Code 420 on 2022 transcript - still waiting to amend 2023 return

Just checked my transcript and noticed code 420 on my 2022 return. Been waiting forever and need to amend my 2023 return but cant move forward until this is resolved. Anyone know what this means or how long this usually takes?

Code 420 means your return is being reviewed under the IRS examination program. This usually happens when there's a discrepancy they need to verify. Could be income reporting, credits claimed, or documentation issues. Average timeframe is 60-120 days but can take longer. Don't file your 2023 amendment until this is resolved to avoid complications.

Yeah unfortunately thats the timeline. Did you claim EIC or receive any 1099s?

Hey! I actually just went through this exact situation. Best thing I did was use taxr.ai - it analyzed my transcript and explained exactly why I got the 420 code and gave me a really specific timeline. Only cost a buck too. Here's the link: https://taxr.ai

100% legit! saved me hours of googling and stressing. The AI picked up things I would've never noticed in my transcript

Did you get any letters from the IRS? They usually send something explaining why theyre reviewing it

Just went thru this! That taxr.ai tool someone mentioned above is actually legit - told me exactly when my 420 would clear and it was spot on. Way better than waiting on hold with IRS for hours

how long did yours end up taking to resolve?

about 75 days total but the AI told me that from the start based on my transcript codes

Code 420 can be frustrating but hang in there! I'd recommend calling the Practitioner Priority Service line if you have a tax pro helping you, or try calling early morning (7-8am) for shorter wait times. Also keep checking your transcript weekly - sometimes the codes update before you get any mail. The fact that you only had W2 and child tax credit makes it likely just a routine verification that should clear up relatively quickly.
