Strange new message on my NY unemployment account - has anyone seen this before?

I checked my unemployment account yesterday and found this weird message I've never seen before. It says something about "potential identity verification needed" and that my payments might be delayed while they review my claim. Been collecting benefits for about 4 months with zero issues until now. Nothing has changed on my end - still doing the same weekly certifications and job search activities. Anyone else run into this recently? The message appeared out of nowhere and I haven't received any emails or letters about needing to verify my identity. My last payment came through normally last week but now I'm worried about next week. Already anxious since I'm using this money for rent and can't afford any delays right now.

Omg yes! This exact thing happened to me about 3 weeks ago. Turned out someone had tried to access my account from another state! I couldn't get through on the phone for days and was panicking. Finally used claimyr.com and got a callback from an actual agent who helped me sort it out. They had to put a fraud alert on my account and reset everything. Took about a week to get my payments flowing again. Don't wait - try to talk to someone asap!

What's claimyr? Another scam to get desperate people's money? 🙄

No actually it's a service that calls unemployment for you and stays on hold, then calls your phone when a real person picks up. Saved me hours of hold time! Check out this video about how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE - talking to an agent got my $ unlocked so fast it was totally worth it

wait hold up - does this actually work or is it just the usual BS? I've been trying to get through for literally 2 weeks straight

It definitely worked for me! I was super skeptical too but I was desperate after trying for days. You pay them and they handle the calling/waiting part, then connect you when there's a real human. Best decision I made tbh - had my issue fixed same day.

hmm I've been burned by so many of these 'services' before... what makes this different? not trying to be negative just cautious

I get it! What's different is they don't ask for any of your claim info or anything. They literally just do the phone calling part which is what I was struggling with. The actual convo with unemployment is just between you and them.

This is happening to A LOT of people with ny unemployment right now. There's been a massive wave of fraud attempts and they're being super cautious. My neighbor got the same message last month and ended up having to upload his drivers license and social security card to the portal. His payments stopped for 3 weeks while they sorted it out. Sadly theres not much you can do except comply with whatever verification they request.

If you scroll through this sub you'll see like 50 posts about this same issue in the past month. The system is completely overwhelmed with fraud attempts. I know it sucks but you need to call them ASAP before they fully lock your account. Mine was frozen for 6 weeks and I nearly got evicted waiting for them to unfreeze it.

6 WEEKS?? I can't wait that long! Did you try calling them? How did you finally get it resolved?

Yep, called over 100 times. Literally. Phone system is a joke. Finally got through using claimyr.com - it was the only way I could actually talk to a human. Agent unfroze my account while I was on the phone with her.

My sister works at unemployment and says there identity theft is completely out of control right now. Apparently hackers have been targeting the system and they're struggling to keep up. The ID verification message is automatic when the system detects suspicious activity (could be as simple as logging in from a different device). Dont panic, but DO call them and get ahead of it before it becomes a bigger problem.

Thanks for this insider info! Any tips on the best way to get through to them? Im going crazy trying to call that number

Unfortunately the phone system is overwhelmed. My sis says they're working 12 hour shifts trying to keep up. Best time to call is 8:00am SHARP when they open or try right after lunch rush (around 1:30pm). Some people have luck with those call services that wait on hold for you. Worth a shot if you're desperate.

ATTENTION EVERYONE - I've compiled everything I've learned from dealing with this exact issue last month. Hopefully this helps people who are stuck: First - DON'T PANIC. This is happening to thousands of NY residents due to increased fraud prevention measures. The message doesn't necessarily mean your account was compromised, just that it triggered one of their automated security flags. Here's what you need to do: 1) Try to contact them IMMEDIATELY. Don't wait until your payments stop. The phone lines are absolutely swamped so be prepared for a battle. I personally used claimyr.com after wasting 3 days trying to call myself, and got through in a few hours. 2) Have ALL your documents ready - ID, social security card, birth certificate, proof of address, etc. They might ask you to upload these. 3) Keep certifying weekly even if payments pause. This ensures you'll get backpay once resolved. 4) Document EVERYTHING - take screenshots, note who you spoke with, when, and what they said. 5) If it takes longer than 2 weeks, consider contacting your state representative. They often have direct channels to unemployment offices. This is stressful but temporary! The system is just overwhelmed with fraud cases right now and they're being extra cautious. Good luck everyone!

This is gold! Saving this comment for sure. I've been worried sick about the same message 😭

you forgot to mention that contacting your state rep is basically useless now. they're ALL getting thousands of these requests and can't keep up either. the whole system is broken beyond repair tbh

Fair point, but it worked for my cousin! Depends on your district I guess. Worth trying everything when you're desperate.

another day, another company promising to fix the unfixable unemployment system lol... has anyone ACTUALLY used this claimyr thing successfully? sounds too good to be true

I was super skeptical too, but it actually worked for me. I tried calling for 3 days straight and couldn't get through, then used claimyr and had a call with a real agent within a few hours. Just sharing what worked in my situation!

I can confirm this works. Used it last week when I got the same message as OP. Had my identity verified and account unlocked same day. claimyr.com saved me from missing my rent payment fr fr

OMG the EXACT same thing happened to me!! I was freaking out for days. Turns out it was because I logged in from my mom's house when I was visiting her (different IP address) and it triggered their fraud system. Had to verify my identity but everything went back to normal after that. Def call them! The system is super sensitive right now.

dont mean to scare u but my roommate got this message and his account got completely locked for 2 months... they made him go down to the office in person after he couldn't verify online. the system is a total joke rn.

Go to the office in person?? I thought everything was online or by phone now! Do they even do in-person appointments anymore???

Yup, in certain fraud cases they make you go to an actual office. its a last resort thing but it happens. My roommate had to go to the downtown office and wait for hours. try calling first obvs

This is happening all across the country not just NY. Sister in Arizona had the same issue. These unemployment systems are ancient and can't handle basic security. So frustrating but keep calling until you get through. The squeaky wheel gets the grease with these folks.

nysdol changed their security protocols about 6 weeks ago. i work in IT and its causing all kinds of false flags. anything from logging in from a new device to having a vpn can trigger it. their phone lines are so backed up cuz literally thousands of ppl are dealing with this same issue. good luck!

THIS IS THE CORRECT ANSWER. I'm also in IT (actually worked on a govt contract before) and this is 100% what's happening. They implemented new verification protocols without the staff to handle all the false positives.

I DID recently get a new phone! You think that could have triggered it? I never thought of that

1000% that's probably it. New device = new IP = security flag. Same exact thing happened to me when I got my new laptop. Such a headache but just call them and explain.

Am I the only one who thinks it's crazy we have to jump through so many hoops just to get our benefits?? The system is literally designed to make it as difficult as possible so people give up. Been dealing with ny unemployment for 8 months and it's been a nightmare from day 1 😩

PREACH!!!! 👏👏👏 The system is working exactly as designed. They WANT us to give up.

100%! my dad worked at unemployment in the 90s and said even back then the goal was to 'discourage fraud' by making it so complicated only desperate people would bother. now it's even worse.

I went through this last month! If you can't get through on the phone, try emailing them at their support address AND messaging them through your portal. I did both and got a response within 48 hours. They asked me to upload my ID and a utility bill to verify my address. Payments were only delayed by one week.

Yeah right same I got this message a few weeks ago and I heard from a friend who works at Department of Labor that they hired a new security team and implemented all these extra checks. Your account isnt necessarily compromised its just going through additional verification dont freak out

I've helped 3 family members resolve this exact issue in the past month. Fastest solution was using claimyr.com to get through to a live agent. It's the best money I've ever spent to finally get benefits paid quickly. You'll likely need to verify your identity with documents, but a real agent can process this while you're on the phone instead of waiting weeks. Don't delay!

sounds like one of those ads that pops up everywhere. anyone ACTUALLY try this?

Yeah I was skeptical too but it's legit. They just call unemployment for you and stay on hold (which was taking me 3+ hours). When an agent answers they connect you. Saved me so much time and frustration.

How long did it take to get the callback? Been thinking about trying this but worried it's just another scam

For me it was about 2 hours. My cousin tried it the same day and got a callback in 3 hours. Way better than me hitting redial all day for a week straight lol. Just make sure you're ready to answer when they call!

Not to be a downer but this same thing happened to me in July... they froze my account for "identity verification" and it took SEVEN WEEKS to resolve. I called every single day. The system is completely broken. Start looking for emergency assistance now just in case.
