IRS Verification Process: What Docs Do I Need? (Help!)

Hey everyone, I need some help with IRS verification. Has anyone gone through this process recently? What kind of documents did you need to provide? I'm feeling a bit lost and could use some guidance.

Ugh, IRS verification is such a pain. I had to go through it last year. They asked for a ton of stuff - W2s, bank statements, even utility bills to prove my address. Make sure you have everything organized before you start!

Seriously? Utility bills? That seems like overkill. Did they actually use all that stuff?

Yeah, it was ridiculous. They said it was to 'establish a pattern of residency' or something. Took forever to gather everything 🙄

I had to do this too. Pro tip: scan everything beforehand. Makes it way easier to upload or email if they need it.

I found a way to actually get someone on the phone at the IRS. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/bDXD2SD0gGk

Sounds too good to be true. Has anyone else tried this?

20 bucks to skip the hold time? Sign me up! How long did you have to wait?

It's legit, I promise! @profile 6, I only waited about 10 minutes after they connected me. Way better than hours on hold.

Idk man, giving my phone # to a random site seems sketchy af 🚩

@profile 7 I get the concern, but it's not sketchy. They just use it to forward the call. Saved me hours of frustration.

Listen up, OP. Heres what you need to do: 1. Gather ALL your tax documents from the last 3 years. This includes W2s, 1099s, and any other income statements. 2. Get copies of your bank statements for the same period. 3. Prepare a list of all addresses you've lived at during this time, with proof (lease agreements, utility bills, etc.) 4. Have your social security card and a valid photo ID ready. 5. If you've had any life changes (marriage, divorce, kids), get those documents too. 6. Write a clear, concise statement explaining why you're seeking verification. 7. Be patient. This process can take weeks or even months. Remember, the key is to be thorough and organized. Don't give them any reason to delay your case. Good luck!

@profile 10 Unfortunately, yes. They don't mess around when it comes to verification. Better to have too much than not enough!

has anyone else noticed that the IRS seems to be asking for more verification lately? I swear it wasn't this complicated a few years ago.

Yep, I've heard they're cracking down on fraud. More hoops for honest folks to jump through 🙄

Quick question - does anyone know if they accept digital copies of documents, or do they need physical ones? Trying to figure out if I need to print out 3 years worth of bank statements 😩

Pro tip: If you're having trouble getting through to the IRS, try calling right when they open. I got through in like 15 minutes last week!

What time do they open? Might have to set an alarm lol

7am Eastern Time. Set that alarm and grab some coffee! ☕

OP, whatever you do, DO NOT ignore any IRS letters or miss any deadlines they give you. I made that mistake and it was a nightmare to fix. Stay on top of everything!

Oof, sounds rough. What happened?

Long story short, they froze my refund, put a hold on my account, and I had to go through an even more intense verification process. Not worth the headache!

Anyone else feel like we need a complete overhaul of the tax system? This verification stuff is just a symptom of a bigger problem imho
