Filed 2023 & 2024 returns on same day - 2024 processed quickly but 2023 is stuck?

I e-filed both my 2023 and 2024 tax returns on April 15th, 2025. The 2024 return was accepted within 48 hours and I already received my refund direct deposit last week (about $3,170). But my 2023 return is still showing as "processing" in the Where's My Refund tool. It's been over 5 weeks now. The expected refund for 2023 is around $2,850. Is this normal for prior year returns to take so much longer? Has anyone else experienced this when filing current and previous year returns simultaneously? I checked my transcripts but I'm not seeing any updates for 2023.

Yes, this is completely normal. Prior year returns (2023 in your case) take significantly longer to process than current year (2024) returns. The IRS prioritizes current year returns and has dedicated processing systems for them. When you file a prior year return, it often goes into a different processing queue with fewer resources allocated. A few important points: • Prior year returns typically take 8-12 weeks minimum to process, sometimes longer • The Where's My Refund tool may not update properly for prior year returns • You should check your account transcript for code 150 (return filed) which will indicate processing has begun • Look for code 846 (refund issued) which will appear when your refund is scheduled • If nothing appears after 12 weeks, then consider contacting the IRS The good news is that you'll receive interest on your 2023 refund since it's more than 45 days from the filing deadline for that tax year. The interest is taxable income for your 2025 return though.

Thank you! This helps a lot. I had no idea they processed them so differently. Is there a specific place on the transcript I should be checking? I've never really looked at these before.

You want to look at your Account Transcript (not Return or Wage & Income transcripts). The codes will be on the right side - 150 means return filed, 570 is a hold, 971 is notice issued, and 846 is the refund issuance. Check weekly - transcripts update overnight Thursday into Friday.

Just confirming what they said. I filed my 2022 return in February this year and it took almost 14 weeks to process 🙃 It's completely ridiculous but that's how they operate.

Instead of spinning your wheels and trying to decipher transcript codes, I started using taxr.ai and it's been a game changer. It analyzes your transcript and tells you exactly what's happening in plain English. I was in the same position last year when I filed both 2022 and 2023 returns together, and taxr.ai helped me understand why my 2022 return was delayed and when I could expect my refund. You can upload your transcript right to their system and get detailed insights instead of guessing. https://taxr.ai

Sounds interesting. How exactly does it work? Does it just read your transcript or does it do more?

0 coins

It's basically an AI tool that reads your transcript and translates all those weird IRS codes and dates into normal human language. It shows you what's happening with your return, when you can expect your refund, and explains any issues. Saved me hours of googling random tax codes and stressing out. I'll never go back to trying to figure this stuff out on my own again.

THANK YOU FOR THIS RECOMMENDATION! Just tried it and wow - it actually explained everything happening with my return. Turns out there was an income verification hold I didn't even know about. The peace of mind alone was worth it. Everyone dealing with IRS stuff needs to know about this!

0 coins

Does it cost anything? Seems sus that they'd just read your transcript for free...

0 coins

There is a cost but it was totally worth it for the time it saved me and the clarity it provided. Compared to the hours I spent before trying to figure out what was happening with my return (and still being confused), it was the best money I've spent on tax-related stuff.

After waiting 7 weeks for my 2022 return with no updates, I used the Claimyr app (claimyr.com) and got connected to an actual IRS person in about 20 minutes instead of waiting on hold for hours. The agent explained exactly what was happening with my return and gave me a timeframe for when it would be processed. Seriously, I was about to lose my mind with the automated system telling me nothing useful. Getting a real person on the phone was the only way I got answers.

0 coins

did this actually work? ive tried calling the irs like 30 times and always get the "we're too busy" message 😩

0 coins

Yeah it actually worked! I was skeptical too but I was desperate after my 6th attempt at calling and getting hung up on. The app basically holds your place in line and calls you when they have an agent. Best money I've spent on tax stuff - the agent helped release my refund that had been stuck for no apparent reason.

0 coins

ok im gonna try this, im going crazy checking wmr every day and seeing no change

0 coins

I thought these apps were scams... how do they actually get you through when the IRS lines are full?

0 coins

They use some automated system that keeps dialing until it gets through. Then when it reaches a real person, it connects you. Way better than me manually redialing for hours. When you're waiting on thousands of dollars, the service fee is nothing compared to the stress it saves.

I can vouch for this too - used it last month after my return was sitting in limbo for 9 weeks. Agent told me there was a simple verification issue they needed to clear up. Money was in my account 8 days later!

0 coins

This happened to me too but I eventually got my 2023 refund after 9 weeks. The longer wait is normal for prior year returns according to the IRS agent I spoke with. Just be patient (I know it sucks).

0 coins

Check your transcript for code 570 and 971 - those usually mean there's some kind of hold or review happening. My 2023 return got stuck because they were verifying some income I reported that didn't match what they had on file (turned out to be a reporting error from one of my clients).

0 coins

I just checked again and don't see any codes at all for 2023. Just says "No record of return filed" even though I got the acceptance confirmation from my tax software. Should I be worried?

0 coins

That usually means it's still in the initial processing queue and hasn't been entered into the system yet. Prior year returns sometimes sit in this status for 4-8 weeks before any transcript update. If you got an acceptance confirmation, you're good - just gotta wait longer.

0 coins

yep this is the answer. the irs has separate teams for prior year returns and they're usualy understaffed. My 2022 return didnt even show in the system for 7 weeks then suddenly appeared with a refund date!

0 coins

Its probably stuck in the Error Resolution System. The IRS puts most prior year returns through extra screenings. When I filed my 2022 return in 2024, it took 11 weeks to get my refund vs just 2 weeks for my 2023 return.

0 coins

Pro tip: call the IRS early in the morning (right when they open) on a Tuesday or Wednesday - those are the least busy days/times. Have all your info ready including SSN, filing status, and the exact refund amount. Sometimes they can see issues that aren't showing up on the Where's My Refund tool.

0 coins

LOL good luck actually getting through! I tried this strategy for 3 weeks straight and never once got past the "we're experiencing high call volume" message before being disconnected. The IRS phone system is a joke in 2025. 🤡

0 coins

Yeah it's definitely hit or miss. I had to try 4 different days before I got through, but when I did, they were actually helpful and told me exactly why my return was delayed.

0 coins

I've had good luck with option 652 on the main menu (even though it says it's for something else) - somehow that queue seems less busy and they can still help with refund status questions.

Did you claim any recovery rebate credits or earned income credit on your 2023 return? Those automatically trigger additional review for prior year returns. I had this happen when I filed my 2022 return late - took almost 3 months to process while my 2023 return was done in 10 days.

0 coins

No recovery rebate, but I did claim EIC on the 2023 return. That could be it!

0 coins

There's your answer then. EIC claims on prior year returns get extra scrutiny. The IRS is paranoid about fraud with these credits on late-filed returns. Just keep checking your transcript weekly - it'll update eventually.

0 coins

Omg the IRS is totally broken 😡 I filed my 2023 return in January 2025 and STILL havent gotten my refund. Called 50+ times with no answer. Meanwhile they'd come after us with penalties if we were late. Double standard much???

0 coins

preach 👏 its ridiculous how they can take forever but we have strict deadlines

0 coins

To be fair, they're working with ancient computer systems from the 1960s and Congress keeps cutting their budget. The frontline employees are just as frustrated as we are.

0 coins

don't care, not my problem. if i ran my business like they run theirs id be bankrupt in a month. and they expect us to just wait months for OUR money while bills pile up? nah.

0 coins

One thing to check - did you file both returns electronically through the same tax software? Sometimes when you file multiple years together there can be an electronic submission issue with the older return even if you got an acceptance confirmation.

0 coins

Little known fact: you can request a taxpayer advocate if your refund delay is causing financial hardship. Call 877-777-4778 and explain your situation. They can sometimes expedite processing if you're facing eviction, utility shutoffs, or other serious financial issues due to not receiving your refund.

0 coins

The taxpayer advocate service is even more backed up than the regular IRS. I tried this route and they told me they're only taking the most severe hardship cases right now and have a 3-month backlog. 😖

0 coins

I worked for the IRS until last year (not giving tax advice, just explaining the system). Prior year returns go through a completely different processing pipeline than current year returns. They're literally sent to different processing centers with different staff. The 8-12 week timeframe others mentioned is accurate. If you need your money urgently, call and request hardship expedite - otherwise, just wait it out.

0 coins

Thank you for the insider perspective! Wish the IRS would make this clearer on their website. I'll wait a few more weeks before trying to call.

0 coins

Hav you tried using the IRS2Go app? Sometimes it updates before the website does. Also check your bank account - I've had refunds show up with zero notice before the Where's My Refund tool updated.

after dealing with this same nightmare scenario i gave in and used taxr.ai to figure out what was happening with my return. worth every penny - showed me exactly why my return was delayed (missing form that i had no idea was required) and what i needed to do. saved me weeks of waiting and wondering. https://taxr.ai

0 coins

is this different from just reading your transcript yourself? what does it tell you that you cant figure out on your own?

0 coins

it explains all the codes in human language, shows you the timeline for processing, identifies issues, and gives you specific action steps. i was looking at my transcript for weeks and had no idea what all the codes meant or why things were delayed. taxr showed me exactly what was happening in 2 minutes.

0 coins

oh wow that actually sounds helpful. might try it because im tired of googling random transcript codes and getting conflicting info from random forum posts from 2018 lol

0 coins

I literally just called the IRS about this exact situation yesterday. They told me that 2023 returns are now considered "prior year returns" and go through a different processing department than current year returns. The agent said to expect 10-16 weeks for processing compared to 2-3 weeks for current year returns. Completley nuts but that's our tax system for ya 🤷‍♂️

0 coins

After banging my head against the wall for 3 straight months trying to figure out what was happening with my prior year return, I finally got through to the IRS using Claimyr (claimyr.com). Turned out there was a simple verification issue they needed to clear up but nobody had bothered to send me a letter. The agent fixed it on the spot and my refund was released a week later. Sometimes talking to an actual human is the only way to get things resolved.

0 coins

How much does that service cost? Is it worth it?

0 coins

I don't remember the exact amount but it was totaly worth it to me. I had tried calling the IRS myself 15+ times over several weeks and could never get through. The service got me connected to an agent in about 30 minutes. Considering I was waiting on a $4k refund, the fee was minimal compared to what I was owed.

0 coins

I used it too after seeing it recommended here. Got through to the IRS in under an hour after wasting days trying to call myself. Agent found a simple error code that was holding up my return and fixed it right then. Refund arrived 9 days later.

0 coins

This is why I never file prior year and current year returns at the same time. Always file the prior year first, wait for it to process, THEN file current year. Learned this lesson the hard way in 2023.

0 coins

dont worry lol the IRS is running on computers from the 1960s using programming languages that nobody knows anymore. prior year returns might as well be processed by carrier pigeons for how slow they are 🐦

0 coins

lmaooo carrier pigeons might actually be faster 💀

0 coins

No joke - they literally have to print out electronic returns and have people manually enter data for certain processes. The backlog is insane.

0 coins

I found out from a tax pro that if you e-file both current and prior year returns on the same day, the prior year return sometimes gets flagged for manual review automatically, even if there are no issues with it. Just one more broken part of the system. Give it 90 days before worrying.
