Has anyone with a 420 code on their transcript finally received a refund date this year? How long did you wait?

I checked WMR yesterday and it's still on processing. Looked at my transcript today and noticed code 420 with no additional information. My return was accepted back in March 2024. Anyone else dealing with a 420 code this year? If you had this in the past, how long did it take to get a resolution and your refund date? This is kind of frustrating since I was counting on that money for some home repairs.

The 420 code means your return is under review. It's essentially an audit indicator, though not always a full audit. The IRS is taking a closer look at something on your return. Typically, you'll receive a CP75 or similar notice in the mail requesting additional documentation. Don't panic - this is actually fairly common, especially if you claimed certain credits like EITC or CTC. Timeline varies widely. Some people see resolution in 60 days, others wait 6+ months. Best course of action: 1. Wait for the official letter from IRS explaining what they need 2. Respond promptly with EXACTLY what they request 3. Consider creating an account on IRS.gov to check transcript updates 4. If you don't receive a letter within 30 days, call the IRS (though good luck getting through) One thing that helped me understand my transcript better was using taxr.ai - it explained all the codes and gave me a timeline prediction based on my specific situation. Saved me hours of googling random codes and freaking out.

0 coins

How much does taxr.ai cost? Is it worth it?

0 coins

Honestly, it was the best money I've spent dealing with this tax nightmare. It explained my transcript in plain english and helped me understand what was actually happening. They even predicted when my refund would come and they were only off by 3 days! Way better than the vague "your return is being processed" message on WMR.

0 coins

Did u need to give them ur SSN or anything? Sounds sketchy

0 coins

No personal info needed beyond what's on your transcript that you upload. And the analysis comes back super fast. My return was complicated this year with self-employment income and EITC so understanding all the codes was a lifesaver.

0 coins

Might check it out. My transcript looks like hieroglyphics to me 🤣

i've been stuck with a 420 code since February and still waiting... guess i'll see if taxr can make sense of this mess

0 coins

I was in the exact same situation last year with a 420 code appearing in April. I spent WEEKS trying to figure out what was happening by searching forums and watching YouTube videos. Got nowhere. Finally found this tool called taxr.ai and it actually explained everything on my transcript in plain english. It showed me exactly why I was under review and even predicted when my refund would come through. I've been recommending it to everyone - saved me so much headache trying to be a tax detective! https://taxr.ai

0 coins

Sounds interesting. How exactly does it work? Does it just read your transcript or does it do more?

0 coins

It basically analyzes all those cryptic codes and dates on your transcript and explains what each thing means specifically for YOUR situation. It also shows potential issues that might be causing delays and gives you a timeline estimate. I was blown away by how accurate it was - my refund came exactly when they predicted!

0 coins

OMG THANK YOU FOR THIS RECOMMENDATION! Just tried taxr and it immediately identified why my return was flagged (an income reporting mismatch I had no idea about). Now I know exactly what documents to gather before the IRS even sends me a letter. YOU ARE A LIFESAVER!!! 🙏🙏🙏

another app that wants our money 🙄

0 coins

Honestly when you're waiting on thousands in refund money and have no idea what's happening, getting actual answers is worth it. I was losing sleep checking WMR every day for months before this.

0 coins

Had a 420 code last April. It was pure hell trying to get any info from the IRS. Couldn't get through on phone for WEEKS. Finally found this app called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me a callback from an actual IRS agent. The agent confirmed I needed to send in some docs for verification due to a mismatch with my W2. Got everything cleared up and had my refund 3 weeks later. That callback service was seriously worth every penny considering how many hours I wasted on hold before that.

0 coins

Wait does that actually work? I've been trying to reach someone at the IRS for like 2 months

0 coins

Yes! I was totally skeptical but desperate after getting disconnected 6 times. The IRS called me back in about 45 minutes. Talking to an actual person made all the difference - she told me exactly what I needed to submit and where to send it.

0 coins

This sounds like a scam...

0 coins

Thought the same thing initially but it's just a service that navigates the phone tree and holds your place in line. When they reach an agent, you get a call. Completely changed my situation - got my $4700 refund after being stuck for months.

0 coins

I've spent literally 15 hours on hold with IRS over the past month. Going to try this tomorrow, I'm desperate at this point

0 coins

just used claimyr this morning after seeing this. got a callback in 1 hr 20 min. agent told me exactly why my return was under review. best money i've spent all year considering i've been waiting on $3218 since february 🙌

0 coins

Got a 420 code last year. Took 4 months to get resolved. They sent me a letter asking for proof of my kids living with me for child tax credit. Sent back birth certs, school records, medical bills etc. Then radio silence for 2 months. Finally got my refund in August. The whole process is absolutely broken.

0 coins

Did you ever call them during those months of waiting?

0 coins

Tried calling 9 times. Got through once after waiting 3.5 hrs on hold just to be told "your case is still being processed" and that I just had to wait. Most useless phone call of my life.

0 coins

same thing happened to me! they wanted proof for EITC and then just ghosted me for months 😡

0 coins

I had a 420 appear in early February. Received letter CP05 asking for no action - just telling me they were reviewing my return. By late May I still had no update, so I called the IRS Taxpayer Advocate Service. They opened a hardship case for me (I was facing eviction without my refund) and my refund was processed within 3 weeks after that. Not saying TAS is a magic solution but if you're truly experiencing financial hardship because of the delay, they might be able to help.

0 coins

How did you contact TAS? Their phone lines were busy every time I tried to call.

0 coins

I had to be persistent. Called right when they opened at 7am and finally got through. You can also try your local office directly - the numbers are on the TAS website. Just be prepared to document your hardship. They won't help for just being annoyed at waiting.

0 coins

Yes! Got my date yesterday!!!! Filed late February, got the 420 in March, CP05 letter came a week later. Waited and waited, transcript finally updated last week with DDD for 6/19. Took about 14 weeks total. Hang in there!

0 coins

Thanks for sharing! Gives me some hope. Did you have to submit any additional documents or did they just process it eventually?

0 coins

They never asked for anything. Letter just said they were reviewing and I'd either get my refund or a request for more info within 60 days. Ended up taking about 100 days but at least its finally coming!

0 coins

this is my 3rd year in a row getting that stupid 420 code. irs is just holding our money as long as possible for free loans. last year took 5 months. year before that was 7 months. this year im at 8 weeks so far. system is completely rigged against us 🤬

0 coins

Had 420 code show up April 2nd. Got CP05 letter April 15th. Called IRS after 60 days passed (got through on my 4th attempt). They told me I needed to verify education expenses for American Opportunity Credit. Faxed my college transcript and tuition statement on May 20th. Refund hit my account June 3rd. Total time was about 9 weeks from 420 code to refund.

0 coins

wait they actually picked up the phone? what dark magic did you use? 😂

0 coins

Called at exactly 7am on a Tuesday. Still waited 90 minutes on hold but at least got through. Weds-Fri seems impossible to reach anyone.

0 coins

Lucky you got a reasonable timeframe. I'm on week 16 of my 60 day review 🙄

0 coins

I'm probably an outlier, but I had a 420 code in February that resolved itself in about 3 weeks without me doing anything. No letters, no calls, just suddenly got a DDD on my transcript and the money a week later. From what I've read online though, that's extremely unusual.

0 coins

you must be the IRS commissioners favorite person 😂

0 coins

It's completely random. My sister and I both had 420 codes this year. We filed the same week. She got her refund in 5 weeks, I'm still waiting after 4 months. We both claimed EITC, similar incomes, similar situations. Makes zero sense.

0 coins

YES, mine finally updated last week after 11 weeks with a 420 code. No documents requested, just the standard CP05 notice that they were "reviewing" my return. Check your transcript - if you see code 571 (reversal of additional tax) followed by 846 (refund issued), you're getting close! 916 means a letter has been sent, but it's usually just closing the review.

0 coins

Exactly! The 571 is the key code to look for. That means they're finishing up the review. Usually see a DDD within 1-2 weeks after that appears.

0 coins

Thanks for the tip! I just checked again and don't have a 571 yet. Just the 420 still sitting there taunting me 😔

0 coins

My experience: filed early March, 420 code appeared April 1st, CP05 letter on April 12th, then NOTHING until June 8th when transcripts suddenly updated with DDD of June 15th. Roughly 14 weeks from filing to refund. Never called, never submitted anything additional. The whole process is a black box.

0 coins

It's totally dependent on WHY you got the 420 code. If it's a simple verification, might be weeks. If they think you're lying about dependents or income, could be months. If they suspect fraud, could be a year+. Without knowing what triggered the review, impossible to give a timeline.

0 coins

How do you find out why? My CP05 letter just said they were "verifying" my return. Nothing specific.

0 coins

You don't really know until/unless they send a followup letter requesting specific documents. The CP05 is intentionally vague. If they don't request anything, it usually means their internal verification process is just taking time.

0 coins

Got my DDD yesterday after having a 420 since February! I literally screamed when I saw the 846 code finally appear. Took almost 5 months but it's finally happening. Keep checking those transcripts!

0 coins

congrats! what's your DDD?

0 coins

6/21! Can't wait to see that deposit hit 💰

0 coins

The feeling when you finally see that 846 code is better than Christmas morning 😂

0 coins

If you have the 420 code, I HIGHLY recommend pulling your wage and income transcript as well as your return transcript. I did this and found the issue - my employer reported $300 more income than I put on my return (their mistake). Once I identified this, I called IRS and explained. They released my refund about 3 weeks later.

0 coins

Dealing with a 420 for almost 6 months now. Filed in January, still nothing. Called multiple times, always get the "60-90 more days" response. System is completely broken. I'm giving up and just assuming I'll never see that money. 🤷‍♂️

0 coins

Don't give up! File a claim with Taxpayer Advocate Service and tell them you're facing financial hardship. That sometimes moves things along.

0 coins

i was stuck in 420 hell last year. ended up using a tax pro who discovered the issue was an unreported 1099 from a side gig i forgot about. once i filed an amended return it took about 60 days to get my (now smaller) refund. sometimes its worth paying someone to help figure it out rather than waiting forever.

0 coins

Cycle code matters too! Look at the cycle code on your account transcript. If it ends in 05, your account updates weekly (Thursday night/Friday morning). If it ends in 01-04, it's daily updates. Knowing your cycle helped me stop checking obsessively every day when I knew updates only came on Fridays for me.

0 coins

This is so true! I'm a cycle 05 and wasted so much time checking daily until I learned this.

0 coins

Going through this right now too. I called IRS and the agent said a 420 is triggered by a potential mismatch between what was reported by employers/financial institutions and what's on your return. In my case, it was missing interest income from a bank account I forgot about. Double check your wage and income transcript against your return!

0 coins

I'm in the exact same boat! Filed in March 2024 and just noticed the 420 code on my transcript this week. No letter yet but WMR still says "processing." Reading through everyone's experiences here is both reassuring and terrifying - seems like it could be anywhere from a few weeks to several months. I'm definitely going to check my wage and income transcript like some of you suggested to see if there's an obvious mismatch. Really hoping it's something simple that gets resolved quickly since I was also counting on this refund for some necessary expenses. Thanks for sharing your timelines everyone - at least now I know I'm not alone in this waiting game! 🤞

0 coins

Welcome to the 420 club nobody wants to be in! 😅 You're definitely not alone - this thread shows just how common this issue has become. The fact that you filed in March 2024 and are just now seeing the code is actually pretty typical from what I'm reading here. Definitely pull that wage and income transcript ASAP - seems like a lot of people found their answers there (missing 1099s, employer reporting errors, etc.). Even if you don't find anything obvious, at least you'll know you've done your due diligence. The waiting is the absolute worst part. I'd suggest setting up transcript monitoring so you're not obsessively checking every day. Based on what others have shared, you'll likely either get a letter asking for docs or just suddenly see movement on your transcript. Hang in there! 🤞

I've been dealing with a 420 code since early April and I'm still waiting too. Filed in February, got the dreaded code in April, received my CP05 letter a few weeks later saying they were "reviewing" my return. It's now been over 3 months with zero updates. What's driving me crazy is the complete lack of communication. The letter said 60 days, but here I am at 12+ weeks with nothing. Called the IRS twice - first time waited 2.5 hours just to be told "keep waiting." Second time got disconnected after 3 hours on hold. Reading through everyone's experiences here is actually really helpful though. Sounds like the timeline is all over the place - some people get resolved in weeks, others are waiting 6+ months. At least I know it's not just me going through this nightmare. I did pull my wage and income transcript like some of you suggested and found a small discrepancy with one of my 1099s (bank reported $47 in interest that I missed). Probably not worth the months of delays but here we are. Hoping we all get our refunds soon! This whole system is beyond frustrating. 😤

0 coins

Oh wow, sounds like we're in almost identical situations! I filed around the same time and just spotted my 420 code this week too. The $47 interest discrepancy you found is probably exactly the kind of thing that triggers these reviews - such a small amount but apparently enough to throw a wrench in the whole process. It's honestly both frustrating and somewhat comforting to see how many people are dealing with this. The randomness of the timelines is what gets me - like how does someone get resolved in 3 weeks while others wait 6+ months for the same type of issue? I'm definitely going to pull my wage and income transcript after reading your experience and others here. Better to know what I'm dealing with upfront rather than just sitting in limbo wondering. Thanks for sharing your timeline - helps to know what to potentially expect even if the wait times are all over the map! Fingers crossed we both see some movement soon. This whole thing is such a stressful waiting game! 🤞

0 coins

I'm dealing with the exact same situation right now! Got my 420 code about 6 weeks ago and still waiting. Filed in February and was really counting on that refund for some unexpected medical bills that came up. After reading through everyone's experiences here, I pulled my wage and income transcript like several people suggested. Found a small 1099-INT that I completely forgot about from a savings account I barely use - only $23 but apparently enough to trigger a review. It's crazy how such a tiny oversight can cause months of delays. The inconsistency in timelines is what's really getting to me. Some people here got resolved in weeks while others are waiting 6+ months for similar issues. There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to it. I'm going to try calling again next week, though based on what everyone's saying about wait times and getting disconnected, I'm not holding my breath. Might also look into that Taxpayer Advocate Service someone mentioned if this drags on much longer. Thanks to everyone sharing their timelines and experiences - it really helps to know we're not alone in this mess! Hoping we all see some movement on our transcripts soon. 🤞

0 coins

I'm in such a similar boat! Filed in early March and just discovered my 420 code yesterday when I finally thought to check my transcript. The $23 1099-INT issue you found is probably exactly what's happening to me too - I had a few small savings accounts that I completely forgot might have earned interest. It's honestly mind-blowing how a missing $23 can tie up thousands of dollars for months. Like, just take it out of my refund and call it a day! But no, apparently we need to go through this whole drawn-out review process instead. The timeline randomness is what's killing me too. Reading through this thread, it seems like there's zero consistency - people with identical situations getting completely different wait times. Makes me wonder if it just depends on which IRS office gets your case or how backed up they are. I'm definitely going to pull my wage and income transcript this weekend to see what I missed. Better to know what I'm dealing with than just sit here wondering. Thanks for sharing your experience - it's weirdly comforting to know so many of us are in the same frustrating situation right now! Hoping we all get some good news on our transcripts soon! 🤞

I'm dealing with a 420 code too! Filed in late February and just noticed it appeared on my transcript about 3 weeks ago. Still no letter yet but WMR keeps saying "still processing" which is driving me nuts. Reading through everyone's experiences here is both helpful and nerve-wracking - sounds like the timeline is completely unpredictable. Some people get resolved in a month, others are waiting 6+ months for what seems like similar issues. I'm definitely going to pull my wage and income transcript this weekend like so many of you suggested. I have a feeling I might have missed some small 1099 or interest income that's causing the holdup. It's crazy how a tiny oversight can delay everything for months! The lack of communication from the IRS is the worst part. At least if they told us specifically what they were reviewing, we could address it faster instead of just sitting in limbo wondering. Thanks to everyone for sharing their timelines and tips - it really helps to know we're all in this together. Fingers crossed we all see some movement soon! 🤞

0 coins

I'm in basically the same exact situation! Filed in late February too and just spotted my 420 code a couple weeks ago. The "still processing" message on WMR while seeing that code on the transcript is so frustrating - like at least give us some indication of what's actually happening! You're absolutely right about pulling that wage and income transcript. After reading through everyone's experiences here, it seems like 90% of these 420 codes are triggered by missing 1099s or small discrepancies that we just forgot about. Better to know what we're dealing with upfront rather than just guessing. The timeline uncertainty is what's really getting to me too. It's wild how someone can get resolved in 3 weeks while another person with seemingly the same issue waits 6+ months. Makes no sense at all. At least we found this thread though! It's oddly comforting to see so many people going through the exact same thing. Definitely makes the waiting feel less isolating. Hopefully we all start seeing some positive movement on our transcripts soon! 🤞

Based on everyone's advice here, I'm definitely going to pull my wage and income transcript this weekend to look for any discrepancies. Seems like most of these 420 codes are triggered by missing 1099s or small reporting errors that we just overlooked. The timeline inconsistency is what's really frustrating - reading through all these experiences, it seems completely random whether you wait 3 weeks or 6+ months for resolution. Makes it impossible to plan or know what to expect. I was also counting on this refund for home repairs, so I totally feel your pain on that front. Fingers crossed we both see some movement on our transcripts soon. Thanks for starting this thread - it's incredibly helpful to see everyone's real experiences instead of just the vague official IRS timelines! 🤞

Welcome to the 420 waiting club! 😅 I just joined recently too after finding my code last week. Filed in March as well, so we're on pretty similar timelines. The relief of finding this thread is real - I was starting to think something was seriously wrong with my return until I saw how common this actually is. It's wild how the IRS doesn't really explain what's happening, just leaves us to figure it out ourselves. Definitely pull that wage and income transcript! So many people here found their answers there - missed 1099s, employer reporting errors, tiny interest amounts we forgot about. Even if it's something small, at least you'll know what you're dealing with instead of just wondering. The timeline randomness is the most frustrating part. Like how does one person get resolved in 3 weeks while someone else waits half a year for basically the same issue? Makes zero sense. Hope your home repairs can wait a bit longer! Seems like most people eventually get their refunds, it's just a matter of when. Keeping my fingers crossed we both see some good news on our transcripts soon! 🤞

I'm going through the exact same thing right now! Filed in early March 2024 and just noticed the 420 code appeared on my transcript a few days ago. Like you, I was really counting on that refund money - in my case for some unexpected car repairs. After reading through all these experiences, I'm definitely going to pull my wage and income transcript this weekend to look for any discrepancies. It sounds like most of these 420 codes are triggered by missing 1099s or small reporting errors that we just overlooked during filing. What's really frustrating is how unpredictable the timeline seems to be. Some people here got resolved in just a few weeks while others are waiting 6+ months for what appears to be similar issues. Makes it impossible to know what to expect or plan around. The lack of clear communication from the IRS doesn't help either - just that vague "we're reviewing your return" message while we're left guessing what's actually wrong. At least finding this thread helps knowing we're not alone in this waiting game. Hopefully we both see some positive movement on our transcripts soon! Thanks for starting this discussion - it's really helpful to see everyone's real timelines and experiences. 🤞

I'm in such a similar situation! Filed around the same time and just found my 420 code this week too. The car repair timing couldn't be worse - I know exactly how frustrating it is when you're counting on that money for necessary expenses. After reading through everyone's experiences here, pulling that wage and income transcript seems like the best first step. So many people found their answers there - usually something small like a missing 1099-INT or employer reporting discrepancy that we just didn't catch during filing. The timeline unpredictability is what's really getting to me. It's crazy how there's no consistency at all - someone gets resolved in 3 weeks while another person waits half a year for basically the same type of issue. Makes you wonder if it just depends on which office processes your case or how backed up they are. At least we found this community though! It's been so helpful seeing everyone's real experiences instead of just those vague IRS timelines. Definitely makes the waiting feel less isolating when you realize how common this actually is. Filed 1/29 got the 60 day letter 3/10 and called every month no updated no issues is what I was told then 9/18 got the 424 code

0 coins

Wow, that's such a long journey from January to September! The 424 code after waiting through a 420 review for so many months must be both frustrating and hopefully a sign that things are finally moving. I'm curious - when you called monthly and they said "no issues," did they ever give you any indication of what was actually being reviewed? It's so frustrating how they can keep people in limbo for 8+ months with basically no real information. The fact that you got the 424 code now suggests they've made some kind of adjustment to your return. Hopefully that means you're finally at the end of this nightmare and will see a refund date soon! Your timeline definitely shows how unpredictable this whole process can be. Some people here got resolved in weeks while you've been waiting since January. The system really needs to be more transparent about what's happening and realistic about timeframes. Fingers crossed the 424 code means good news is coming your way soon! 🤞

@Holly Lascelles now in November I still have not heard anything from them and my audot status shows 2024 but nothing sent out and atill havw the 420 code

1 coin

Oh no, the 424 code after all that waiting! That's so frustrating - you've been dealing with this since January. For others who might not know, code 424 usually means they've made an adjustment to your return and are calculating interest on any refund delay. Did they send you any correspondence explaining what the adjustment was for? Sometimes the 424 appears when they've resolved whatever triggered the original 420 review but made changes to your refund amount. After waiting this long, you might want to contact the Taxpayer Advocate Service if you haven't already. Getting bounced around for 8+ months with no clear answers definitely seems like a case where they could help push things along. Keep us posted on what happens next! Your timeline is definitely on the longer side of what people are reporting here, but hopefully the 424 code means they're finally wrapping things up.

Welcome to the 420 club! 😅 I'm pretty new to this situation too - just discovered my code a couple weeks ago after filing in February. It's definitely reassuring to see how many people are going through the same thing, even though the wait is incredibly frustrating. Pulling that wage and income transcript is such good advice based on what everyone's shared here. I did it last week and found a small 1099-B from some stock sale I completely forgot about. Nothing major, but apparently enough to trigger their review process. At least now I know what I'm dealing with instead of just guessing. The timeline randomness is the most maddening part! Like how does the IRS decide who gets processed in 3 weeks versus 6 months? There's got to be some rhyme or reason to it, but from the outside it looks completely arbitrary. Hope your home improvements can wait a bit longer! From what I'm seeing here, most people do eventually get their refunds - it's just a matter of when. Keeping my fingers crossed we all start seeing some positive movement soon! 🤞

I'm in the exact same boat! Filed in March 2024 and just discovered the dreaded 420 code on my transcript yesterday. WMR is still stuck on "processing" with no additional info. Like you, I was really counting on this refund - mine is for some urgent HVAC repairs before winter hits. After reading through all these experiences, I'm amazed at how common this actually is. The timeline inconsistency is what's driving me nuts - some people get resolved in weeks while others wait 6+ months for what seems like identical issues. There's zero predictability to it. I'm definitely going to pull my wage and income transcript this weekend like everyone's suggesting. Based on what I'm reading here, it's probably some tiny 1099 I forgot about or a small employer reporting discrepancy. It's insane how a $20 interest income oversight can tie up thousands of dollars for months. The lack of communication from the IRS is the worst part. Just tell us what you're looking for so we can fix it! Instead we're left playing this guessing game while our money sits in limbo. Thanks for starting this thread - it's been incredibly helpful seeing everyone's real timelines and experiences. At least we know we're not alone in this nightmare! I'm dealing with the exact same situation! Filed in March and just found my 420 code last week. The HVAC repair timing is brutal - I know how stressful it is when you need that money for something urgent like that. You're so right about the timeline randomness being the most frustrating part. I've been reading through everyone's experiences here and it really does seem completely arbitrary whether you wait 3 weeks or 6+ months. Makes you wonder what factors actually determine the processing speed. Definitely pull that wage and income transcript ASAP! I did mine over the weekend and found a tiny 1099-MISC from some freelance work I'd forgotten about - only $89 but apparently enough to trigger their whole review process. At least now I understand what's happening instead of just sitting here wondering. The communication blackout from the IRS is absolutely maddening. Like you said, just tell us what the issue is so we can address it! Instead we get these vague "under review" messages while our money disappears into the void. Hope your HVAC situation works out and winter holds off a bit longer! This thread has been such a lifesaver for feeling less alone in this mess.
