Same thing happened to me last year. Basically once your benefit days are gone, they're gone. But here's what I did - I called the unemployment office relentlessly until someone picked up and they confirmed there was nothing else I could do except wait until my benefit year ended. But at least I knew for sure instead of wondering.
Honestly like a week of trying. I would set aside 2 hours every morning and just keep redialing. Pure torture.
Pro tip: use claimyr.com - I wasted so much time trying to call before discovering this service. They do the calling and connect you when a rep answers.
This is going to sound weird but try calling RIGHT when they open and press the Spanish option. The Spanish-speaking agents all speak English too and the wait time is usually WAY shorter. Got through in 15 mins this way after trying the English line for weeks.
Can confirm this works but don't tell everyone or they'll catch on and it'll stop working lol 🤫
Haha sorry for spilling the secrets! Just trying to help a fellow sufferer of the NY unemployment hellscape 😂
Reading these stories is making me so anxious. I just filed my first claim last week and now I'm terrified. This system seems absolutely nightmarish.
If your claim is straightforward you might be fine! A lot of people posting are those with issues (selection bias). Good luck!
Unpopular opinion: sometimes it really is better to take any job and keep looking while employed. Being unemployed for too long creates a gap that makes it even harder to get hired later.
Depends on the field. In tech, taking a huge step down can actually hurt your chances at getting back to your level later.
that's fair - obviously everyone's situation is different. just sharing what worked in my experience
has anyone tried going to the actual unemployment office in person? wondering if thats faster than calling?
They dont really have public offices anymore where u can just walk in. everything is phone or online now. its stupid.
Make sure you get identity theft protection ASAP! These scammers usually don't stop at just unemployment - they'll try to open credit cards, loans, everything. I recommend LifeLock or similar service. I learned this the hard way after my unemployment was hacked and then suddenly I had 3 new credit cards opened in my name the next month.
Oh god, that's terrifying. I'll look into that right away.

Did you make any changes to your claim recently? Like updated your address or anything? Sometimes even small changes can trigger payment holds while they verify the new info.

•Nope - haven't made any changes at all. That's what's so weird. It's been working perfectly fine until now.
