How long until SDI approval after status shows pending? Also worried about expired BoA card
I'm getting so stressed waiting for my SDI claim to be processed! My disability period started on 1/10/2025 and EDD received everything by 1/23/2025. My online account just says "pending" under the status column. How much longer should I expect to wait before approval? Also, I realized my Bank of America EDD debit card from my previous disability claim expired last month. Will they automatically know it's expired and send me a new one? Or do I need to request it somehow? I've heard people are waiting 4-5 weeks just to get their cards these days which is making me really anxious about paying rent next month. Has anyone been through this process recently? How long did your approval take after showing "pending"?

•Thanks for responding! 3 weeks seems like forever when bills are due. Did you have to call them at all to speed things up or did it just automatically change from pending?

The EDD SDI claim processing timeline varies, but typically once it shows as "pending" you can expect 10-14 business days for processing under normal circumstances. However, I should note that the system is currently experiencing higher than usual volume, so many claims are taking 3-4 weeks from the "pending" status to approval. Regarding your Bank of America EDD debit card: Yes, they will automatically issue you a new one if your previous card has expired. The system recognizes this when processing your new claim. However, new cards typically take 7-10 business days to arrive after your claim is approved (not after it shows pending). If you're concerned about timing, I recommend setting up direct deposit instead of waiting for the card. You can do this through your SDI Online account under "Account Information" and then "Payment Method.

•This is really helpful info, thank you! I didn't even realize I could set up direct deposit. I'll check out that option right away since that might be faster than waiting for a new card.

THEY ARE RIDICULOUSLY SLOW RIGHT NOW!!!! My claim was pending for 5 WEEKS before approval even though my doctor submitted everything electronically the first day. And then I waited ANOTHER 3 WEEKS for my stupid BofA card to arrive. EDD is a total disaster in 2025 - worse than during covid!!! Call them ASAP and keep calling until you get through. The online system is useless and they ignore messages completely.

•I know exactly how you feel! EDD is sooo frustrating. I ended up using Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through to an agent after trying for days. They helped me connect with EDD in about 20 minutes instead of calling for hours. There's a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ?si=1hcSq3KFtCr4oAmd. Worth it to get actual answers about your claim status instead of just waiting and worrying.

I just went through this exact situation last month! My claim was pending for about 2.5 weeks before changing to approved. As for the BofA card, yes, they'll automatically send you a new one, but here's what you should know: 1. They don't ship the new card until your claim is actually approved (not while it's still pending) 2. The card shipping takes about 7-10 business days after approval 3. If you need the money faster, definitely set up direct deposit as another commenter suggested Also, make sure your address is current in both your SDI Online account AND your BofA prepaid account (they're separate systems). I made that mistake and my card got sent to my old address initially.

•Oh that's a good point about the addresses! I moved since my last claim so I better double check both systems. Do you know if there's a way to check the BofA prepaid account if I can't access my old card anymore?

•You can go to https://prepaid.bankofamerica.com/eddcard and use the "Forgot Password" option with your SSN to reset access. Then you can verify/update your address in their system. I had to do this exact thing!

my disability was actually for pregnancy and i had trouble with my claim too. its showing pending but i think its because my doctor put the wrong start date on the form and now nobody will answer the phone when i call!! grrr. anyway when i called bank of america about the card they said they can't send a new one until edd tells them to. so its all connected. if your claim gets approved they'll send the card automatically but not until then. i hope your disability isnt for something serious! i'm just having a baby lol. good luck!

•Thanks for sharing your experience! My disability is for a back injury from work, not pregnancy. But it sounds like we're having similar issues with the system. Hope everything goes well with your baby!

Just to add to what others have said - the "pending" status is just the first step. After that it changes to "processing" and then finally "paid" once everything is approved. Each step can take 1-2 weeks in my experience. Also, I'm not sure if anyone mentioned this, but while you're waiting, make sure you're certifying for your benefit periods if they've started. You can still certify even if your initial claim is pending approval. This way, once it's approved, they can release multiple payments at once instead of you having to certify for past weeks.

•THIS IS NOT ACCURATE FOR SDI!!!! You're thinking of unemployment (UI). Disability (SDI) doesn't have weekly certifications like unemployment does. For SDI, your doctor certifies your disability period and you only need to submit additional certification if you're extending beyond the original end date. PLEASE don't spread misinformation - it just confuses people more!!

•Oh wait you're right! I was thinking of UI not SDI. My bad! Thanks for correcting me.

I waited 18 days from pending to approval last month. BofA sent new card automatically.

Just FYI there's a huge backlog due to their new computer system update that happened in December. They're taking FOREVER on everything disability related. My sister works for the state (not EDD) and said they're hearing about massive delays across all state benefits right now. Budget cuts + new systems = disaster!

•That actually makes a lot of sense. I was wondering why it seemed to be taking longer than when I had a claim two years ago. Guess I'll need to be more patient... and maybe look into a temporary loan from family if this drags on much longer.
