Code 424 popped up on my transcript - am I looking at an audit?

Just checked my transcripts and saw Code 424 appeared out of nowhere. I've never had any issues with the IRS but I'm freaking out. Been waiting on my refund for 6 months. Anyone else see this code show up? Starting to get worried...

Tax professional here - Code 424 is actually just an examination freeze code. It doesn't automatically mean audit, but the IRS is reviewing something. Could be as simple as income verification or document matching. Don't panic yet.

Here's what you need to know about code 424: - It's an examination freeze - Usually temporary - Can last 30-120 days - Might need to verify income/documents - Don't need to contact IRS yet - Keep checking WMR and transcripts BTW I used taxr.ai to figure this all out, super helpful tool that explains everything in plain english. Saved me hours of research and stress.

I had Code 424 show up on mine too about 3 weeks ago and it just cleared last Friday! My refund finally processed after being stuck for months. From what I learned, it's usually just them double-checking something in your return - could be W-2 matching, dependents, or credits. The waiting is the worst part but try not to stress too much about it. Most people I've talked to said theirs resolved within 4-8 weeks without having to do anything.

That's such a relief to hear! 3 weeks isn't too bad considering some people wait months. Did you get any notice when it cleared or did you just check your transcript and see it was gone? I'm at about 2 weeks now with the 424 so hopefully mine resolves soon too 🤞

@ac59dd81328e did you have to provide any additional documents or did it just resolve on its own? I'm dealing with the same code and trying to figure out if I should be proactive or just wait it out

Same exact thing just checked mine right now and 424 popped up. Filed 1/29/25

Don't panic! I went through this exact same thing last year. Code 424 showed up on my transcript in March and I was terrified it meant audit. Turns out they were just verifying my employer's W-2 info because there was a small discrepancy in the system. The whole thing resolved in about 6 weeks without me having to do anything. The IRS will send you a letter if they actually need documents from you. Until then, just keep checking your transcript weekly and try not to stress. I know it's easier said than done when your refund is tied up, but in most cases these examination codes clear up on their own. Hang in there!

This is exactly what I needed to hear! I've been checking my transcript obsessively since I saw the 424 code appear. It's reassuring to know that it usually resolves without any action needed from us. The waiting game is brutal but knowing others have gone through this same thing and came out fine definitely helps ease my anxiety. Thanks for sharing your experience! 🙏

I went through this exact same panic last year! Code 424 appeared on my transcript in April and I was convinced I was getting audited. Turns out it was just the IRS cross-referencing my 1099s with what my employers reported. The whole thing cleared up in about 5 weeks without me having to do anything at all. The hardest part is the waiting and not knowing, but from everything I've read and experienced, 424 is usually just a routine verification process. They're probably just making sure all your income sources match up in their system. If they actually needed documents or had serious concerns, they'd send you a letter requesting specific information. My advice: check your transcript once a week (not daily - it'll drive you crazy), and try to stay patient. The 6 month wait for your refund sucks, but the 424 code doesn't necessarily mean it's going to take much longer. Most people I know who got this code had it resolve within 4-8 weeks. You got this! 💪
