NYS Department of Labor unemployment claim stuck showing 'in progress' - why does my unemployment say progress?
Filed my UI claim about 10 days ago and it's been showing 'in progress' status this whole time. I keep checking my.ny.gov but nothing changes. Haven't gotten any requests for additional documents or anything. Just says 'in progress' with no explanation of what they're actually doing or how long it should take. Is this normal? Getting really anxious about when I'll actually start receiving payments.

This is pretty typical for new claims. NYS Department of Labor has to verify your employment history and earnings before they can approve benefits. The 'in progress' status usually means they're doing their initial review which can take 2-3 weeks. They'll update your account when there's movement or if they need additional info from you.

•Thanks, that's reassuring. I was worried I did something wrong when I filed. Should I keep doing my weekly claims even though it says in progress?

Yeah mine said in progress for like 3 weeks before it got approved. Super frustrating but just be patient

•Did you have to do anything special or did it just change on its own? Mine's been in progress for 2 weeks now and I'm starting to stress about it.

I had this exact problem last month and couldn't get through to anyone at NYS Department of Labor no matter how many times I called. Found this service called Claimyr at claimyr.com that actually gets you connected to real agents. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI showing how it works. Used it to check on my claim status and found out there was actually an issue with my employer verification that wasn't showing up online.

•Interesting, never heard of that before. Was it expensive? Getting through to NYS Department of Labor directly seems impossible.

•Wait so there can be issues that don't show up on the website? That's terrifying. How are we supposed to know if something's wrong then?

IN PROGRESS IS JUST CODE FOR 'WE'LL GET TO IT WHEN WE FEEL LIKE IT' - been dealing with NYS Department of Labor for years and they never give you real timelines. Could be 2 weeks could be 2 months depending on their mood.
