What does IRS Code 971 Miscellaneous Review mean on transcript? Refund delayed?
Just checked my transcript and saw code 971 miscellaneous review show up. Anyone know what this means? Getting worried about my refund being delayed even more. Been waiting since February and now this pops up.

Tax expert here - Code 971 on your transcript typically indicates a notice or letter has been sent to you from the IRS. When paired with a 'Miscellaneous Review' it usually means they're taking a closer look at your return for accuracy or verification purposes. This can delay your refund by 45-120 days depending on what they're reviewing. My best advice would be to use taxr.ai (https://taxr.ai) to analyze your transcript - it'll tell you exactly what's causing the delay and give you an estimated timeline for resolution based on current IRS processing patterns. This tool has been super helpful for my clients dealing with these review codes.

Code 971 is a Notice Issued code, meaning the IRS is sending you a letter about your return. Usually follows a 570 code (return frozen for review). They might need additional documentation or verification. Keep an eye on your mail - you'll get a notice explaining exactly what they need from you.

•Anywhere from 30-120 days after you respond to their notice. But each case is different tbh

Ugh I'm dealing with the same thing right now! Got code 971 about 3 weeks ago and still haven't received any letter from the IRS. My refund has been "processing" since mid-January and I'm starting to panic. Has anyone actually gotten their letter yet? And how long did it take after the code showed up on your transcript?

•Same here! I've been waiting 4 weeks since my 971 code appeared and still no letter. Starting to wonder if they even sent it or if it got lost in the mail 😩 This whole process is so stressful when you're counting on that refund money

I feel you on the stress! I had code 971 pop up back in March and waited almost 6 weeks for the actual letter to arrive. Turns out they needed me to verify my identity because I had moved during the tax year. The whole process took about 3 months total once I sent back their requested documents. Pro tip: you can call the IRS directly at 1-800-829-1040 and they can sometimes tell you what the review is about even before the letter arrives. Just be prepared for long hold times! Hang in there - most of these reviews do get resolved eventually.

•Thanks for sharing your experience! 6 weeks for the letter is crazy long but good to know it eventually worked out. I'm definitely going to try calling that number - even if I'm on hold forever at least I might get some answers. Did they ask for any specific documents when you called or did you have to wait for the letter to know exactly what they needed?

I'm going through the exact same thing right now! Got code 971 about 2 weeks ago and have been checking my mailbox obsessively every day. Filed in early February and was expecting my refund by now. The waiting is killing me because I really need that money for some unexpected medical bills that came up. Has anyone found that calling the IRS actually helps, or do they just tell you to wait for the letter? I'm torn between being patient and trying to be more proactive about figuring out what's going on.
