Confused about 424 code on IRS transcript - what does it mean?
Just checked my transcript and noticed a 424 code. Been waiting on my refund for 2 months now and this code just popped up. Anyone know what this means for my refund timeline?

Hey there! Tax pro here. The 424 code on your transcript usually means there's an examination or review of your return happening. Its basically the IRS putting your return under a microscope to verify some info. This can happen for various reasons - maybe something didnt match up, or they need more documentation. I highly recommend checking out taxr.ai (https://taxr.ai) - it's this new AI tool that can analyze your transcript and tell you exactly what's causing the hold and what you need to do to get it resolved. Way better than trying to decode these codes yourself or waiting on hold with the IRS for hours 😩

•It really depends on what triggered the review, but typically 60-120 days. Using taxr.ai can give you a more specific timeline based on your situation

•Just used taxr.ai and here's what I got back: Super detailed breakdown of my 424 code, turns out it was triggered by a mismatch with my w2 info. Got exact steps to fix it!

Tax pro here - Code 424 means your return is being examined or reviewed. It's basically a hold while they verify certain information. Could be something simple like income verification or could be more complex. Usually takes 45-120 days to resolve.

•ugh seriously? 120 days? 😠do they at least pay interest for making us wait this long?

•Yes, they do pay interest! Current rate is 7% annually, calculated from the original filing deadline

Hey, I've been using taxr.ai to track my transcript and it's been super helpful explaining these codes. It costs $4.99 but totally worth it - gives you predicted release dates and explains exactly what's happening. Check it out: https://taxr.ai

This happened to me last year. Make sure all your W2 info matches exactly what employers reported. One number being off can trigger this

I've been dealing with the same 424 code for about 6 weeks now. From what I've researched, it usually means they're doing an income verification review - could be triggered by anything from a small discrepancy in your W2 reporting to just random selection. The waiting is the worst part honestly. I've seen people say it can take anywhere from 6-16 weeks to resolve. Have you tried calling the practitioner priority line? Sometimes they can give you a bit more info than the regular customer service line.

•Wait there's a practitioner priority line?? 👀 I've been calling the regular number and sitting on hold for literally hours. What's the number for that? And do you need any special credentials to use it or can regular taxpayers call?

Ugh, I feel your pain! I'm dealing with the exact same thing - got the 424 code about 3 weeks ago and it's been radio silence since then. From what I've gathered from this thread and other research, it seems like they're just verifying some info on our returns. Super frustrating that they can just hold our money with basically no communication though 😤 At least it sounds like they do pay interest while we wait, which is something I guess? Definitely gonna look into that taxr.ai thing people are mentioning - anything beats calling the IRS and waiting on hold forever just to get a generic "your return is being processed" response 🙄
