NY unemployment payment delayed even though certification went through - money not released

I certified for my NY unemployment benefits like I always do, but the money hasn't been released to my account yet. I normally receive payment by today (Tuesday) after certifying on Sunday. My benefit year date shows I'm covered until 03/2025, so I know my claim is still active. The website just shows 'pending' with no explanation. Has anyone else experienced a delay this week? Should I be worried or just wait it out? The bills aren't going to pay themselves!

Glad I'm not the only one at least. Did you call them or are you just waiting?

This happened to me last month. There are a few reasons this could be happening: 1. There might be a system-wide delay (happens every few months) 2. Your work search activities might be under review 3. They could be verifying your identity again 4. If you reported any income, they might be recalculating your benefit amount If it's a system delay, it usually resolves within 1-2 days. If it goes past Thursday, that's when you should try calling the claims center. The number you need is 1-888-209-8124, but be prepared to wait for hours.

Thank you for the detailed info! I didn't report any income, and I've been doing the same work search activities I always do. I'll give it until Thursday like you suggested. Really appreciate your help.

Is this the first time you've had a payment delay? Did you answer any questions differently when you certified? Sometimes even a tiny change can trigger a review. I'm always paranoid about making mistakes during certification because I once had my benefits frozen for THREE WEEKS because I accidentally clicked "yes" instead of "no" on one question. The anxiety was awful!!!

This is the first delay I've had in months. I'm pretty sure I certified exactly the same way I always do, but now you've got me worried I might have made a mistake without realizing it. Three weeks sounds terrible! How did you eventually get it resolved?

There's currently a processing delay affecting some claims in the NY unemployment system. I just got off the phone with a representative who confirmed they're aware of the issue and working to clear the backlog. They said most delayed payments from Sunday's certification should process by tomorrow (Wednesday). If you don't receive your payment by Thursday, then you should definitely call to check on your specific claim. There might be an additional issue that needs to be addressed.

Thank you so much for this update! It's a relief to know it's a known issue and not just my claim. I'll wait until Thursday before panicking.

How did you actually get through to someone?? I've been trying for days with no luck!

I had this same problem last week and wasted hours trying to get through on the phone. After trying for two days and never getting past the hold music, I used a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me connected to an agent in about 20 minutes. They have a video showing how it works here: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE Once I finally spoke with someone, they told me there was a flag on my account because I had worked a single day during one week and reported those earnings. The agent removed the hold right away, and my payment came through the next day. Might be worth a try if you can't get through by Thursday.

It worked for me - they just help you get past the phone queue. The representative I talked to was an actual NYSDOL employee who fixed my claim.

Thanks for the suggestion. I'll wait until Thursday first since it sounds like this might resolve on its own, but I'll keep this in mind if I need to call and can't get through.

DONT PANIC YET!! The system is a MESS this month! My brother and I both had delays last week but the money showed up 2 days late with NO EXPLANATION!! The DOL never tells you anything useful and the website is useless. Just wait a couple more days before you freak out.

Thanks for the reassurance. The lack of communication is definitely the most frustrating part. If they'd just post an update about delays, it would save everyone a lot of stress.

When I had a delay last year it was because they were doing some kind of quarterly review thing. Something about verifying my base period wages again? The agent told me this happens automatically sometimes. But my situation might be totally different from yours so idk if that helps.

That's interesting - I didn't know they did quarterly reviews. My claim was recertified a couple months ago, so maybe it is something similar. Thanks for sharing your experience.

Just a follow-up: NYSDOL just posted on their Twitter account that they've resolved the processing delay, and all pending payments from Sunday and Monday certifications should be released within 24 hours. You might want to check your payment status tomorrow morning.

UPDATE: Just wanted to let everyone know my payment came through this morning. Looks like it was just the system-wide delay mentioned above. Thanks to everyone for your help and advice!

I'm new to this community but dealing with the same issue right now. My payment is also delayed from Sunday's certification. Reading through all these comments is really helpful - it's reassuring to know this is a known system issue and not something wrong with my specific claim. I was starting to worry I'd made some mistake during certification. Thanks to everyone who shared their experiences and especially @Dylan Fisher for the updates about the Twitter announcement. I'll check my account tomorrow morning and hopefully see the payment has come through!

Welcome to the community @Nia Davis! I'm fairly new here too and was in the exact same boat earlier this week. The stress of not knowing what's going on with your payment is terrible, but everyone here has been super helpful. It's such a relief when you realize it's a system-wide issue and not something you did wrong. Definitely check your account tomorrow morning - based on what others have reported, it sounds like most of the delayed payments are starting to come through now. Fingers crossed for both of us!

Just wanted to share my experience from a few months ago when I had a similar delay. Mine was stuck for 4 days and I was absolutely panicking because I had rent due. Turned out there was a glitch in their system that flagged my account for "excessive earnings" even though I hadn't worked at all that week. The customer service rep said it happens sometimes when their automated system misreads the data. Once they manually reviewed it, the payment was released the same day. The whole thing was super stressful but it taught me that delays don't always mean there's actually a problem with your claim. Sounds like you guys are dealing with a similar system-wide issue based on the Twitter update. Hope everyone gets their payments soon!

Thanks for sharing your experience @CosmicCommander! It's really helpful to hear from someone who went through something similar. The "excessive earnings" glitch you mentioned sounds frustrating but at least it was fixable once you got through to someone. I'm dealing with my first delay right now and was starting to imagine all sorts of worst-case scenarios, but reading everyone's stories here is making me feel much more confident that it'll work out. The automated system flagging things incorrectly seems to be a common theme unfortunately. Really appreciate you taking the time to share what happened with your claim!

I'm experiencing the exact same delay issue! Certified on Sunday as usual but still no payment in my account. This is actually my second time dealing with this - had a similar delay about 6 months ago that lasted 3 days before resolving on its own. Back then I spent hours on hold trying to reach someone and never got through, so this time I'm trying to stay calm and wait it out. Reading through everyone's experiences here is really reassuring - it seems like system delays are unfortunately pretty common with NYSDOL. Thanks to everyone sharing their stories and updates, especially about the Twitter announcement. Definitely going to check my account tomorrow morning and fingers crossed we all see our payments come through!

@Brady Clean I m'in the exact same situation! This is so frustrating but at least we re'not alone. I was starting to think I d'somehow messed up my certification, but seeing how many people are dealing with this makes me feel better. It s'crazy how common these system delays seem to be - you d'think they d'have figured this out by now! I m'also going to wait it out based on what everyone s'saying here instead of trying to call. The 3-day delay you had before gives me hope this will resolve soon. Thanks for sharing your experience!

Just wanted to jump in as someone who's been dealing with NY unemployment for over a year now. These system delays are unfortunately way more common than they should be! I've probably experienced 4-5 delays like this, and every single time it resolved itself within a few days without me having to do anything. The longest was 5 days, which was nerve-wracking, but the money always eventually shows up. What I've learned is that calling usually doesn't help much unless it's been over a week - the reps often just tell you the same thing (that there's a processing delay) and can't manually push your payment through anyway. The Twitter updates are actually pretty reliable when they post them, so sounds like tomorrow should be the day for most people! Hang in there everyone, I know the stress is real when bills are due.

@Hassan Khoury Thank you so much for sharing your long-term experience with this! It s'really reassuring to hear from someone who s'been through multiple delays and always had them resolve. Five days sounds terrifying in the moment, but knowing that the money always eventually came through is exactly what I needed to hear right now. You re'absolutely right about the stress being real when bills are due - I was starting to panic about my rent payment, but your perspective is helping me stay calm and wait this out. Really appreciate you taking the time to share this wisdom with all of us newer folks who are freaking out over our first delays!

I've been dealing with NY unemployment for about 8 months now and can confirm that these delays happen way more often than they should! Usually mine comes through on Tuesday morning like clockwork, but I've had probably 3-4 random delays during that time. The longest was about a week, which was absolutely terrifying when I had bills due, but it always eventually processes. One thing I learned is to screenshot your certification confirmation page - it helps give you peace of mind that you did everything correctly on your end. The system glitches are real and unfortunately pretty common. Based on what @Dylan Fisher shared about the Twitter update, sounds like this should resolve soon for everyone. The waiting is definitely the worst part though!
