How to check the status of unemployment claim through NYS Department of Labor online portal?

I submitted my initial UI claim about 10 days ago and I'm not sure how to track what's happening with it. I keep logging into my.ny.gov but I'm confused about where exactly I'm supposed to look for updates. The interface seems different than what my friend described when she filed last year. Can someone walk me through the steps to check my claim status? I want to make sure everything is processing correctly and I'm not missing any required actions on my part.

Once you log into my.ny.gov, go to the 'Unemployment Services' section and look for 'View Payment History' or 'Claim Summary.' Your current status should show there - it might say 'Under Review,' 'Adjudication in Progress,' or 'Approved.' If you see any issues flagged, there should be a link to resolve them. The system updates pretty regularly, usually within 24-48 hours of any changes.

Thanks! I found the Claim Summary section. It shows 'Adjudication in Progress' - does that mean there's a problem with my claim?

Adjudication just means they're reviewing something about your claim - could be verifying your last employer info, checking your reason for separation, or confirming your identity. It's pretty normal and doesn't necessarily mean there's an issue. You should get a determination letter in the mail once they finish reviewing.

How long does adjudication usually take? Mine's been stuck like that for 2 weeks now and I'm getting worried about bills piling up.

It varies a lot - anywhere from 2-6 weeks depending on what they're reviewing. If you need to talk to someone about the delay, I had luck using claimyr.com to get through to an actual NYS Department of Labor agent. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works. Saved me hours of trying to call.

also make sure you're still filing your weekly claims even while it's in adjudication!! I made that mistake and it delayed everything even more

Good point - I have been filing weekly but wasn't sure if I should continue. Thanks for confirming that!

The NYS Department of Labor website is honestly terrible for checking status. Half the time the information is outdated or you get logged out randomly. I've been dealing with this system for months and it's just frustrating. Your best bet is to call but good luck getting through to anyone who can actually help.

I feel this so much! The whole system feels like it's designed to make you give up. At least the weekly claims part works most of the time.

@Aaron Boston mentioned claimyr.com earlier - that might be worth trying instead of calling directly. The regular phone lines are basically impossible to get through on, but having a service that can get you connected to an actual person seems like it could save a lot of headaches with this system.

Just went through this same process last month! One thing that helped me was checking the "Messages" section in addition to the Claim Summary - sometimes they post updates there that don't show up elsewhere. Also, if you haven't already, make sure to set up text/email notifications in your account settings so you get alerts when there are status changes. The waiting is definitely nerve-wracking but most claims do get processed eventually, just takes patience with their system.

That's really helpful about checking the Messages section - I didn't even notice that was there! Just checked and there's actually a message from 3 days ago asking me to verify some employment dates. No wonder my claim is still in adjudication. Thanks for the tip about notifications too, just set those up now.

I went through this exact same confusion when I first filed! Here's what worked for me: after logging into my.ny.gov, look for "Unemployment Insurance Services" (sometimes it's just called "UI Services"), then click on "View and Maintain Account Information." From there you should see options like "Payment History," "Claim Status," and "Correspondence/Messages." The claim status page will show if it's pending, approved, or needs action from you. Also definitely check that Messages/Correspondence section regularly - they often put important requests there that you might miss otherwise. The interface does seem to change periodically which makes it confusing, but those main sections should be consistent.

This is super helpful! I was getting lost in all the different sections. Just found the "View and Maintain Account Information" link you mentioned and it's much clearer now. My status is still showing "Adjudication in Progress" but at least I know where to look for updates. Really appreciate the step-by-step breakdown - the interface is definitely not intuitive for first-time users!

One more thing to watch out for - if your claim status changes to "Approved" but you're not seeing payments yet, check if there's a waiting week. NY has eliminated the waiting week for most claims filed after March 2020, but depending on when you filed and your specific situation, you might still have one. Also, make sure your direct deposit info is set up correctly in the payment preferences section - I've seen people wait weeks for payments only to find out their bank routing number was entered wrong. The whole process is definitely stressful when you're waiting, but most people do get through it eventually!

Thanks for mentioning the direct deposit setup - that's something I definitely need to double-check! I set it up when I first filed but want to make sure I didn't make any typos. Also good to know about the waiting week situation. I filed in early May so hopefully that doesn't apply to me, but I'll keep an eye out for that if my claim gets approved. This whole thread has been incredibly helpful for understanding what to expect with the process!

I just went through this whole process a few weeks ago and it was definitely confusing at first! What really helped me was bookmarking the direct link to the unemployment services page once I found it - saves you from having to navigate through the main my.ny.gov portal every time. Also, I'd recommend checking your status at least every couple of days because sometimes they'll update it but not send you a notification right away. If you're like me and tend to overthink things, try not to stress too much about the "Adjudication in Progress" status - from what I've seen in this community, it's super common and most people's claims do get approved eventually. The waiting is the hardest part but you're doing everything right by staying on top of it and continuing to file your weekly claims!

Great advice about bookmarking the direct link! I've been navigating through the main portal every time and it's such a pain. Also appreciate the reassurance about the adjudication status - I've been checking obsessively every few hours which probably isn't helping my stress levels. Going to try to limit myself to checking every couple days like you suggested. It's nice to hear from someone who just went through this recently and came out the other side successfully!

I'm in a similar situation - filed about 2 weeks ago and have been struggling to navigate the my.ny.gov portal. This thread has been incredibly helpful! Just wanted to add that I discovered you can also access unemployment services through the NY.gov mobile app, which sometimes loads faster than the website. The mobile interface is a bit different but has the same key sections everyone mentioned. Also, if you're having trouble finding the "Unemployment Insurance Services" link, try clearing your browser cache - I was getting an older version of the page that was missing some of the navigation options. Thanks to everyone who shared their experiences, it's reassuring to know this confusion is normal and that most people do get through the process eventually!

Thanks for mentioning the mobile app option! I didn't even know that existed and will definitely try it if the website keeps being slow. The browser cache tip is also really helpful - I've been having some weird loading issues that might be related to that. It's been so reassuring reading everyone's experiences in this thread. When you're sitting there staring at "Adjudication in Progress" for days, it's easy to start imagining worst-case scenarios. But seeing how many people have been through the exact same thing and eventually got their claims processed makes me feel a lot better about the whole situation.

I'm new to this community but going through the exact same thing right now! Filed my claim about a week ago and have been so lost trying to figure out where to check my status. This thread is a goldmine of information - I had no idea about the Messages section or that you need to keep filing weekly claims during adjudication. Just logged in and found my claim is also showing "Adjudication in Progress" which was making me panic, but reading everyone's experiences here is really reassuring. Going to bookmark the direct unemployment services link and set up those notifications right now. Thanks to everyone who shared their step-by-step guidance - it's exactly what newcomers like me need to navigate this confusing system!

Welcome to the community! I'm also pretty new to filing unemployment and this thread has been incredibly helpful for me too. It's such a relief to find other people going through the same confusing process. I was also panicking when I first saw "Adjudication in Progress" but everyone here has made it clear that's totally normal. One thing I learned from reading through all these comments is to definitely check that Messages section regularly - apparently they sometimes put important requests there that you might miss otherwise. Good luck with your claim, and thanks for adding to the conversation! It's nice to know there are others of us navigating this system for the first time.

Just wanted to chime in as someone who recently went through this whole process! I filed my initial claim about 3 weeks ago and went through the exact same confusion with the my.ny.gov portal. What really helped me was creating a simple checklist based on everyone's advice here: 1) Log into my.ny.gov and go to "Unemployment Insurance Services", 2) Check "Claim Summary" for current status, 3) Check "Messages/Correspondence" for any action items, 4) Verify payment info in account settings, and 5) Continue filing weekly claims even during adjudication. My claim was also stuck in "Adjudication in Progress" for about 3 weeks, but it finally got approved last Friday! The waiting is definitely nerve-wracking, but this community's advice about checking the Messages section regularly was crucial - I had two requests for additional info that I would have missed otherwise. Hang in there, the system is slow but it does work eventually!

This checklist is fantastic! As someone who just started this process, having a clear step-by-step approach like this is exactly what I needed. I've been feeling overwhelmed trying to keep track of everything, but breaking it down into these 5 key steps makes it so much more manageable. It's really encouraging to hear that your claim got approved after 3 weeks - gives me hope that mine will eventually work out too! I'm definitely going to save this checklist and follow it religiously. Thanks for sharing your experience and for emphasizing the Messages section again - seems like that's a crucial piece that's easy to overlook but super important for keeping things moving.

Just wanted to add my experience as someone who went through this recently! I filed my claim about 6 weeks ago and had the same confusion navigating the portal. One thing I discovered that hasn't been mentioned yet - if you're having trouble finding the unemployment services section, sometimes it helps to log out completely and log back in. I was getting stuck on an old cached version of the site that was missing some menu options. Also, I found it helpful to check my claim status at the same time each day rather than randomly throughout the day - it helped reduce my anxiety about the waiting process. The "Adjudication in Progress" status lasted about 4 weeks for me, but once it changed to "Approved," my first payment came through within 3 business days. Keep filing those weekly claims and checking the Messages section regularly - you've got this!

Thanks for the tip about logging out and back in! I've been having some weird issues where certain menu options seem to disappear or load differently each time I visit the site. Your point about checking at the same time each day is really smart - I've been obsessively refreshing throughout the day which is probably just making me more anxious. It's encouraging to hear that once your status changed to "Approved," the payment came through so quickly. I'm currently at about 2 weeks in "Adjudication in Progress" so hopefully I'm getting closer to that approval stage. Really appreciate everyone in this thread sharing their timelines and experiences - it makes this whole confusing process feel much less isolating!

I'm going through this exact same situation right now! Filed my claim about 8 days ago and have been so confused about where to find my status updates. This entire thread has been incredibly helpful - I had no idea about the Messages section or that I needed to keep filing weekly claims during adjudication. Just logged in using everyone's step-by-step directions and found my claim shows "Adjudication in Progress" too. Reading all these experiences makes me feel so much better about the waiting process. I was starting to worry something was wrong with my claim, but it sounds like this status is totally normal. Going to bookmark the direct unemployment services link and set up those text notifications right now. Thanks to everyone who shared their detailed guidance - it's exactly what us newcomers need to navigate this system!

Welcome to the community! I'm also pretty new to this whole unemployment process and this thread has been a lifesaver. It's so reassuring to see that pretty much everyone goes through the same confusion with the my.ny.gov portal - I was starting to think I was just terrible at navigating websites! The "Adjudication in Progress" status definitely seems to be the norm rather than the exception, which makes me feel a lot better about my own situation. I'm about 12 days into the process and seeing that same status. One thing that's helped me is writing down all the key steps from this thread so I don't forget to check everything. The weekly claims filing during adjudication was something I almost missed - so glad people mentioned that here! Thanks for adding your experience to the conversation, and good luck with your claim!
