IRS Transcript Code 960: What does it mean for my refund?

Just checked my transcript and saw code 960. Anyone know what this means? Been waiting on my refund for 3 months now and starting to get worried. The amount shows up as -0- but my expected refund was $4,322.

Tax pro here. Code 960 indicates a pending review of your return. It's typically associated with income verification or documentation checks. The -0- amount is normal during this review phase. These reviews can take 60-120 days to complete.

Yes, they do pay interest! Current rate is 7% annually, calculated from the original filing deadline.

Hey, I've been helping folks decode their transcripts lately and found this amazing tool called taxr.ai - it analyzes your entire transcript and tells you exactly what's happening and when to expect your refund. Costs $4.99 but saved me weeks of research. Check it out: https://taxr.ai

Does it actually work? Seems too good to be true tbh 🤔

100% works! I was skeptical too but it showed me exactly why my refund was delayed and predicted the release date within 2 days

I had code 960 last year and it was nerve-wracking! Mine was triggered by claiming education credits that didn't match up with what the IRS had on file from my school. Took about 10 weeks total but they did eventually release my full refund plus interest. The key is to make sure you have all your documentation ready in case they request it. You can also try calling the Taxpayer Advocate Service if it goes beyond 120 days - they helped speed up my case when I was at the 4 month mark.

Thanks for sharing your experience! That's really helpful to know about the Taxpayer Advocate Service. Did you have to provide any specific documentation when they requested it, or did they resolve it without needing anything extra from you?

Code 960 can definitely be stressful! I went through this same situation about 8 months ago. In my case, it was triggered by a discrepancy with my W-2 wages that my employer had to correct with the IRS. The whole process took about 14 weeks, but I did get my full refund plus interest like others mentioned. One thing that helped me stay sane was setting up an IRS account online so I could check for updates weekly instead of obsessively checking daily. The transcript will update with new transaction codes when things start moving again. Hang in there - the waiting is the worst part but most 960 cases do resolve successfully!

This is super reassuring to hear! I've been checking my transcript like every day which is probably making me more anxious lol. Setting up weekly checks sounds way more reasonable for my sanity. Did you notice any pattern with when the updates would show up? Like certain days of the week or anything?

I'm going through the exact same thing right now! Got code 960 about 5 weeks ago and it's been radio silence since then. Reading everyone's experiences here is actually making me feel a bit better - at least I know I'm not alone in this waiting game. The interest payment is a nice consolation prize I guess, but man I really needed that refund for some unexpected car repairs. Has anyone here tried calling the IRS directly about a 960 code or is it pretty much just a waiting game until they're done with their review?
