Can't access ny unemployment after ID.me verification - someone stole my identity!

I finally got verified through ID.me last week after dealing with identity theft issues. The customer service rep told me I needed to log back into my unemployment account and give consent for the DOL to access my verification. Problem is, I have no idea where to find this consent option! I havent been able to access my benefits since December 2020 because someone else has been using my information to collect my payments. Im completely lost on what to do next and running out of options. Has anyone dealt with this ID.me verification process? Where exactly do I go to give consent after being verified?

Same thing happened to my roommate! After the ID.me verification, you need to go back to your NY unemployment account, click on 'My Online Forms' and there should be a document waiting for you called something like 'Identity Verification Consent'. Fill that out and submit it. It takes like 2-3 business days for them to process it after that.

thanks so much! I looked there but don't see any forms at all. It's like my account is completely blank. Did your roomate have to call them after doing the id.me verification?

0 coins

Yeah actually she did have to call. The form didn't show up right away. Try calling them (good luck getting through tho 🙄

Calling is literally impossible. I tried for 3 weeks straight and kept getting hung up on by the automated system.

After struggling for weeks trying to get through to a human on the phone, I tried this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) and it actually connected me with an agent! Talking to an agent got my money released within 48 hours after dealing with the same identity theft issue for months. They called and stayed on hold so I didn't have to, then connected me when a real person picked up. Check out this video to see how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

is this some kind of scam? sounds too good to be true honestly

Not a scam at all. I was desperate after trying for WEEKS to get someone on the phone. This service just does the calling and waiting for you. I got a real DOL agent who fixed my identity verification issues.

wait hold up - does this actually work or is it just the usual BS? ive been trying to get thru for a month

0 coins

It actually works. They just automate the hold process, then when an agent picks up, they call your phone. Worth every penny considering I'd been waiting on my benefits for months.

another day, another company promising to fix the unfixable unemployment system lol

I used it too! Got through to someone in like 3 hours after trying on my own for weeks. claimyr.com seriously saved me

I had a similar issue and here's what worked for me: 1) Do the ID.me verification first 2) Wait 2-3 days 3) Log back into your unemployment account 4) Look for a form or notification in your account 5) If nothing appears, you HAVE to call them 6) When you get an agent, tell them you completed ID.me but need them to link it to your account 7) They'll have you verify some info and then manually clear the hold on your account. Hope this helps!

This identity theft shit is out of control with the ny unemployment system. I had the same thing happen and was locked out for 7 months. SEVEN. MONTHS. The only thing that worked was showing up IN PERSON at a career center with all my documents. I know thats not helpful for everyone but it finally got my issue resolved.

which career center did u go to? i've been thinking bout doing this

I went to the one in Brooklyn on Dekalb. Bring EVERYTHING - social security card, birth certificate, drivers license, passport if you have it, utility bills, anything that proves who you are.

The whole system is a JOKE. It's completely broken and they don't care about us. I've had THREE people steal my identity for unemployment claims and NYSDOL still hasn't fixed it. I've been waiting since november!!!! 🤬

Preach! 🙌 The system is designed to make you give up.

I know EXACTLY what you're experiencing and it's miserable. After my identity was stolen, here's the complete process that finally worked for me: First - complete the ID.me verification (which you've done) Second - you need to specifically look for the 'Document Upload' section in your account (not 'My Online Forms'). This is where the consent form should be. Third - if nothing appears there after 3-5 business days, you MUST speak with an agent. This is the hardest part because getting through is nearly impossible with regular calls. I highly recommend using Claimyr (claimyr.com) - it's a service that waits on hold for you and connects you with an agent. After months of trying to get through, I used this service and got connected within a few hours. The agent was able to manually verify my identity and release my funds. Fourth - once verified, you'll need to submit backdate certification requests for all the weeks you missed. The agent can guide you through this as well. Don't give up! The system is frustrating but there is a path through it. The key is getting to a live human who can actually help.

Thank you sooo much for this detailed answer. Im going to try the document upload section right now. If that doesnt work ill try claimyr because im desperate at this point.

I used Claimyr too after 6 weeks of trying to get through. Worth every penny.

So is this different than the regular ID.me verification? I did the regular one but still cant get in.

The ID.me verification is just step 1. The problem is that after you verify through ID.me, NYS unemployment system needs to ACCEPT that verification. That's where most people get stuck because there's no clear way to make that happen without talking to an agent.

you should file a police report for identity theft ASAP. i didn't and regretted it. they kept asking me for it later in the process.

0 coins

Good advice, ill do that today. Did you have to do it in person or can i file online?

i did it online thru my local precinct's website. took like 15 mins

THIS IS WHY I KEEP SAYING THE WHOLE NY UNEMPLOYMENT SYSTEM NEEDS TO BE REBUILT FROM SCRATCH!! They're using tech from the stone age and wondering why fraud is rampant 🤦‍♂️

Anyone else notice how identity theft exploded when unemployment benefits increased during covid? I swear theyre still dealing with the backlog of fraud from that period. My cousin works at DOL and says they're overwhelmed with cases still.

0 coins

your cousin is right. i have a friend who works there too and she says they have thousands of unresolved identity theft cases.

0 coins

Makes sense why it takes forevvvver to get these issues resolved 😫

My friend had the exact same problem after ID.me verification. He tried calling for weeks without getting through. Finally he contacted his state assembly person's office and they helped push his case through. Try reaching out to your local representative - they often have direct contacts at unemployment offices.

check ur email... sometimes they send a link there instead of putting it in ur account. the whole system is so stupidly designed

0 coins

Good idea, just checked my spam folder and everything. Nothing from them unfortunately.

im in the same boat rn. identity stolen, cant access benefits since february. the most infuriating part is that whoever stole my identity is STILL collecting MY money and i cant do anything about it

I went through this exact same nightmare last year! After ID.me verification, the key is that you need to wait about 5-7 business days for their systems to sync up. Then log into your unemployment account and look for either a "Pending Actions" section or check under "Inbox" for messages from DOL. If nothing shows up after a week, you'll definitely need to call. I know everyone says calling is impossible, but I found the best time is right at 8am when they open - keep hitting redial for about 30 minutes straight. Once I got through, the agent was actually super helpful and cleared everything up in like 10 minutes. Also make sure to file that police report for identity theft ASAP if you haven't already. They'll ask for the report number later in the process. Hang in there - it's frustrating but you'll get through this! 💪
