Just got EDD SDI approval - How do I get my Bank of America debit card?

Finally got my disability claim approved after the longest 4 weeks of my life! But now I'm confused about the payment part. How exactly do I get the Bank of America EDD debit card? Does it just show up automatically in the mail? Do I need to call someone or order it online somewhere? This is my first time on disability and I'm trying to budget for bills coming up next week. My account on SDI Online shows the claim is approved with a payment processed, but I don't see any instructions about the card. Thanks for any help!

Thank you! That's a relief. Did yours come in a plain envelope? I'm worried I might miss it or think it's junk mail.

The Bank of America EDD debit card is automatically mailed to you once your first payment is processed. It typically arrives within 7-10 business days. The card comes in a plain white envelope that can look like junk mail, so check your mail carefully! Once you receive it, you'll need to activate it by calling the number on the sticker or visiting the BofA EDD card website. If it's been more than 10 business days since your payment was processed and you haven't received your card, you should contact Bank of America EDD customer service at 1-866-692-9374. Keep in mind that this card will be used for all future disability payments, so don't throw it away even after your claim ends. They use the same card for up to 3 years.

This is super helpful information! I'll keep an eye out for that plain envelope. Do you know if I can set up direct deposit to my regular bank account instead of using the card? I prefer having everything in one place.

WATCH OUT for that envelope!!! I threw mine away by accident thinking it was credit card spam and had to wait another 10 days for a replacement card. And BofA has THE WORST customer service for these EDD cards. I spent literally 4 hours on hold when I needed a replacement.

OMG same!!! The envelope looks EXACTLY like those pre-approved credit card offers. No obvious EDD markings. They really should make it more clear.

To answer your question about direct deposit - yes, you can set up direct deposit to your regular bank account, but you have to wait until you receive the BofA card first. Once you have the card, you can go to the Bank of America EDD card website (https://prepaid.bankofamerica.com/eddcard/) and set up a transfer to your personal account. I recommend setting up automatic transfers so you don't have to manually transfer each payment. Also, if you're in a rush for your money, you can call Bank of America to see if your card has been mailed yet and request expedited shipping for a fee. It might be worth it if you need the funds quickly for bills.

Thank you! I'll definitely set up that automatic transfer once I get the card. Good to know I have options if the card doesn't arrive quickly enough.

I just went through this exact thing last month! one thing nobody mentioned - when you DO get the card, make sure you change the pin immediately. My neighbor had someone steal hers from the mail and drained it before she even knew it arrived.

This is excellent advice. You should also register for account alerts so you're notified of any transactions. The BofA EDD cards don't have the same fraud protections as regular debit cards, so you need to be extra vigilant.

If you're having a hard time getting answers about your EDD card or need to check on its status, I highly recommend using Claimyr to get through to BofA's EDD department. I spent days trying to get through on my own and kept getting disconnected. Claimyr got me connected to a rep in about 10 minutes. They have a service that calls EDD for you and connects you when an agent is on the line. Saved me hours of frustration! You can see how it works in their video demo: https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ?si=1hcSq3KFtCr4oAmd or just go to claimyr.com. It was seriously worth it when I was worried about my missing card.

Does that actually work?? I've been trying to get through to someone for 3 days about my missing card replacement!

The Bank of America EDD card doesn't have monthly fees, and you get free withdrawals at BofA ATMs. As for taxes - California SDI benefits are not taxable at the state level, but they are taxable federally. You'll get a 1099-G form next January for filing your taxes. I recommend setting aside a portion for federal taxes if you can afford to.

Update: My card arrived today! It was definitely in a very plain white envelope that looked like junk mail, so I'm glad you all warned me to watch for it. I've activated it and set up the automatic transfer to my regular bank account. Thanks everyone for all your helpful advice!

Great news! Just remember to keep that card somewhere safe even after your claim ends. EDD will use the same card for any future claims for up to 3 years, so don't throw it away. Hope your recovery goes well!

Congrats on getting approved and receiving your card! Just wanted to add a few tips I learned the hard way: 1) Download the BofA Prepaid mobile app to easily check your balance and transaction history, 2) If you ever need cash, stick to BofA ATMs to avoid fees - other ATMs can charge $2-3 per withdrawal, and 3) Keep the card activation paperwork because it has important phone numbers you might need later. Also, even though you set up automatic transfers, it can take 1-2 business days for the money to show up in your regular account, so plan accordingly for urgent expenses. Glad everything worked out for you!
