Trying to get my NY unemployment 1099-G tax form without login or PIN - urgent help needed!
Hey guys ππΏ I'm really stressing out about my taxes right now. I need to retrieve my 1099-G from NY unemployment but I completely forgot my NY.gov ID login AND password. When I called the helpline, they asked for some 4-digit PIN that I set up ages ago...which I also don't remember! π€¦πΏββοΈ I've tried the password recovery option but it's asking for info I don't have anymore. Tax deadline is coming up soon and I NEED this form! Has anyone been in this situation before? How do I get my 1099-G without any of this info? HELPβΌοΈβΌοΈβΌοΈπ€πΏ

Had this same problem last year. The NY unemployment system is such a headache when it comes to retrieving tax documents! There are basically 3 options: 1) Try the NY.gov ID recovery process again but use the option that verifies through email instead of the PIN, 2) Request a paper copy by mail (takes 7-10 business days), or 3) Visit a local DOL career center in person with your ID and they can print it for you on the spot.

I work with unemployment claims regularly. The fastest solution is to call NYSDOL directly and request a PIN reset. You'll need to verify your identity with your full name, last 4 of SSN, date of birth, and mailing address. Once identity is verified, they can reset your PIN, which you can then use to access your account and download your 1099-G directly. The number is 888-209-8124.

β’I tried calling that number like 20 times!!!! It either hangs up on me or puts me on hold for hours and then disconnects! Is there another number that actually works????

omg the SAME exact thing happened to me in January!!! so frustrating. i ended up having to go IN PERSON to the DOL office with my ID and they printed it right there. took like 20 mins once i was there but saved me weeks of stressing

β’The system isn't rigged, it's just poorly designed. I've had great experiences with the actual agents when you can reach them. They're usually very helpful and can solve most problems quickly - the challenge is just getting through to a human.

After dealing with this exact issue for weeks, I finally got through using Claimyr (claimyr.com). It's a service that connects you directly to a NYSDOL agent without the endless waiting. I was skeptical but they got me through to someone in under 20 minutes. The agent reset my PIN over the phone after verifying my identity, and I was able to log in and download my 1099-G immediately. You can see how it works here: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE - literally saved me hours of frustration and potential tax penalties.

β’omg this looks amazing!!! did they need a lot of personal info to use the service? and how fast did u get your 1099 after?

β’The service just needs your phone number to call you back when they have an agent on the line. After that, you talk directly to the NYSDOL agent who will ask for verification (SSN, DOB, address). I had my PIN reset during that call, logged in immediately after, and downloaded my 1099-G within minutes. The whole process from starting with Claimyr to having my form was less than an hour.

I had to file for an extension last year because of this exact problem! If you're really stuck and running out of time, remember you can file Form 4868 for a tax extension while you sort this out. Won't solve your immediate problem but might give you breathing room.

β’This is good advice if you're truly stuck, but keep in mind that an extension only gives you more time to file - not more time to pay any taxes owed. You'll still need to estimate what you owe and pay by the original deadline to avoid penalties and interest.

One more thing - if you received unemployment in 2024, your 1099-G should also be viewable in your online tax preparation software (TurboTax, H&R Block, etc.) if you authorize them to directly import your tax documents. Worth checking if you're using one of those services!

β’In TurboTax, when you get to the income section, there should be an option to "Import tax documents" or "Search for a 1099-G." Click that and authorize TurboTax to check for your documents. They might already have it on file from the NYSDOL's direct reporting system. Worth a try before going through all the other hassle!

So glad you found your 1099-G through TurboTax! π That's such a relief when you're stressed about tax deadlines. For anyone else reading this thread in the future - this is definitely worth trying first before going through all the PIN reset headaches. Most major tax software (TurboTax, H&R Block, FreeTaxUSA) can import government tax documents directly now, including unemployment 1099-Gs. It's become a real time-saver compared to the old days of manually tracking everything down!

β’This is such valuable info! I had no idea tax software could automatically pull in unemployment documents like that. Makes me wonder what other tax forms they can import automatically - probably saves tons of people from similar situations. Thanks for sharing this tip, definitely bookmarking this thread for future reference! π
