Anyone heard about NY unemployment tax refunds coming May 13th?

I saw something online about more NY unemployment tax refunds going out around May 13th, 2025. Has anyone else heard anything about this? My friend said he got an email but I haven't gotten anything. I filed in February and still waiting on my refund. Getting anxious since I could really use that money right now.

yeah i saw that too on some news site. think they said something about the next batch of refunds for ppl who overpaid taxes on unemployment last year

The NY Department of Taxation and Finance announced they're processing unemployment tax refunds in batches throughout May and June. May 13th is just one of several dates. Whether you receive a refund depends on if you overpaid taxes on your unemployment benefits in 2024. They're prioritizing simple returns filed before March 15th first, then moving to more complex returns.

This is 100% correct. My sister works for the tax department and confirmed they're sending these out in waves. The May 13th batch is mainly for single filers with no dependents who filed in January or early February.

I just got an official notice yesterday about this! It said my refund of $872 should arrive by direct deposit on May 13th. I filed my return on February 2nd and had about $12,000 in unemployment benefits last year. The notice mentioned that I qualified because I paid taxes on those benefits at a higher rate than I should have.

It came by email from nys.tax@tax.ny.gov - check your spam folder maybe? The subject was "Notice of Tax Adjustment - Unemployment Benefits 2024"

DONT GET EXCITED YET. This happened last year too and I never got ANYTHING even though I qualified. The tax dept website had a "processing" status for MONTHS and when I called they just said "it's still processing" over and over. The system is BROKEN and they don't care about us!!!

I had the same issue last year but finally got through to someone who fixed it. After weeks of calling the standard number and getting nowhere, I used Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get past the phone queue. They got me connected to an agent in about 20 minutes instead of spending hours redialing. Has anyone who filed with TurboTax gotten their refund yet? I read somewhere that there might be delays with certain tax software? I'm so confused and the NY unemployment website is USELESS as usual.

I used TurboTax and got my notice, so I don't think the tax software matters. What's more important is when you filed and whether your return had any complications. Simple returns are being processed first.

To clarify for everyone: These refunds are specifically for people who paid taxes on unemployment benefits at a higher rate than they should have based on the tax law changes passed in January 2025. The NY Dept of Taxation is proactively reviewing returns and issuing refunds in batches: - May 13: Early filers (Jan-Feb 10) with simple returns - May 27: Mid-season filers (Feb 11-Mar 15) with simple returns - June 10: Early filers with complex returns - June 24: Mid-season and late filers with complex returns You don't need to do anything to receive this refund if you qualify. The department will automatically calculate and issue it based on your filed return.

My cousin works for H&R Block and said a lot of people are confused about this. It's NOT the same as your regular tax refund! This is an ADDITIONAL refund because of the unemployment tax law that changed retroactively. So if you already got your regular tax refund, you might still get this one too if you collected unemployment in 2024.

Just called the tax department (took FOREVER to get through) and they confirmed these refunds are legit but the rep said NOT EVERYONE will get one! You only qualify if you had unemployment income AND your adjusted gross income was under $150,000. Also they said some people might get notices AFTER the refund is deposited so don't panic if you haven't gotten an email yet!

Thanks for sharing! That's good to know about the income limit. My AGI was definitely under $150k so hopefully I'll qualify. And good to hear they might deposit before sending notices - I'll keep an eye on my bank account.

I just checked my NY tax account online and there's a new section that shows "Unemployment Benefit Adjustment" with a status. Mine says "Processing - Expected issue date: May 13, 2025" with the amount! Everyone should check their online accounts if they have one set up.
