Will EDD deposit SDI payments to my old unemployment card or send a new one?

Just found out my disability claim was approved (yay!) but now I'm confused about the payment method. When I filled out the SDI application, I selected the debit card option since I still have my old EDD unemployment card from 2021 that hasn't expired yet. The claim status shows a payment was issued today, but I haven't received any notification about a new card being mailed. Will the SDI payments go on my existing unemployment card, or am I supposed to get a separate card for disability benefits? I need to know since I've got rent due next week and I'm stressing about whether I'll have access to these funds in time.

Congrats on the approval! Your disability payments will go onto the same EDD debit card you already have from unemployment. The cards are used for both UI and SDI payments. If your card is still active (not expired), the money should be loaded onto it within 1-2 business days after the payment is processed. You might want to check the balance online through Bank of America's EDD card portal to confirm when it hits.

Thank you SO much! That's a huge relief. I just checked my old card balance through the BofA website and nothing's there yet, but I'll keep checking. Appreciate the quick response!

Make sure your card isnt expired!! Mine had expired without me noticing and I had to wait almost 3 weeks for a new one after my claim was approved. THE WORST timing ever when bills are due!!!

Ugh that sounds awful! I just double-checked and my card is good until 11/2025, so I should be ok. Did they automatically send you a new one or did you have to call them?

they sent it automatically but it took FOREVER and the tracking info they gave me was wrong. if yours is still valid ur good tho

I actually had a different experience. When I got disability after having unemployment before, they did send me a new card even though my old one wasn't expired. I think it depends on how long it's been since you used the unemployment card. Either way, you can always call Bank of America EDD card customer service at 1-866-692-9374 to check if payments have been posted to your card, regardless of whether you have the physical card with you.

This is correct. EDD uses the same card system for both UI and SDI, but if your card has been inactive for over a year, Bank of America may issue a new one automatically. The funds themselves are typically available 1-2 days after EDD shows the payment as issued in your online account. If you don't see the money on your card after 3 business days, that's when you should contact EDD directly to verify which card the payment was sent to.

has anyone tried Claimyr to get through to EDD when there are issues with payments not showing up on cards? i spent THREE DAYS trying to get through about my missing SDI payment last month, kept getting disconnected. Finally tried claimyr.com and got through to a rep in like 20 minutes. they have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ?si=1hcSq3KFtCr4oAmd its way better than going crazy hitting redial all day!!

Is that the service that calls EDD for you? I've heard about it but wasn't sure if it was legit or worth it.

I think it varies based on when your last UI claim was. In my experience, if it's been more than 3 years since your last unemployment claim, they'll automatically send a new card for disability. But if your old card is still valid (check expiration date) and it's been less than 3 years, they'll use the same card. Either way, you'll get the money, but having access to it might take longer if they're sending a new card. The safest bet is to call the EDD SDI customer service line (not the Bank of America number) to confirm which card they're sending the payment to. That way you won't be surprised if a new card arrives.

Thanks for the detailed info! My unemployment ended in mid-2021, so it's been about 4 years. I guess I should prepare for the possibility of a new card arriving. I'll try calling EDD tomorrow morning to confirm.

Oh wow, good tip! I'll keep an eye out for any mail from Bank of America just in case. Those envelopes do look kind of generic.

Update us when you figure out which card it goes to! It would be helpful to know what happens in your situation since there seems to be different experiences here. I've always wondered about this process myself.

I definitely will! The payment was issued yesterday according to my SDI Online account, so I should know in the next few days whether it goes to my old card or if I get a new one in the mail.

UPDATE: The money just showed up on my old unemployment card! It took exactly 2 business days after the payment was issued according to the SDI Online portal. No new card needed! Thanks everyone for your help, this community is amazing!

Great news! Glad it worked out and you didn't have to wait for a new card. Thanks for coming back to update us!

That's awesome news! Thanks for updating us - this is exactly the kind of info that helps other people in similar situations. It's great to know that for someone who had UI end in 2021, the old card still worked for SDI payments in 2025. This thread is going to be super helpful for future reference!

So helpful to have this confirmation! I'm in a similar boat - my UI ended in 2022 and I just applied for SDI. This gives me hope that my old card will still work too. Really appreciate you taking the time to update everyone with the outcome!
