What docs does FTB actually need for out-of-state residency proof? Help!

Hey everyone, I'm trying to figure out what documents I need to prove out-of-state residency for the FTB. Does anyone know which ones are actually necessary and which ones I can skip? I don't want to waste time gathering stuff they don't even need. Any help would be appreciated!

I went through this process last year. Here's what worked for me: • Driver's license or state ID from your new state • Utility bills (electricity, water, gas) with your name and new address • Lease agreement or mortgage statement • Bank statements showing transactions in the new state • Vehicle registration in the new state • Voter registration card The more of these you can provide, the stronger your case. They really want to see that you've established a life in the new state. Good luck!

This is super helpful, thanks! Did you have any issues with the FTB accepting these documents?

Nope, they accepted everything without any problems. Just make sure all the dates line up with when you say you moved.

What if I don't have a driver's license in my new state yet? Will that be a big problem?

It's not a deal-breaker, but it definitely helps. If you don't have it, make sure you have plenty of other documents to make up for it.

ugh, the FTB is such a pain 🙄 I swear they make this process complicated on purpose

Tell me about it! I've been dealing with them for months. It's like they enjoy making our lives miserable 😫

Guys, it's not that bad. Just follow the instructions and you'll be fine. No need to get all dramatic 🙄

Easy for you to say. Some of us have more complicated situations. Check your privilege, bro 💅

I found a way to actually get someone on the phone at the FTB. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video explaining it: https://youtu.be/XbqD8mexcoQ

Sounds too good to be true. Are you sure it's legit?

0 coins

Yep, 100% legit. I was skeptical at first too, but it saved me hours of hold time. Totally worth the 20 bucks.

How long did you have to wait before they connected you?

0 coins

It took about an hour, but I didn't have to sit there listening to hold music. They just called me when an agent was ready.

Has anyone tried using a P.O. box in the new state instead of a physical address? Wondering if that would work...

PRO TIP: Keep copies of EVERYTHING you send them. The FTB lost my documents twice and I had to resend. Such a headache 🤦‍♂️

omg yes! This happened to me too. I swear they do it on purpose to delay the process 😡

Good advice. I always scan everything before sending it in, just in case.

Quick question - does anyone know if there's a time limit on how long after moving you need to prove residency? I moved 6 months ago but I'm just getting around to this now 😬

I think you're fine. I did mine almost a year later and didn't have any issues. Just make sure your documents cover the time period when you actually moved.

Phew, that's a relief. Thanks!

lol why is california so thirsty for our tax dollars? i moved to texas and they couldn't care less 🤠

Cuz they're broke AF and need every penny they can get 💸💸💸

Hey now, those tax dollars fund a lot of important programs. It's not all bad.

Found the californian 👆 lmao

Anyone else feel like they're guilty until proven innocent with the FTB? It's like they assume we're all trying to commit tax fraud or something 🙄

Heads up: if you're moving for a job, get a letter from your new employer stating your start date and that it's a permanent position. That helped me a ton!

This is great advice! Wish I'd known this before I submitted my stuff.

Just went through this nightmare myself! In addition to what others mentioned, I'd recommend getting a declaration of domicile if your new state offers it - it's basically an official statement that you intend to make that state your permanent home. Also, if you have kids, school enrollment records are gold. The FTB loves seeing evidence that you've moved your whole life, not just your mailing address. Save yourself the headache and gather MORE documents than you think you need - better to overwhelm them with proof than have them come back asking for more stuff later!
