes, and some got straight-up denied. My sister works for the state (not unemployment) and said they're aware of the glitches but haven't announced it publicly. Keep certifying each week even if it says you're denied, so when they fix it you'll get backpay.

•Ohhhh that explains why my payment was delayed last week! I got it eventually but it was 2 days late.

If u cant reach them by phone try twitter! I DM'd @NYSLabor with my issue (not my claim # or SSN obvs) and they actually responded and had someone call me back. Took a few days but worked when nothing else did.

Happened to me too but for a different reason - I hit my "maximum benefit amount" even though I thought I had more weeks left. Check if you've reached your maximum benefit? Should show in your payment history.

ApolloJackson
•I checked that first actually - I've only received about $2450 total and my maximum benefit amount says $13,104 so definitely not that. Good suggestion though!

sometimes their system does this when they need more documentation from you. log into your account and check the "messages" section to see if there's anything in there. also check if there are any outstanding questionnaires or forms they need you to fill out.

This literally happened to me two days ago!!! I've been getting payments for 5 months, then suddenly denied. I called non-stop for 2 days then got through this morning. They said it was a "verification issue" and fixed it on the spot. My advice - KEEP CALLING until you get a human. Don't rely on the website to fix itself.

•Honestly it was horrible - I called 23 times before even getting in the hold queue, then waited 2.5 hours. Total nightmare!

•So I was about to throw my phone after 3 hours on hold when I found claimyr.com - they waited on hold for me and just called when they got a rep. talking to an agent got my $ unlocked so fast, totally worth it
