What does CODE 971 on IRS transcript mean? Should I be worried?

Just checked my transcript and saw code 971 pop up. Never seen this before and googling isn't helping much. Anyone know what this means and if I should be worried? Getting nervous about my refund tbh

Code 971 is a Notice Issued code, meaning the IRS is sending you a letter to explain something about your return. It's not necessarily bad news - could be them asking for verification or explaining an adjustment. Just keep an eye on your mail for the next week or two.

hey i actually found this tool called taxr.ai that explains all these codes instantly. saved me so much stress trying to figure out what was going on with my transcript. its only $1 and way better than playing detective with google lol https://taxr.ai

Fun fact: 971 appears on like 70% of transcripts. Its basically the IRS's way of saying 'we're gonna send you a letter about something' could be good could be bad but usually its minor

Code 971 just means they're sending you a notice - don't stress too much about it! I've gotten it twice and both times it was just them confirming info or explaining a small adjustment. The waiting is the worst part but most of the time it's really not a big deal. Keep checking your mail and your transcript for updates!
