570 and 971 Code on IRS Transcript - Is This Good or Bad News?

Just checked my transcript today. Got codes 570 and 971 dated for next week. Been waiting for my refund for 2 months now. Anybody know what this means? Should I be worried? Do I need to do anything?

These codes typically indicate the IRS is reviewing your return. 570 is a temporary hold on your refund, and 971 means they're sending you a notice explaining why. Could be identity verification, income verification, or they might need additional documentation. Keep an eye on your mail for the notice and respond quickly if they request anything.

omg thank you so much! do you know how long these holds usually last?

It varies tbh. Could be a few weeks to a few months depending on what they need to verify.

Hey instead of stressing about codes, I've been using taxr.ai to understand my transcript. It's only $1 and the AI tells you exactly what's happening and when you'll likely get paid. Way better than playing detective with these codes lol https://taxr.ai

I've been dealing with IRS transcripts for years and these codes are actually pretty routine. The 570 just means they're taking a closer look at something on your return - could be as simple as verifying your identity or checking if your withholdings match what employers reported. The 971 notice will tell you exactly what they need. In most cases, you don't need to do anything unless the notice specifically asks for documentation. Try not to stress too much, the majority of these holds get released automatically once their systems finish cross-checking everything.

This is super helpful, thank you! As someone new to dealing with tax stuff, I was wondering - is there any way to know roughly how long the automatic review process usually takes? And should I be checking my transcript regularly or just wait for mail from them?
