Need help resetting NY unemployment account after forgetting login info
So frustrating! I haven't logged into my NY unemployment account since last August when I was collecting benefits. Now I need to access my 1099-G for taxes, but I completely forgot my username AND password. When I try the 'forgot password' option, it asks for my username which I don't remember. Then I tried the 'forgot username' option but it asks for the email I used to register, and I've gone through all three of my emails with no luck finding any confirmation emails from back then. I've been trying to call the unemployment office for 2 days straight but keep getting disconnected or put on eternal hold. Has anyone successfully reset their account info when they've forgotten everything? Is there a special number I should be calling for account issues rather than the main line? This tax deadline is getting closer and I'm getting desperate!

Try calling (888) 209-8124. That's their main number for tech support issues. it'll take FOREVER to get through though. I was on hold for almost 3 hours when I needed to recover my account last month. Have your SSN, DOB, and address ready - that's how they verified my identity when I finally got a human.

β’Thx for the number! I tried it this morning and you weren't kidding about the wait times. Got disconnected after 45 min π€¬

β’You gotta call right when they open at 8am. That's how I finally got through. And yeah have a charger nearby lol

I had the EXACT same problem last month. The regular phone lines are a complete nightmare. I finally found an app called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me connected to an actual human at NY unemployment. They call on your behalf, stay on hold, then connect you when they get a live person. Saved me literally days of frustration and I had my account reset plus my 1099-G in my inbox within 24 hours after speaking to someone. Check out this video too: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE - talking to an agent got my tax docs so much faster than I expected!

β’Is this actually real? Sounds too good to be true tbh. The DOL phone system is basically designed to make you give up...

β’100% worked for me. I was also super skeptical but was desperate after trying for 2 weeks on my own. They just call for you and keep your place in line, then your phone rings when there's an agent. Nothing fancy but saved me so much time

β’how long did it take to get connected? their website says average wait times are like 2-3 hours but that's still better than trying for days

β’For me it was about 2.5 hours from when I ordered the call to when my phone rang with a rep on the line. But I was able to just go about my day instead of being stuck listening to that awful hold music π

β’This sounds promising, might have to try this. Did they send your 1099 right away after resetting everything?

β’Yep! Once I got through to someone, they verified my identity, reset my account access, and then I asked about the 1099-G. They sent it to my updated email within a few hours. Super easy once you actually talk to a human!

If you wanna go the DIY route without paying, you need to call right at 8am when they open. Then press options 1, then 1 again when prompted. This sometimes gets you to the account recovery team faster. You'll still wait on hold but less chance of getting disconnected. Also, sometimes the online chat works better - look for the little chat icon on the bottom right of the main unemployment page.

β’I didnt even know they had a chat feature!! Gonna try this tomorrow, thanks!

β’The chat feature is even worse than calling imo. I waited 3 hours and then it just... disconnected me π€‘

β’hmm weird, it worked for me the first time. maybe it depends on time of day? I used it around 10am on a Tuesday

Ugh the NY unemployment system is complete garbage. I swear they make it difficult on purpose. If you're really desperate and dont mind taking a trip, you can visit one of their career centers in person. I went to the one in Brooklyn after weeks of phone hell, and they sorted me out in about an hour. Bring ID and your social security card.

Honestly, this happens because they're still using a system from like 1972 π My cousin works for NY state IT (not unemployment but another dept) and says their whole infrastructure is ancient. The account recovery system literally runs on scheduled batches overnight rather than in real-time. ANYWAY, try calling and use the Spanish option, then just ask the rep if they speak English when they answer. The Spanish line usually has shorter wait times (shhh don't tell everyone).

β’OMG the Spanish line hack WORKS! Just got through in 20 mins when I'd been trying the English line for days π±

β’Is that really fair though? Taking up spots on the Spanish line when you don't speak Spanish?

β’Most of the reps are bilingual anyway, and they're all looking at the same system. Rather than thinking of it as 'taking spots,' think of it as 'load balancing' their call center lol

β’I guess that makes sense. The whole system needs a complete overhaul anyway π€·ββοΈ

Another vote for claimyr.com here! π After banging my head against the wall for literally a week trying to get through to reset my account, I used their service and had a DOL rep on the phone within a few hours. Best part is I could just go about my day and wait for them to call me when someone was actually on the line. If you're trying to get your 1099-G, time is money, and this service saved me so much time!

β’How much did it cost though?

β’Whatever it was, it was worth not having to sit on hold for days. I calculated how much my time was worth and it was a no-brainer. Got my tax forms and filed on time instead of having to file an extension.

For the love of all that is holy...DO NOT GO THROUGH THE AUTOMATED SYSTEM!!! Call (888) 209-8124, then as soon as it starts speaking, press: 9-1-1-1-1-1-1 quickly. This gets you out of the automated menu hell and puts you in line for a human. I discovered this trick after months of suffering. Still waited 90 minutes but at least got through. You're welcome. π

This isn't helping with your immediate problem, but once you do get this resolved, PLEASE write down your login info somewhere secure and set up 2FA if they offer it. I keep all my government login info in a password manager because this exact situation is such a nightmare to fix. Hope you get your 1099 soon!

Here's what worked for me when I was in the EXACT same situation (literally could have written your post myself): 1) Make sure you have your Social Security card, photo ID, and any old mail from NYSDOL handy 2) Call (888) 209-8124 3) Choose option 2 for "claim services" (counter-intuitive, I know) 4) Then option 1 for "information about an existing claim" 5) When it asks for your PIN, purposely enter it wrong 3 times 6) This forces you into the queue for a live representative You'll still wait forever, but at least you'll eventually get to a human who can help. I finally got my account reset after trying everything else. The system is designed to frustrate you into giving up. Alternatively, I've heard great things about claimyr.com - they call and wait on hold for you, then connect you when they get a live agent. I wish I'd known about them before spending days on this.

β’This is incredibly detailed, thank you! I don't even remember my PIN either but I guess failing to enter one works just as well π

You can try requesting your 1099-G through the IRS directly if you just need it for tax purposes. Login to your IRS account (if you have one) and check the wage and income transcript section. Sometimes they already have it even if you can't access the NYSDOL site. Saved me last year when I had a similar problem.

β’That's actually why I'm in this mess... I was trying to create an IRS account to do exactly this, but they needed info from my 1099-G to verify me π€¦ββοΈ It's a perfect catch-22

β’Oof, that's rough. In that case definitely try one of the phone methods people suggested. The system is basically a circle of hell.

Anyone tried the new NYSDOL mobile app? I heard they finally launched one last year and it supposedly has better account recovery options. Haven't tried it myself since I haven't needed unemployment recently, but might be worth a shot?

β’The app is GARBAGE, somehow even worse than the website. It crashes constantly and the password reset function just sends you back to the website anyway. Save yourself the frustration.

I was in the exact same situation last month. Tried all the phone numbers, tried the online reset, nothing worked. What FINALLY worked was using Claimyr (claimyr.com). They call NY unemployment for you and wait on hold, then connect you when there's a live person. It's the only way I was able to talk to a real person at the DOL. Once I got someone on the phone, they reset everything in like 5 minutes. The time I saved was worth every penny - I was about to miss my tax filing deadline!

β’Is Claimyr actually legit? Sounds almost too good to be true with how impossible it is to reach ny unemployment...

Monique Byrd
β’Totally get the skepticism, I felt the same way! But yes it works - they basically just call and wait on hold so you don't have to. When they reach a person, your phone rings and you're connected. Simple but effective. I was able to get my account reset and my 1099-G was emailed to me the same day.

Good luck! I spent 4 days trying to get through on the phone last month. In the end I contacted my state assembly member's office and they have staff dedicated to helping with unemployment issues. They got back to me in 48 hours and had everything fixed within a week. Might be worth a try if nothing else works!

when u finally get thru make sure u ask them to update ur email AND set up ur NY.gov ID!!! thats different from ur unemployment login and makes everything easier in the future. i lost my login info 3 times before an agent showed me this trick.

β’the ny.gov ID is key! Once you have that set up, you can access all kinds of state services with one login. unemployment, tax stuff, dmv, everything

I went through this exact nightmare last year! What finally worked for me was going to my local One-Stop Career Center in person. I know it's a pain to travel, but I brought my ID, social security card, and an old paystub from when I was collecting benefits. The staff there were able to verify my identity and reset my account on the spot. They even printed out my 1099-G right there. Much faster than the phone runaround, and you're dealing with actual humans who want to help instead of that broken phone system. Look up "One-Stop Career Center" + your county name to find the closest location. Most are open Mon-Fri 9-5. Save yourself the phone hell!
