FTB Payment Problem: How to Actually Reach a Representative?
Hey everyone, I'm having some issues with my franchise tax payment and I need to talk to someone at the Franchise Tax Board. Has anyone else had trouble getting through to a representative? I've been trying to call but the wait times are insane. Any advice on how to get this sorted out quickly?

Ugh, I feel your pain! I've been trying to get through to them for weeks. It's like they don't want us to pay our taxes or something π

β’Ikr? It's almost like they're purposely making it difficult. I swear the hold music is designed to drive us insane πΆπ€ͺ

β’Maybe thats there plan all along. Make it so hard to pay that we all give up and they can fine us later π

I actually found a method that works to get someone on the phone. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video explaining it: https://youtu.be/XbqD8mexcoQ

β’Sounds too good to be true. Are you sure it's legit?

β’Yeah, I was skeptical at first too, but I tried it and it actually worked. Saved me hours of frustration.

β’20 bucks tho? Thats kinda steep just to talk to someone we should be able to reach anyway π

β’I get it, but for me, time is money. I'd rather pay $20 than waste half a day on hold.

Have you tried reaching out to them on social media? Sometimes they respond faster there. Worth a shot!

I had a similar issue last year. Here's what worked for me: 1. Call first thing in the morning when they open 2. Have all your documents ready 3. Be super polite (even if you're frustrated) 4. Ask for a direct extension or email if possible Hope this helps! Good luck!

β’For real tho. You'd think with all the money they collect, they could afford a decent phone system π€‘

Have you checked their website? Sometimes you can resolve payment issues online without having to call. Might save you some time and headache.

β’I tried that first, but my issue is a bit complicated. Looks like I'll have to talk to a human after all π

I had success getting through by calling exactly at 8 AM when they open - set multiple alarms! Also, try the callback option if they offer it instead of staying on hold. I know it's frustrating, but persistence pays off. Another trick is to call on Tuesdays or Wednesdays - Mondays and Fridays tend to be their busiest days. Hope you get through soon!

β’This is really helpful advice! I never thought about the day of the week making a difference. Tuesday morning at 8 AM sharp it is! Thanks for sharing these practical tips π

I've been dealing with FTB for years and here's my strategy: try calling their business line instead of the general number - it's usually less busy. Also, if you have a CPA or tax professional, they often have better access to representatives. In the meantime, make sure you document everything - dates you called, reference numbers, etc. This will help when you finally get through. The system is definitely frustrating, but don't give up!

β’Wait, there's a separate business line? That's genius! I've been banging my head against the wall calling the main number. Do you happen to know if they publish that business line number anywhere, or is it one of those "insider secrets"? Also totally agree on documenting everything - learned that lesson the hard way with other government agencies π

I feel for you @Amara! I went through this nightmare last month. Here's what finally worked for me: I called the FTB at exactly 7:59 AM (they open at 8) and kept hitting redial until I got through - took about 15 tries but I was literally first in the queue. Also, if you have any kind of payment deadline approaching, mention that upfront - they seem to prioritize urgent cases. The representative I finally reached was actually super helpful once I got through. Don't give up, and definitely try that early morning approach! πͺ

β’Wow, 15 tries at 7:59 AM - that's dedication! π I'm definitely going to try this strategy tomorrow. The part about mentioning payment deadlines is really smart too. Did you end up getting your issue resolved in one call, or did it take multiple conversations? Just trying to set my expectations here. Thanks for the encouragement - sometimes it helps just knowing others have made it through the maze! π

I went through this exact same frustration a few months ago! What finally worked for me was using the FTB's online appointment scheduler - you can book a phone appointment and they'll call you at the scheduled time. It's buried pretty deep on their website under "Contact Us" > "Schedule a Call" but it's a game changer. I got through in 3 days instead of weeks of calling. Also, if you're dealing with a payment issue specifically, try their "Web Pay" system first - sometimes you can resolve payment problems without needing to talk to anyone. The whole system definitely needs an overhaul, but at least there are some workarounds! Good luck! π

β’Oh wow, I had no idea they had an online appointment scheduler! That sounds like exactly what I need - way better than playing phone roulette every morning. I'm definitely going to hunt for that "Schedule a Call" option on their website tonight. Three days vs weeks of calling? That's a no-brainer! Thanks for sharing this hidden gem, you might have just saved my sanity π Did you find the scheduler easy to use once you found it?

I've been lurking here for a while but had to create an account to share this - I actually work for a tax resolution company and we deal with FTB daily. Here's the insider scoop: their phone system is absolutely overwhelmed, but there are a few tricks that work. First, try calling at exactly 8:00 AM Pacific on Tuesday or Wednesday (avoid Mondays like the plague). Second, if you're calling about a payment, have your SSN, tax year, and payment amount ready - they can often resolve simple payment issues in under 10 minutes if you have everything ready. Third, and this is key - if you get disconnected, ask for the rep's direct extension before you hang up. Most people don't know you can do this, but they're allowed to give it out. Also, @GalacticGladiator is spot on about that appointment scheduler - it's a lifesaver but super hidden on their site. Hope this helps everyone here! π

β’Wow, this is incredibly helpful! Thank you for taking the time to share these insider tips @Fatima. The detail about asking for a direct extension is brilliant - I never would have thought to do that, but it makes total sense. I'm definitely going to try the Tuesday 8 AM approach with all my documents ready. Quick question though - when you mention having the "payment amount ready," do you mean the amount I'm trying to pay, or the amount they say I owe? Sometimes there's a discrepancy and I want to make sure I'm prepared with the right info. Thanks again for sharing your professional knowledge with us mere mortals! π

β’This is exactly the kind of insider knowledge we need more of! @Fatima thank you so much for sharing these professional tips. The Tuesday/Wednesday timing makes perfect sense - I bet Mondays are chaos with everyone trying to catch up from the weekend. I'm definitely going to try that 8 AM sharp strategy this week. One follow-up question: when you mention having everything ready, should I also have my bank account info handy for setting up payments, or do they usually handle that separately? Don't want to fumble around looking for routing numbers when I finally get someone on the line! This community is amazing - love how we're all helping each other navigate this bureaucratic maze πͺ
