Been there! I made a similar mistake a few years back and it felt overwhelming at first, but it's definitely fixable. The key is acting quickly and being completely transparent with the IRS about what happened. I'd recommend calling them first thing in the morning - the wait times are usually shorter earlier in the day. When you speak to them, have all your payment confirmation numbers ready and be clear about the mix-up. They'll likely guide you through filing amended returns for both personal and business. It's a hassle, but the IRS deals with these kinds of honest mistakes regularly. You're not the first person to do this and you won't be the last! Keep your chin up - this will get resolved.
Hey @NeonNebula! I just wanted to echo what everyone else has said - you're definitely not alone in this mistake. I work in tax prep and see payment mix-ups like this at least a few times each season. The most important thing is that you caught it relatively quickly. When you call the IRS tomorrow, make sure to have your confirmation numbers for the payment you made, along with both your SSN and business EIN ready. They'll likely walk you through the process step by step. One tip: if you get disconnected or the agent can't help, don't hesitate to call back and try again. Different agents sometimes have different levels of experience with these situations. You've got this! 💪
I've been lurking here for a while but finally created an account because I'm going through this EXACT same nightmare right now! Been locked out of my LLC account for over 2 weeks with that same "information doesn't match records" error. It's honestly maddening. This thread has been a goldmine though - I never would have thought about half these solutions! The EIN vs SSN thing that multiple people mentioned seems like the most promising lead. I'm also realizing I might have the LLC suffix issue since I've definitely been typing "My Business LLC" instead of just "My Business" like it probably appears in their system. One thing I haven't seen mentioned yet - has anyone tried logging in from a completely different network/location? I'm wondering if there's some weird IP-based issue going on too. I might try using my phone's hotspot instead of my home wifi just to rule that out. Going to work through all these suggestions systematically starting tomorrow morning during off-peak hours. It's weirdly comforting to know so many people have gotten through this successfully - gives me hope that there's actually a solution buried in FTB's bureaucratic maze somewhere! Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences and tips. This community is a lifesaver when dealing with government systems that seem designed to drive us all insane! 🙃
Great idea about trying a different network! I hadn't thought of that but it totally makes sense - government systems can have weird security restrictions that might be IP-related. The mobile hotspot trick is definitely worth trying. I'm also dealing with this nightmare right now and have been working through all the suggestions from this thread. The EIN vs SSN approach seems to be the most successful fix based on what everyone's sharing. Also totally agree about the LLC suffix thing - I bet that trips up way more people than it should! It's so frustrating that we have to become detective experts just to access our own tax accounts. Thanks for bringing up the network angle though - that's going on my list of things to try! We'll all get through this eventually 💪
I'm dealing with this same nightmare right now! Been locked out for about a week and that error message is so unhelpful. Reading through all these responses has been incredibly eye-opening though - I had no idea there were so many potential causes! I'm definitely going to try the EIN instead of SSN approach first since that seems to have worked for multiple people. Also going to make sure I'm entering my business name exactly as it appears on my original Articles of Organization (probably without "LLC" at the end knowing how picky their system is). The timing tips are really helpful too - I've been trying to call during lunch hours when everyone else is probably doing the same thing. Going to try early morning tomorrow. One thing I'll add that might help others - if you've recently updated your registered agent or made any changes to your LLC filing, double-check that those are properly reflected in FTB's system. Sometimes there's a lag between when you file amendments and when their login system actually updates. Thanks everyone for sharing your solutions - it's reassuring to know this is actually solvable even though it's a total pain! Will update if I find the magic combination that works 🤞
I've been through a similar situation with my LLC! The good news is that this is usually fixable without major penalties if you catch it early. Here are a few things that helped me when I had to sort out a filing mix-up: 1. Call early in the morning (around 8 AM) - you'll have better luck getting through 2. Have your EIN, filing confirmation, and LLC formation documents ready 3. Ask specifically about filing an amended return vs. just correcting the form type Also, don't stress too much - the FTB staff are generally pretty helpful once you get someone on the line. They deal with these kinds of mix-ups all the time. Keep us posted on how it goes!
I actually went through something very similar with my LLC last year! The key thing is to stay calm - this happens more often than you'd think. When you call, make sure to explain that you're a pass-through entity (which sounds like you are based on your description). A few tips that helped me: - Call right when they open (8 AM sharp) - Have your LLC operating agreement handy if you have one - Ask them to walk you through why they think you need form 658 specifically In my case, it turned out there was just some confusion in their system about my LLC classification. Once we cleared that up, everything was fine. The rep even told me that form 565 was correct for my situation all along. Don't panic about penalties either - if you filed in good faith and it's just a form mix-up, they're usually pretty reasonable about it. Good luck and let us know how it goes! 🤞
This is so helpful, thank you! It's really reassuring to hear from someone who went through the exact same thing. I'm definitely going to call at 8 AM sharp tomorrow with all my documents ready. The fact that it was just a system confusion in your case gives me hope that mine might be similar. I'll definitely update everyone once I get it sorted out! 🙏
Heads up: if you're moving for a job, get a letter from your new employer stating your start date and that it's a permanent position. That helped me a ton!
Just went through this nightmare myself! In addition to what others mentioned, I'd recommend getting a declaration of domicile if your new state offers it - it's basically an official statement that you intend to make that state your permanent home. Also, if you have kids, school enrollment records are gold. The FTB loves seeing evidence that you've moved your whole life, not just your mailing address. Save yourself the headache and gather MORE documents than you think you need - better to overwhelm them with proof than have them come back asking for more stuff later!

I feel for you @Amara! I went through this nightmare last month. Here's what finally worked for me: I called the FTB at exactly 7:59 AM (they open at 8) and kept hitting redial until I got through - took about 15 tries but I was literally first in the queue. Also, if you have any kind of payment deadline approaching, mention that upfront - they seem to prioritize urgent cases. The representative I finally reached was actually super helpful once I got through. Don't give up, and definitely try that early morning approach! 💪

•Wow, 15 tries at 7:59 AM - that's dedication! 😅 I'm definitely going to try this strategy tomorrow. The part about mentioning payment deadlines is really smart too. Did you end up getting your issue resolved in one call, or did it take multiple conversations? Just trying to set my expectations here. Thanks for the encouragement - sometimes it helps just knowing others have made it through the maze! 🙏

I went through this exact same frustration a few months ago! What finally worked for me was using the FTB's online appointment scheduler - you can book a phone appointment and they'll call you at the scheduled time. It's buried pretty deep on their website under "Contact Us" > "Schedule a Call" but it's a game changer. I got through in 3 days instead of weeks of calling. Also, if you're dealing with a payment issue specifically, try their "Web Pay" system first - sometimes you can resolve payment problems without needing to talk to anyone. The whole system definitely needs an overhaul, but at least there are some workarounds! Good luck! 🍀
