The waiting is the worst part honestly. I remember when I filed last year it felt like forever but looking back it was only about 18 days total. Just make sure you keep doing your weekly certifications even if you haven't gotten paid yet - that's really important or it can delay everything even more.
Don't count on getting anything quickly from NYS Department of Labor. The whole system is a joke and they make you jump through a million hoops just to get what you're entitled to. I've been waiting 3 weeks and still nothing.
THE WHOLE SYSTEM IS RIGGED AGAINST WORKERS! They make it so hard to quit a terrible job because they know employers will just abuse people otherwise. I've seen people stay in horrible situations just because they can't afford to lose their UI eligibility. It's not right.
I had so much trouble getting through to anyone at NYS Department of Labor when my payment was delayed. Spent hours on hold just to get disconnected. Finally found this service called Claimyr that actually got me through to a real person in like 10 minutes. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI and their site is claimyr.com. Might be worth it if you need to talk to someone about payment issues.
The system is so confusing! I got unemployment when my restaurant closed permanently during covid but my friend got denied when she was fired from retail for 'attitude problems.' Sometimes it feels like they just pick and choose randomly.

Also remember about standby status if you're temporarily laid off with a specific return date. That's different from regular UI and has different requirements. And if you're in a union, there might be additional considerations for work sharing programs.

•What's the difference between standby and regular unemployment? Do you still have to do job searches on standby?

The system is so confusing honestly. I applied last month and they're asking for all this documentation about why I left my job when I thought being laid off was straightforward. Now I'm in adjudication for weeks.

•Adjudication can take time especially if there's any question about the circumstances. Make sure you respond to any requests for information quickly to avoid delays in your claim processing.
