EDD SDI payments started but no debit card yet - normal timeline?
Just got approved for disability benefits (yay finally!) and noticed a deposit hit my account yesterday. The weird thing is, I just received my approval letter in the mail yesterday too, but there's no Bank of America EDD debit card yet. Is this normal? Do they send the payments before the actual card arrives? How long should I expect to wait for the card to show up? This is my first time on SDI and I'm not sure if I need to call someone or if I just need to be patient. Anyone know the typical timeline?

•Thank you! That's a relief to hear. I was getting worried that something was wrong with my claim.

The debit card is sent separately from Bank of America, not directly from EDD. It typically takes 7-10 business days after your first payment is processed to arrive. If you don't receive it within 10 business days, you should contact Bank of America EDD Debit Card customer service at 1-866-692-9374. You can also set up a direct deposit to your personal bank account through your SDI Online portal if you prefer not to use the debit card. Just log in to your account, go to 'Account Options' and look for 'Direct Deposit'.

•This is super helpful information, thank you! I'll wait the 10 business days before getting concerned. I didn't realize I could set up direct deposit - I'm definitely going to look into that option.

•Yes, it's my first time on disability! I think I was just overthinking everything because I wasn't sure what to expect with the timeline. Thanks for the reassurance!

THE EDD IS THE WORST ABOUT COMMUNICATION!!! I waited THREE WEEKS for my card while they kept depositing money into the account I couldn't access! Called Bank of America multiple times and they kept saying 'it's been shipped' but wouldn't give me a tracking number or anything. Finally showed up randomly one day.

This is completely normal. The EDD payments and the Bank of America debit card operate on different systems. Here's what's happening: 1. EDD approves your claim and begins processing payments 2. Your approval letter is sent 3. First payment is issued to your debit card account 4. Bank of America gets notification to issue a card (this happens AFTER your first payment) 5. Card is mailed separately (can take 7-10 business days) If you need access to your funds immediately, you can call Bank of America EDD at 1-866-692-9374 to request expedited shipping of your card (may cost extra), or you can set up direct deposit to your personal bank account through your SDI Online portal. Keep your approval letter safe - it contains important information about your claim period and benefit amount that you might need for reference later.

•Thank you for breaking down the process so clearly! This timeline makes perfect sense now. I'll probably just wait since it sounds like the card should arrive soon, but it's good to know there are options if I need the funds right away.

If you're really stressed about getting your money, try using Claimyr to get through to an EDD rep fast. I was in a similar situation and spent days trying to reach someone. Used claimyr.com and got connected to an agent in like 20 minutes who confirmed my card status. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ?si=1hcSq3KFtCr4oAmd

•is that service legit? seems sketchy to pay someone just to get through to edd when it's supposed to be free to call them

•Yeah it's legit. I was skeptical too but when you've called EDD 30+ times getting disconnected, spending a little to actually talk to someone becomes worth it. Saved me like 2 days of stress calls.

This happened to me last month! The card took about 9 days to arrive after my first payment. One thing to note - when you DO get the card, make sure you activate it right away through the Bank of America EDD card website. You'll need to create an account there to manage your debit card, which is separate from your SDI Online account. Also, they don't automatically send you a new card when you have multiple disability claims - they reuse your existing card for future claims, so keep it even after your claim ends!

•That's a great tip about keeping the card! I wouldn't have thought about that. Will definitely hang onto it after this claim is over. Thanks for the advice about activating it right away too.

I just went through this exact same thing a few months ago! The timing is totally normal - EDD processes and sends payments before Bank of America issues the physical card. I think it's because they want to make sure you get your benefits as soon as possible even if there are postal delays with the card. Mine took exactly 8 business days to arrive after my first payment hit. One thing that helped me feel less anxious was checking my SDI Online account regularly - you can see all your payment history there even before you get the card. Congrats on getting approved and don't stress, the card will come!

•This is really reassuring to hear from someone who just went through it! I've been checking my SDI Online account obsessively since I got approved - it's nice to know that's normal too. 8 business days sounds totally reasonable. Thank you for the encouragement!

Hey Emma! This exact same thing happened to me when I first got on SDI about 6 months ago. I was so confused when I saw the payment in my account but no card in sight! Turns out it's completely normal - EDD starts your payments right away but the Bank of America card ships separately and takes about a week to 10 days. I think they do it this way so you don't have to wait for the postal service to get your benefits started. My card showed up on day 9 and I've had no issues since. Just keep an eye on your mailbox and don't panic if it takes the full 10 business days. The system works, it's just not very intuitive for first-timers!

•Thanks Arjun! It's so helpful to hear from people who've been through this recently. I was definitely overthinking it because everything seemed to be happening out of order, but now I understand it's just how their system works. Really appreciate everyone sharing their experiences - makes me feel so much better about the whole process!

This is super reassuring to read as someone who's about to apply for SDI! I had no idea that payments could start before the card arrives - that actually sounds like a good thing since you don't have to wait for mail delays to get your benefits. Question though - when you say the deposit "hit your account," do you mean it went to your regular bank account or to the EDD debit card account that you just can't access yet without the physical card? I'm trying to understand how the money flow works before I submit my application.

•Great question! When I said the deposit "hit my account," I meant it went to the EDD debit card account that Bank of America manages - not my regular personal bank account. So the money is there, but I can't access it until I get the physical card to activate it (or set up direct deposit to my personal account through the SDI portal). It's kind of like they created a Bank of America account for me and deposited the money there, but I need the card to actually use it. Hope that makes sense! The timing worked out to be about the same either way since the card arrived pretty quickly.

I'm going through the exact same situation right now! Just got my approval letter yesterday and saw my first payment deposited, but no debit card yet. Reading through all these responses is making me feel so much better - I was starting to worry that something went wrong with my application. It sounds like 7-10 business days is pretty standard for the card to arrive. Thanks for asking this question Emma, and thanks to everyone who shared their experiences! It's really helpful to know what to expect as a first-timer with SDI.

•Debra, I'm so glad this thread helped you too! It's amazing how many of us go through the same confusion when we're new to the SDI system. The lack of clear communication from EDD about their process definitely doesn't help. But it sounds like we're both in the same boat - approved, payments started, just waiting on that card to arrive. Hopefully we'll both have our cards within the next week or so! It's really reassuring to know this is totally normal and not something to stress about.

I'm dealing with this exact situation right now too! Got my approval letter on Tuesday and saw the first payment show up yesterday, but still no debit card. Reading through everyone's experiences here is such a relief - I was starting to think maybe I needed to call someone or that there was an issue with my claim. It's really helpful to see that 7-10 business days seems to be the standard timeline and that EDD starts payments before the card arrives. I had no idea they operated on separate systems! Thanks for posting this question Emma, and thanks to everyone who shared their timelines and advice. Definitely going to look into setting up direct deposit like Olivia mentioned too.

•Ella, I'm in the exact same boat as you and Emma! Just got approved this week and seeing all these similar experiences is so reassuring. I was totally panicking thinking I did something wrong when I saw the payment but no card. It's crazy how EDD doesn't explain this process better - like a simple "your card will arrive 7-10 days after your first payment" would save so many people from stressing out! Definitely going to set up direct deposit too since it seems way more convenient than waiting for cards in the mail for future payments.
