Need help resetting NY unemployment account password - IRS site confusion?
Hi everyone, I'm trying to access my ny unemployment account but I'm completely locked out. I think I mixed up my login credentials with another government site (probably the IRS site I was on earlier). Does anyone have a direct number I can call to reset my username and password for the NY unemployment site? The automated system keeps giving me the runaround and I really need to certify this week. Thanks!

The IRS and NY unemployment are totally different systems. You need to call the NY DOL tech support at 888-209-8124. Press 1 for English, then either 2 for PIN issues or 3 for password resets. Be ready to wait though, took me almost 2 hours last time!

•Thanks for the number! Do you know if there's a specific time that's better to call? I tried yesterday afternoon and couldn't even get into the queue.

Just to clarify, if you're trying to reset your NY.gov ID (which you use to access unemployment), you should go to https://my.ny.gov and click on 'Forgot Username or Password'. You'll need access to the email address you used when you set up the account. If that doesn't work, THEN call the 888-209-8124 number.

•I tried the reset link but it says my account is locked after too many attempts. I think I need to speak with someone directly.

•That's exactly what I'm worried about! I really can't afford to miss payments right now.

I had the same issue back in January. After trying for days to get through on the regular line, I finally used Claimyr (claimyr.com) and got connected to an agent in about 20 minutes. They have this service where they basically wait on hold for you then call you when an agent is available. They have a video showing how it works here: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE. It saved me so much stress when I was dealing with my account lockout.

•is that legit? sounds sketchy to give some random service your phone number

•It's definitely legit. They don't access your account or anything - they just connect the call. The DOL agent helped me reset everything once I got through.

Here's the official process for NY unemployment account recovery: 1. First try the self-service option at https://my.ny.gov 2. If your account is locked, you MUST call 888-209-8124 3. Best times to call are Tuesday-Thursday between 8:00-8:30am or after 6:30pm 4. Have your NY.gov ID, email address, and some form of ID ready 5. If you can't get through, you can also try the chat assistant on labor.ny.gov (but it has limited capabilities for security issues) Remember that the NY unemployment system is completely separate from the IRS system - they don't share login credentials.

•I tried different browsers and clearing cookies already. The account is definitely locked from too many wrong password attempts.

My sister works for the IRS and she said they get calls ALL THE TIME from people mixing up government websites. IRS has nothing to do with state unemployment! Each state has their own separate unemployment system.

•Yeah I realize that now! I was jumping between both sites doing tax stuff and unemployment certification and got confused about which login I was using where. Totally my mistake.

•That's actually a good idea, thanks! I might try that if the phone calls don't work out.

UPDATE: I got through! Called right at 8:01am and only waited about 25 minutes. The agent was super helpful and reset everything for me. Just needed to verify some info and now I'm back in my account. Thanks everyone for your help!

Glad you got it resolved! For anyone else reading this thread in the future: there's a difference between resetting your NY.gov ID (which controls access to all NY state services) and resetting your PIN (which is specific to unemployment claims). Make sure you know which one you need help with before calling.
