Disability payment finally approved - will it go to my existing UI BOA card or get a new card?

After fighting with EDD for nearly 4 months (way longer than it should've taken!), my disability claim was FINALLY approved yesterday! The online portal shows a payment was issued, but I'm confused about how I'll actually get the money. I already have a Bank of America EDD card from when I was on unemployment last year. Will my disability payment just load onto that same card? Or does SDI send out a completely different card? The EDD website is super vague about this. Also, if anyone knows how long it typically takes for the money to appear once a payment is 'issued,' that would be super helpful. I've got rent due next week and I'm cutting it close.

They use the same card for all edd benefits. if u already have one from ui it will go on that

Oh thank goodness! That makes things so much easier. Do you know roughly how long it takes to show up on the card after the system says 'payment issued'?

Congratulations on finally getting approved! To answer your question: Yes, if you already have a Bank of America EDD debit card from unemployment benefits, your SDI payments will be deposited to that same card. The EDD uses the same payment system for UI, SDI, and PFL benefits.\n\nAs for timing, once the payment shows as \

That's super helpful info, thank you! My card is still valid (just checked the expiration date). I'll give it until Monday before I start panicking about the money not showing up. Really appreciate the clear explanation.

Thanks for sharing your experience! I guess I'll try to be patient for a few days before freaking out.

I went through this EXACT situation back in January. Waited FOREVER for approval, then panicked about where the money would go. Called EDD about 50 times trying to get an answer - waste of time!! They never pick up!! Finally found out that yes, it goes on your existing UI card. Mine took about 2 days to show up after it said \

If you need to reach EDD SDI quickly in the future, I'd recommend using Claimyr (claimyr.com). It's a service that gets you through to an actual EDD representative without waiting on hold for hours. They have a video demo that shows how it works: https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ?si=1hcSq3KFtCr4oAmd. I used it when my disability claim was pending for weeks and finally got someone on the phone who could tell me exactly what was happening.

Congrats on getting your payment after all that time! When my disability was approved in january the payment took exactly 1 day to hit my card. Relief!!!

One thing to watch out for - if you haven't used your BOA card in a long time (like 6+ months), sometimes they deactivate it for security reasons. If you try to use it and it's not working, you might have to call BOA EDD customer service to reactivate it. This happened to me after not using mine for about 8 months between benefits.\n\nAlso, double-check that your address is current with BOA if you've moved since you last received unemployment. Your online EDD account address and your BOA card address are updated separately.\n\nBut yes, as others said, all EDD benefits (UI, SDI, PFL) use the same card system.

Oh that's a really good point! I haven't used the card in probably 9-10 months. I just tried logging into the BOA EDD account online and it worked, so hopefully that means the card is still active. But I'll definitely keep that in mind if I have any issues. And thankfully I haven't moved, so that shouldn't be a problem. Thank you!

my sister got disability last year and they sent her a new card even though she told them she had one from unemployment already. total waste! she ended up with two cards and had to transfer money from one to the other. edd is so confusing sometimes

That's unusual! Typically they use the same card, but occasionally there can be system errors. If anyone ends up with two cards, you can call Bank of America EDD customer service to have funds transferred between them or to deactivate the duplicate card.

That's fantastic news! So glad it worked out quickly for you. 36 hours is pretty typical from what I've seen. Thanks for posting the update - it's really helpful for others who might be in the same situation wondering about timing. Hope things are looking up for you now after that long 4-month wait!

Congrats on finally getting your approval! That 4-month wait sounds absolutely brutal. I'm dealing with a similar situation right now - been waiting 2.5 months for my disability claim to get approved and it's been such a stressful process. Really encouraging to hear that yours finally went through and the payment showed up quickly on your existing card. Did you have to do anything special to get them to finally approve it, or did it just eventually work its way through their system? I'm trying to figure out if there's anything I can do to speed mine along.

Hey Jacob! I feel your pain - that 2.5 month wait is already way too long. Honestly, I don't think there was anything special I did to speed it up. I called probably 20+ times over those 4 months and mostly just got told "it's under review" or couldn't get through at all. What finally seemed to help was when I submitted additional medical documentation from my doctor that was more specific about my limitations and how they prevent me from working. I also had my doctor's office call EDD directly to clarify some things on the forms. But honestly, I think it was just a matter of waiting for someone to actually look at my file. The whole system seems backed up. Hang in there - hopefully yours comes through soon! @Jacob Lewis
