Was a bit nervous or untrusting at first, but my calls went thru. First time the wait was a bit long but their customer chat line on their page was helpful and put me at ease that I would receive my call. File as soon as possible! There's a waiting week before benefits start, and the sooner you apply the sooner your claim gets processed. With your work history at the retail job, you should definitely qualify. Just make sure you keep track of your job search activities since NYS Department of Labor requires you to actively look for work.

Interesting, never heard of that service before. The phone lines are definitely impossible to get through to.
Just want to add that if you were laid off vs fired, it makes a big difference for eligibility. Layoffs are usually straightforward, but if you were terminated for cause you might face a disqualification period. Also, if you have any severance pay, that could affect when your benefits start.
I was laid off due to company downsizing, so that should be okay. No severance unfortunately. Thanks for mentioning that distinction!

If you do get fired and NYS Department of Labor initially denies your claim, don't give up! You have the right to appeal their decision. I had to go through the appeal process when I got terminated and it was worth it. The hearing officer was fair and looked at all the evidence. Just make sure you file your weekly claims even during the appeal process.
How long does the appeal process usually take? I'm worried about paying rent if this drags on for months.
Mine took about 6 weeks total, but if you win the appeal you get back pay for all the weeks you were eligible. The key is to keep filing your weekly claims during the whole process.

The whole system is messed up anyway. Employers pay these taxes then fight tooth and nail to deny legitimate claims, and NYS Department of Labor makes it impossible to reach anyone when you have questions. At least now you know your employer was completely wrong about who pays unemployment taxes.
