Does ny unemployment still pay the extra $300 after account reopening?
Just found out my unemployment account was closed because i hadnt certified for 5 weeks (was in hospital with appendicitis then complications, couldn't do anything). I finally got through to someone on the phone and they reopened my account and said my payments should be backdated for the weeks I missed. My question is - will I still get the extra $300 federal payments for those missed weeks? The agent wasn't clear about this part and I'm counting on that money to catch up on rent. Has anyone gone through this? I originally lost my job in April 2023 when my company downsized.

Yes you should get the backdated $300 payments too as long as the weeks were during the time the federal supplement was active. I had a similar issue when I had to go take care of my sick mom for a month and couldn't certify. When they reopened my claim they paid both the state amount and the federal $300 for each eligible week. Took about 10 days for it all to show up in my account though.

Oh thank goodness 😅 I was worried I was only gonna get the base amount. Did you have to do anything special to make sure you got the federal part too?

Nope! It just came through automatically with all the backpay. The system knows which weeks were eligible for the federal boost.

that's actually not always true, my friend had to specifically request the federal portion after they got their regular UI fixed. the system is so jacked up sometimes 🙄

Really? That sucks. The system is so inconsistent. Maybe OP should specifically ask about it when they call just to be safe.

After weeks of getting nowhere with ny unemployment, I finally used this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) and got an actual human on the phone in like 20 minutes. They called for me, stayed on hold, then connected me to an agent when someone picked up. Talking to that agent got all my $ unlocked so fast - worth every penny for the callback service since I was about to lose my apartment. Check out this video on how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

This sounds too good to be true. Has anyone else actually used this?

Totally get the skepticism - I felt the same way. But after spending DAYS trying to call myself and getting nowhere, this actually worked. They just dial for you basically and keep you from having to sit through the hold music for hours.

Yep, that's literally all it is. They just handle the calling and hold time. When an agent picks up, they connect you. Saved me so much frustration.

I had the EXACT same situation happen to me (except it was a car accident not appendicitis). From my experience, you WILL get the $300 federal supplement for any missed weeks as long as those weeks fell during the period when the supplement was active. Just make sure they correctly classify your reason for not certifying as medical/illness related so it doesn't count against you.

Honestly the phone reps give different answers depending who you talk to. If I were you I'd call back and specifically ask about the $300 supplement to make sure. I've had to call 3-4 times sometimes to get consistent answers about my claim. The ny unemployment system is a complete mess rn.

This is the truth! I've gotten completely opposite answers from different reps on the same day. It's like a lottery who you get on the phone.

That's what I was afraid of... I'm gonna try calling again tomorrow but I already know it'll take forever to get through 😩

Try calling right when they open at 8am. That's when I've had the best luck getting through quickly.

I don't think the $300 is even active anymore? Didn't it end a while back? Or am I confusing it with something else?

The extra federal money did end already, but OP is asking about backdated payments for weeks they missed while it was still active.

This happened to me last summer. Here's what you need to know: - YES, you will get the $300 federal supplement for any eligible weeks - MAKE SURE they properly recorded your reason for not certifying as medical (this is crucial) - ASK THEM for a specific timeframe on when to expect payment - DOCUMENT everything - who you spoke with, reference numbers, etc. - CHECK your payment history online daily If you're still having trouble reaching someone by phone, I highly recommend claimyr.com - it's a service that calls for you and connects you to an agent when they answer. Saved me days of frustration after I couldn't get through for weeks. The backdated money hit my account about 7 business days after they fixed my claim.

Thank you for this detailed answer! Really appreciate it. I'll make sure to check all those boxes when I call back.

Anyone else notice how the entire NY unemployment system seems designed to make people give up? 🙄 Like they WANT us to miss certifications or get frustrated with the process.

Facts 💯 My cousin literally just gave up after trying for 3 months. The system is broken on purpose.

Idk man, when the same "glitches" always seem to benefit the state and not the claimants, it starts to look intentional 🤷♂️

It really depends on your claim date and when those missed weeks were. The $300 federal supplement isn't permanent - it was only for specific time periods. What weeks exactly are you trying to claim? That would help us give better advice.

Dont waste ur time calling the regular number, you'll never get thru. I spent 2 weeks trying before I found this hack: call your local state assembly member's office. They have direct lines to unemployment specialists who can fix this stuff fast. Fixed my account in 48 hours after I'd been trying for weeks on my own.

THIS! My assemblyman's office fixed my claim when it was "pending" for 3 months. Best advice here.

I tried this and they told me there was nothing they could do and to just keep calling 🤦♀️ guess it depends on your district

Make sure you check your email/mail carefully! When they reactivate your account after a gap they sometimes send you a questionnaire that you have to fill out to explain why you didn't certify. If you miss that form, the whole process gets delayed again. Ask the agent specifically if there's any additional documentation they need from you.

They didn't mention any forms but I'll keep an eye out. Thanks for the heads up!

I'm actually going through this EXACT situation right now. Had surgery, didn't certify for 6 weeks, account got closed. Called about 300 times before finally getting through last week. They reopened my claim and my backpay INCLUDING the $300 supplement just hit my account this morning. So yes, it works! Just be patient.

Technically u should get it but ny unemployment is completley FUBAR right now. I've been waiting 10 weeks for a simple issue to be fixed and keep getting different answers from every rep. I'd suggest calling everyday until it's fixed. sorry ur dealing with this 😔

The $300 is retroactive for eligible weeks, but here's the important part - you need to make sure the agent marked your claim with the right code for medical reasons. If they just reopened it without the proper coding, you might run into issues. Did they specifically mention anything about a medical exemption or code when you talked to them?

Jackson Carter
They did ask me for details about the hospital stay and said they would note it as medical, but didn't mention any specific codes.

That should be fine then. Just keep an eye on your payment history in the online portal to make sure everything comes through correctly.

When I had something similar happen, I had to call and specifically request the federal supplement portion after they fixed my regular benefits. The system doesn't always process both automatically. Call back and ask specifically about the $300.

the nysdol website has a FAQ about this exact situation. from what i remember reading, yes you'll get the $300 for any eligible weeks as long as the system shows you were entitled to regular benefits for those weeks. also make sure they properly coded your hospital stay so you don't get penalized for not doing the work search requirements!
