Stuck in NY unemployment limbo over green card verification - 3 months and counting
Been waiting since February 7th this year with the same message showing up on my portal: "we are currently reviewing your claim" and my countdown is stuck at zero. I've called multiple times to figure out what's going on. First they said it was an issue with my employer, which eventually got resolved. Now they're telling me there's a problem with my work authorization permit since I'm a green card holder. Supposedly they contacted Homeland Security who apparently approved my documents, but now I'm waiting for some kind of "review of the review" and they keep mentioning backlogs in that department. I'm seriously losing my patience after almost 3 months of this runaround. Has anyone else dealt with this kind of verification nightmare as a permanent resident?

Yes! Same boat but different document. I'm on a work visa and they've been "verifying" my status for 4 months now. Called 16 times and get a different answer every time. One rep told me it could take up to 6 months for Homeland Security verifications. The system is completely broken.

•6 MONTHS?? That's insane... did they at least give you any kind of case number or anything to follow up with?

•Nope! Just the generic claim ID that shows nothing useful when I check online. They said "the system will update when it updates" 🤬

•This is why I tell everyone not to leave the country while on unemployment. They flag your account so fast and then it's verification hell.

After wasting weeks trying to reach someone at ny unemployment, I finally found a service that got me connected to a real person! Used claimyr.com and they kept redialing until they got through, then connected me directly to an agent. Talking to a real person finally broke my claim free after it was stuck for 5 weeks. Worth checking out this video that shows how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

•Does this actually work? Sounds too good to be true after all the hours I've spent on hold...

•Yeah it worked for me! They basically do the holding for you and then call you when they get a person. Honestly it was the best money I spent to get my benefits moving again.

•wait hold up - does this actually work or is it just the usual BS? i've wasted so much time on "solutions" that ended up being useless

•It's not a magical fix for your claim issues, but it does get you through to an actual person so you can address whatever's holding up your claim. Saved me days of constant redialing.

I had the EXACT same issue last year! Also GC holder. The trick that finally worked was asking to speak to a supervisor who had the authority to override the additional review. Took me 9 calls but the 9th one finally connected me to someone who could help. The regular agents can't do anything for these immigration verification cases.

omg the immigration verification stuff is a nightmare rn. My cousin (Canadian with work permit) has been waiting almost 90 days for his claim to clear. He sent them copies of EVERYTHING and they still say they're "verifying". I think the whole system is just overwhelmed.

•Are they at least getting backpay once its finally approved? This wait time is criminal 😤

•Yeah they should get backpay from when they initially filed, but bills don't wait 3+ months to be paid so its still a disaster for ppl

The NY unemployment system has a serious blind spot when it comes to people with green cards and work visas. I've been through this exact situation twice now. Here's what actually works: First, you need to speak to an actual claims specialist, not just the frontline reps who answer the phones. Regular agents can only see that your claim is "pending review" but can't override anything. Second, you need to ask specifically for someone in the "specialized documentation" department. Regular supervisors often don't have authorization for immigration document reviews. Third, document EVERYTHING. Get the name and ID number of every person you speak with. Take notes of dates, times, and what was said. Fourth, be persistent but polite. Some agents will tell you there's nothing they can do and to just wait. That's not true. There's always an escalation path. Fifth, if you're still stuck, try reaching them through claimyr.com - it's the only reliable way I've found to get through the phone maze without spending your entire day on hold. Sixth, as a last resort, contact your state assembly person's office. They have special channels to unemployment office leadership and can often break the logjam. Hope this helps! The system is seriously broken, but there are ways through it if you're persistent.

•Thank you for this detailed breakdown! I'll definitely try asking specifically for the specialized documentation department. Did you have to use any specific phrasing to get transferred there?

•Just be direct - "I need to speak with the specialized documentation team that handles green card verifications." If they say it doesn't exist, ask to speak to a supervisor. Some reps will try to brush you off.

•This is solid advice. I work adjacent to this system (not for NYSDOL) and can confirm the specialized documentation team is real but not every rep knows how to transfer to them.

Dealing with this right now too. Green card holder, been waiting since December. I finally got through to someone last week who said they needed additional verification from USCIS and that can take "up to 5 months" due to backlogs. The whole system is a joke.

It's not just green cards, they're doing this with citizens too if you have any name discrepancies or if you've ever lived abroad. My account got flagged for "identity verification" because my middle name was different on some documents. Took 11 weeks to clear.

•Seriously?? That's insane. What documents did you end up having to provide?

•Birth certificate, SS card, drivers license, and weirdly they wanted a utility bill too. Then they still took forever to clear it even with all that.

I know this sounds dum but have u tried sending a message through the portal? Sometimes they actually respond to those and it can trigger movement on ur claim. Not guaranteed but worth a shot.

I've been stuck in identity verification hell for 77 days. Called over 30 times. Finally got through using claimyr.com last week and spoke to a supervisor who was actually helpful. She confirmed my docs were approved but the system hadn't updated. She manually pushed my claim through and I got paid 2 days later. Don't give up!

•Woah, 77 days is brutal! Did they backpay you for all of it?

Tobias Lancaster
•Yep, got the whole backpay. But still, that's 2.5 months of stress that wasn't necessary. The supervisor literally fixed it in 5 minutes once I got connected.

•I'm definitely going to check out that claimyr site. At this point I'll try anything to get a human on the phone who can actually help.

For anyone else stuck in ths situation - START CALLING UR STATE REPRESENTATIVE NOW. Don't wait. They have special contacts at unemployment who can flag ur case. Its how I finally got mine resolved after 9 weeks of waiting on my work permit verification.

Having a green card shouldnt even require extra verification WTF. I thought that was the whole point of a green card - proving you're authorized to work. NY unemployment system is completely broken.

•Exactly! A green card is literally called a Permanent Resident Card. The clue is in the name!

•It's because they're checking if it's still valid and not expired or revoked. But yeah, the verification shouldn't take MONTHS.

This happened to my wife (also GC holder). After 3 months of waiting, we found out that they had misspelled her A-number when sending the verification to USCIS. Double-check that all your info was entered correctly.

Jungleboo Soletrain
•OMG I never even thought to check that! How do I verify what A-number they have on file? Can I see that in the portal?
0 coins
Sunny Wang
•You can't see it in the portal unfortunately. You have to call and ask them to verify the A-number they have on file for you. Might take a few calls to get someone helpful enough to check.

the problem is they're using some ancient verification system that has no communication with USCIS's actual database. I work in software and the whole system is a disaster. They basically send manual requests that sit in a queue for months.

Try emailing ImmigrationVerification@labor.ny.gov - I found this email after digging through some old forum posts. Sent them my info and got movement on my claim within a week. Worth a shot.

•Is this email legit? I don't want to send any personal info to the wrong place

•It's a .gov email so should be safe. Just don't include your full SSN - use just the last 4 digits and your claim ID.

•Thank you! I'll definitely try this. At this point I'll try anything to get this resolved.
