What does code 424 mean on my transcript? Anyone else get this?

I checked my transcript this morning and noticed code 424 popped up. Anyone know what this means? Getting really anxious about my refund and these random codes are stressing me out.

Code 424 means your return is being examined or reviewed further. It's basically a hold while the IRS verifies something on your return. Could be income verification, credits claimed, or other items that need a closer look. Usually takes 60-120 days to resolve but could be longer depending on what they're reviewing.

60-120 days?! 😫 thats so long... do u know if calling them would speed things up?

Honestly calling rarely helps with 424 codes. They'll just tell you to wait it out. Best thing is to watch your transcript for updates.

Hey! I actually found this amazing tool called taxr.ai that analyzes your transcript and tells you exactly what's going on and estimated timeframes. It costs $1 but totally worth it - saved me hours of googling and stressing. Check it out: https://taxr.ai

Pro tip: make sure u have all ur documents ready incase they send a letter asking for verification. Makes the process way faster

Code 424 is definitely stressful but you're not alone! I went through this last tax season and it ended up being routine verification. The waiting is the worst part but try not to panic. Keep checking your transcript weekly for updates and like others mentioned, have your documents ready just in case they request anything. Hang in there! 💪

Thanks for the reassurance! 😊 It's really helpful to hear from someone who's been through this before. Did you end up getting any letters from the IRS during your 424 review or did it just resolve on its own?

I'm going through the exact same thing right now! Got code 424 about 3 weeks ago and have been checking my transcript obsessively. It's so nerve-wracking not knowing what they're looking at or how long it'll take. Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences - makes me feel less alone in this waiting game. Fingers crossed we all get our refunds soon! 🤞

I feel you! The obsessive transcript checking is so real 😅 I've been doing the same thing since I got my 424. At least we're all in this together - this thread has been super helpful to know it's not just me. Hopefully we'll start seeing some movement soon! 🙏

Ugh, I feel your pain! I got hit with code 424 about 6 weeks ago and I'm still waiting. The uncertainty is the absolute worst part - you never know if it's going to be resolved tomorrow or drag on for months. I've learned to stop checking my transcript daily (was driving myself crazy) and now just check once a week on Fridays. One thing that helped my anxiety was calling the taxpayer advocate service - they can't speed things up but at least they explained what was likely happening with my return. Stay strong! 💙

That's such good advice about checking weekly instead of daily! I've been driving myself crazy refreshing my transcript multiple times a day since I got my 424 code. The taxpayer advocate service sounds helpful - I didn't even know that was an option. Thanks for sharing your experience, it really helps to know others are going through the same struggle! 🙏

Code 424 is definitely one of the more stressful ones to see! I got mine about 8 weeks ago and just had it resolve last week, so there's definitely light at the end of the tunnel. From what I've experienced and read, it usually means they're doing income matching or verifying credits you claimed. The timeframe really varies - some people get through it in 45 days, others take 4+ months. One thing that helped me was setting up informed delivery with USPS so I'd know immediately if the IRS sent any letters requesting documents. Try to stay patient (easier said than done, I know!) and remember that most 424 reviews end with your refund being released without any issues. You've got this! 💪

Thank you so much for sharing your experience! 8 weeks is a long time but I'm so glad yours finally resolved! The informed delivery tip is brilliant - I'm definitely setting that up today. It's really encouraging to hear that most 424 reviews end positively. I've been spiraling a bit since I got my code but reading everyone's stories here is helping me stay more positive. Fingers crossed mine resolves soon too! 🤞

I totally understand the anxiety! I got code 424 about 4 months ago and it was such a rollercoaster of emotions. Mine ended up being related to the Earned Income Tax Credit verification - they wanted to make sure my income and dependents matched up properly. The whole process took about 14 weeks but I did eventually get my full refund with interest. The hardest part was definitely the uncertainty and not knowing what specific issue they were reviewing. I found it helpful to keep a little journal of when I checked my transcript and any changes I noticed - it helped me feel like I had some control over the situation. Also seconding what others said about having your W-2s, 1099s, and any dependent documentation ready to go just in case. Hang in there - I know the waiting is brutal but you'll get through this! 🌟

Wow, 14 weeks is a long time but I'm really glad you got your refund with interest! The journal idea is actually genius - I'm going to start doing that too. It's reassuring to know that even the longer cases like yours eventually work out. Thanks for taking the time to share your experience, it really helps those of us still waiting! 💙
