WAIT THIS IS HAPPENING TO OTHER PEOPLE TOO?? I thought I was the only one! My claim got flagged for 'review' and they said something about labor market conditions. I've been freaking out for days thinking I did something wrong with my job search log!
The unemployment system is such a joke. They make it impossible to get real information and then wonder why people are frustrated. I've been dealing with NYS Department of Labor for months and still can't get straight answers about anything.
Just went through this exact situation last month! Unemployment benefits absolutely do NOT affect your credit score or show up on credit reports. The only way unemployment could indirectly affect your credit is if you miss payments on existing debts because the benefit amount isn't covering your expenses. But the actual receipt of UI benefits is completely separate from credit reporting.
landlord here - we don't see unemployment benefits on background checks and honestly most of us understand that good tenants sometimes go through job transitions, as long as you can show you're actively looking for work and have some income coming in you should be fine
Had a similar issue last year when unemployment spiked in my area. I was having trouble reaching NYS Department of Labor to clarify job search requirements for my specific situation. Finally used this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me get through to an actual agent. There's a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works. Was able to get clarity on whether I could count certain activities as valid work search contacts.
The unemployment rate affects everyone but NYS Department of Labor still expects you to follow all the rules exactly. I learned this the hard way when I got a disqualification notice for not meeting work search requirements even though there were hardly any jobs posted in my field. Had to go through the whole appeal process.

The WORST type is when they hit you with an overpayment notice on top of everything else. Like not only did they decide you shouldn't have gotten benefits, but now you owe them money back with interest and penalties. That's a nightmare scenario that can follow you for years.

•Oh god I hadn't even thought about that possibility. Do they always do overpayment demands when they reverse a decision?

•Not always, but it can happen depending on the circumstances and how long you received benefits before the disqualification was determined. That's why it's so important to appeal quickly if you disagree with their decision.

been there with the stress and waiting. whatever type of case you have just make sure you keep all your documentation organized. emails, text messages, witness statements, everything. the appeals process is all about having proof to back up your side of the story
