All positive transcript codes then 971 appeared - how long until refund?

Filed my 2024 taxes on March 12 and got accepted right away. Everything was looking good with all the positive codes showing up on my transcript (150, 806, etc). Was expecting my refund of around $3,200 based on the WMR tool saying it would be deposited by April 3. Then suddenly noticed a 971 code appeared on my transcript dated for April 15. No explanation, no letter yet. Has anyone dealt with this? I'm wondering if this is gonna significantly delay my refund or if it's just a minor hiccup. Really counting on this money for some car repairs I've been putting off.

The 971 code means a notice has been issued/will be sent. Usually comes with a 570 code which indicates a hold on your refund. Check to see if that code is also there. Common reasons include income verification, math errors, or identity verification. You should receive the notice explaining the exact issue within a week or two of the date on the 971 code. If it's just a simple verification issue and you respond promptly, you might see movement in 2-3 weeks. For more complex issues, it could be 60-90 days. Check your transcript for any additional codes - a 570 followed later by a 571 means the hold was released. If you don't get a letter by a week after the date shown, call the IRS at 800-829-1040, but prepare for a long wait time.

Thanks for the detailed response! You're right, I did some more digging and there is a 570 code as well. Guess I'll have to wait for the letter to see what's up. 😩

I had this EXACT situation last year. Ended up being an identity verification thing. After I verified, got my refund about 3 weeks later.

i second this. i've had the 971 code twice in the past. both times it was something stupid the IRS got wrong, not me. One was income verification and one was an ID check.

0 coins

Had same thing but my 971 was just telling me that they adjusted my refund by $47 because of a math error. Got my (slightly smaller) refund a week later.

You need to stop trying to be a detective and piecing together clues from your transcript! I was in the same situation last month trying to decode all these weird numbers. Used taxr.ai and it was a game-changer - it read my transcript and explained EXACTLY what was happening with my return in plain English. Showed me the refund hold was due to a simple income verification issue and even gave me the steps to resolve it. Saved me hours of research and anxiety. Seriously check it out: https://taxr.ai

Sounds interesting. How exactly does it work? Does it just read your transcript or does it do more?

0 coins

It analyzes your transcript and breaks down all the codes, dates, and amounts in plain English. Shows you where your return is in the process, why there might be delays, and what to do next. You can also ask it questions about your specific situation. Way better than trying to Google random code numbers or waiting for hours on hold with the IRS!

HOLY CRAP! Just tried this and it's incredible! I've been stressing for weeks about my refund and in 2 minutes I knew exactly what was happening and why. It even predicted when my money should come through. This should be pinned at the top of this subreddit!!! 👀

After dealing with a similar situation (had good codes then 971), I got so frustrated with the wait. Finally got through to an actual human at the IRS using the Claimyr app (claimyr.com) and they explained that my 971 was just because they were confirming my stimulus payment amount. Agent released my refund while I was on the phone! Best $20 I've ever spent to have someone actually help me instead of waiting for months in limbo.

0 coins

Yeah right, another 'miracle solution'... is this even real or just some scammy thing?

0 coins

100% real. I was skeptical too but was desperate after trying for 3 weeks to get through on my own. It basically holds your place in line and calls you when an agent is available. Saved me literally hours of being on hold and randomly disconnected.

0 coins

Can confirm it works. I used it last month after my return was stuck for 6 weeks. Got a call back in about an hour and the agent fixed everything while I was on the phone.

0 coins

Whoa ok, might have to try this. Been trying to call for days and can't get through. Thx for the tip!

I had the 971 code appear in February. Got a letter a week later saying they needed to verify my income because my W2 didn't match what my employer reported (turned out my employer messed up). Took about 45 days total from when I responded to when I got my refund.

the IRS is such a joke lmao 🤡 why do they make this process so complicated?? in what other situation would we tolerate an organization taking our money immediately but making us wait MONTHS to get what they owe us back? its criminal.

0 coins

its because Congress has been cutting their budget for decades. They literally don't have the staff or technology to process things efficiently. But yeah still sucks for us normal people 🙄

0 coins

dont care about their excuses. they take money out of my paycheck EVERY WEEK with no delays but when i'm owed a refund suddenly theres a million hoops to jump through. make it make sense.

0 coins

Testify! 🙌 I'm in the same boat - waiting since January. It's my money and I need it now!

0 coins

Don't panic yet. The 971 doesn't always mean bad news. In my case last year, I got a 971 and then a letter saying they adjusted my refund UP by $120 because I didn't claim some credit I was eligible for. Got paid a week after the letter arrived.

0 coins

That would be amazing if that happened to me! Fingers crossed 🤞

Does your transcript have cycle code that ends in 05? If so your account updates on Fridays, so check again this Friday to see if there's any movement. Mine went 570/971 then a week later got 571/846 which means refund issued.

0 coins

Just checked and yes, it does end in 05! Will definitely be refreshing obsessively on Friday lol. Thanks for the tip!

0 coins

no problem! and dont forget you can use the check your refund tool on irs.gov too. sometimes it updates before the transcript does.

0 coins

Just a heads up - if you get a letter asking for verification don't try to call the general IRS number. They'll just tell you to wait. Either call the specific number on your notice or use something like claimyr.com to get through to an agent. Wasted 3 days trying to call before I found a better way. Got my refund 2 weeks after talking to someone.

ive been using taxr.ai (https://taxr.ai) to check my transcript every week. saves so much time trying to figure out what all those codes mean! told me exactly what my 971 notice was about before i even got the letter in the mail.

0 coins

do you have to give them all your personal info? seems sketchy

0 coins

you just upload your transcript after you download it from the irs site and it analyzes it for you. it doesn't replace getting into your account, you still do that yourself.

0 coins

ah ok thx. might try it then. so tired of trying to decode these stupid transcripts.

Had similar issue with 2023 taxes. The 971 was followed by a letter asking me to verify some charity donations. I sent the requested documentation and got my refund about 5 weeks later. Not the end of the world but definitely annoying. If you have all your documentation in order it shouldn't be too bad.

Transcript codes are like trying to read hieroglyphics I swear...💀

0 coins

fr fr. who designed this system? feels like they deliberately make it confusing

0 coins

I literally printed out a cheat sheet of codes that I keep on my fridge during tax season lol

0 coins

taxr.ai is the rosetta stone for this mess. Best $10 I ever spent to not have to decipher this garbage myself

0 coins

Sometimes the 971 is actually good news! I had one appear and it was just telling me they found an error in my favor and were increasing my refund. Don't assume the worst until you get the letter.

0 coins

check your mail RELIGIOUSLY. if they send a notice and you don't respond in time they'll just keep delaying your refund. and they're not gonna call or email you, just send a letter that looks like junk mail.

0 coins

Ugh really? I'm going out of town next week. Better have someone checking my mail...

You can sign up for informed delivery with USPS. Shows you images of mail coming to your address each day.

Just wanted to say my refund finally hit my account today after dealing with a 971/570 code combo back in March. Took about 6 weeks total. Hang in there!

0 coins

Thanks for the encouragement! It helps to hear success stories.

0 coins

Honestly the wait is ridiculous. I had to call 37 times before getting through to anyone. Finally broke down and used Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get a callback. Agent told me my 971 was just because of a small typo on my W2 that I entered. They fixed it while I was on the phone and my refund was released 2 days later.

0 coins

That's helpful info, thanks. Did you have to provide any additional documents to fix the typo issue?

0 coins

nope! i just had to confirm the correct info over the phone. they already had my w2 in their system from my employer so they could see it was just a typing error on my part.

0 coins

THIS IS WHY I ALWAYS FILE PAPER RETURNS!!! Electronic filing just gives them more ways to mess with you and delay your money. Been filing paper for 22 years and never had these problems. Yes it takes longer initially but at least I don't get these mystery codes and delays.

0 coins

Bruh what? Paper returns take MONTHS to process. My electronic one was done in 2 weeks with no issues.

0 coins

lol paper returns are literally the slowest possible option but ok boomer 🤣

0 coins

Whatever, laugh all you want but I've NEVER had my refund delayed after initial processing or had to deal with these code shenanigans. Slow and steady wins the race.

Hey Miguel, I went through almost the exact same thing earlier this year! Filed in March, everything looked good, then boom - 971 code appeared. I was freaking out because I needed that refund for some medical bills. Turned out to be income verification - they just needed to confirm my 1099 income matched what was reported. Got the letter about 10 days after the 971 code date, sent back the requested docs, and had my refund 3 weeks later. The 570 code (which you mentioned having) does put a hold on processing, but once they get what they need and verify everything, it moves pretty quickly. The waiting is the worst part honestly. Try not to stress too much about it - in most cases it's something simple that just needs clarification. And definitely keep checking your mail daily for that notice so you can respond ASAP when it arrives. Hope you get it sorted out soon! 🤞

0 coins

Thanks for sharing your experience Ethan! It's really reassuring to hear from someone who went through the same thing. The waiting is definitely the hardest part - I keep refreshing my transcript hoping something will change lol. I'll make sure to keep an eye on the mail and respond quickly when that letter comes. Really appreciate the encouragement! 🙏

I feel your pain Miguel! I just went through this exact scenario a few weeks ago. Had all the good codes, was expecting my refund around the same timeframe as you, then the dreaded 971 showed up. Mine ended up being an identity verification issue - they needed me to confirm my identity online through ID.me. The whole process took about 2 weeks from when I got the letter to when my refund was released. The key is responding to whatever they ask for as quickly as possible. One thing that helped me was setting up text alerts through the IRS2Go app so I'd know immediately when my transcript updated. Also, if you haven't already, sign up for USPS Informed Delivery so you can see what mail is coming each day - that notice is probably already on its way to you. Try to stay positive - I know it's stressful when you're counting on that money, but the vast majority of 971 codes get resolved without major issues. Just be ready to act fast when that letter arrives! Hang in there 💪
