EDD disability payments to old BofA unemployment card - been a month with no new card

I started disability leave for my back surgery three weeks ago and I'm freaking out about getting paid. My EDD account shows they've processed two payments already (totaling around $1,450), but I haven't received anything physical. I used to have an EDD debit card from when I collected unemployment during 2020, but I have no idea where that card is now (pretty sure I threw it out when it expired). Will they automatically send me a new Bank of America card for SDI benefits? Or do my disability payments go to that same old unemployment card? If it's supposed to be the same card, how do I report it lost? It's been almost a month since my first payment was supposedly issued and I'm getting really worried since rent is due next week. Has anyone dealt with this situation before?

Yes, they use the same Bank of America card for all EDD payments (unemployment, disability, paid family leave). If your old card is lost, you need to contact Bank of America EDD Debit Card customer service ASAP at 1-866-692-9374 to report it lost and request a replacement. The money is sitting in your account but you just can't access it without the card. The new card usually takes 7-10 business days to arrive. I had this exact same problem last year when I went on disability after having unemployment in 2021. Spent hours trying to get through to EDD before I found out that Claimyr.com can get you connected with an EDD agent in minutes instead of waiting on hold all day. Check out their demo video: https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ?si=1hcSq3KFtCr4oAmd. Saved me so much frustration when I needed to verify some disability certification details with an actual person.

Oh no! So all my payments have been going to that old card this whole time? I definitely don't have it anymore. I'll call Bank of America right away. Thank you so much for this info!

Thanks! Did you have to verify a bunch of information to get the replacement card? I'm worried because it's been so long since I had that account.

DONT BOTHER CALLING EDD!! They wont help with card issues. Bank of America handles all the cards and you have to call them directly at 1-866-692-9374. Make sure you have your SSN and address ready. They'll cancel your old card and send you a new one. DO NOT PAY FOR EXPEDITED SHIPPING IT'S A RIP OFF!!

Thank you! I'll call BofA directly instead of wasting time with EDD. Really appreciate the advice and phone number!

Just to add to what others have said - when you get your new card, you might want to set up direct deposit from your BoA account to your personal bank account. That way you don't have to worry about losing the card again for future payments. There's an option in the Bank of America EDD debit card website that lets you set up automatic transfers whenever money hits your card. I've been on SDI for my pregnancy disability leave and set it up this way - so much easier!

That's such a good idea! I didn't even know you could set up auto-transfers. Will definitely do that once I get the new card. Thanks for the tip!

This happens ALL the time with disability claims. The EDD and Bank of America don't communicate well about this stuff. I work in HR and about 25% of our employees who go on disability have this exact problem. The frustrating part is that EDD shows the payments as "paid" on their end because they've transferred the money to B of A, but you can't access it without the card. One important thing - when you call Bank of America, make sure you tell them it's for an EDD debit card. Their regular customer service reps can't help with EDD cards. And expect a wait time of at least 30-45 minutes to speak with someone unless you call right when they open.

Thank you for explaining this! It's so confusing when the EDD website shows payments but nothing's showing up in my bank. I'll make sure to specify it's an EDD card when I call BofA.

I had this same issue when transitioning from unemployment to disability last year. A little-known fact: if you've already had payments deposited to your lost card, Bank of America will waive the rush fee for the replacement since they consider it an active account. Just ask them about this when you call - saved me $10! Also, double-check your address on file with both EDD and Bank of America. If there's any discrepancy, it can cause issues with your new card delivery. I learned this the hard way when my card was sent to my old address because EDD had updated my info but BoA hadn't.

Wait thats not true tho?? I tried this exact thing in January and they still charged me $10 for expedited shipping. Maybe depends on who you talk to but they told me all rush orders have fees no matter what.

ok but am i the only one who thinks its CRAZY that EDD is still using Bank of America for this in 2025?? They've had so many fraud issues and their customer service is terrible. My sister in Nevada gets her disability on a different card system and says it's way better. California EDD needs to get with the times!

Just checking back - were you able to get through to Bank of America? Did they help you with the replacement card? Hope you got it sorted out before rent was due!

Yes! Finally got it resolved. Had to wait on hold for almost an hour but Bank of America is sending me a new card that should arrive next week. They said all my payments are safe in the account. I ended up borrowing money from my sister for rent, but at least I know the disability money is coming. Thanks for checking back!

Glad you got it sorted out! For future reference, you can also create an online account at prepaid.bankofamerica.com/eddcard to check your balance and manage your card without having to call. Once you get your new card, I'd recommend setting up the online account and downloading their mobile app - makes it much easier to keep track of your payments and you can even set up text alerts when money gets deposited. Hope your back surgery recovery goes smoothly!

This is really helpful advice! I didn't know about the online account option. I'll definitely set that up once I get my new card - would have saved me a lot of stress if I had known about it earlier. Thanks for the tip about the mobile app and text alerts too. My surgery went well and I'm healing up nicely, just been worried about the money situation. Really appreciate everyone's help in this thread!

I went through something similar when I transitioned from unemployment to disability benefits last year. One thing I learned is that if you still have access to your old online banking login from when you had the unemployment card, you might be able to log into the Bank of America EDD website and see your current balance even without the physical card. The login credentials sometimes stay active even after the card expires. Worth trying at prepaid.bankofamerica.com/eddcard before you get your replacement card - at least you'll know for sure that your money is there! Also, when you do get your new card, write down the card number and keep it somewhere safe so you don't have to go through this stress again.

That's brilliant advice about trying the old login! I never would have thought to check if my credentials still worked. I'm going to try logging into the BofA EDD website right now to see if I can at least check my balance while I wait for the new card. Writing down the card number is such a smart idea too - I definitely should have done that with my original card. Thanks for sharing your experience!

Hey Nia, I just went through this exact same situation about 6 months ago! One thing that really helped me was calling Bank of America first thing in the morning (like 8 AM) - the wait times are much shorter then. Also, make sure you have your Social Security number ready and any information you remember about your old card. Something I wish I had known earlier is that you can actually check if your old online login still works at prepaid.bankofamerica.com/eddcard before your new card arrives. Sometimes the login credentials stay active even after the physical card expires, so you might be able to see your balance and confirm the money is there while you wait for the replacement. Also, once you get your new card, definitely set up the mobile app and text alerts like others mentioned. It makes such a difference for peace of mind! Hope your back surgery recovery is going well and you get this resolved quickly.

This is such great advice about calling early in the morning! I wish I had known that when I was trying to get through yesterday - I called in the afternoon and was on hold forever. I'm definitely going to try the online login suggestion too. It would be such a relief to at least see that the money is actually there while I wait for my new card. Thanks for all the helpful tips and for asking about my recovery - it's been going better than expected, just the financial stress has been tough!

I'm going through the exact same thing right now! Just started my disability claim two weeks ago and was panicking because I couldn't find my old EDD card from 2020 either. Reading through all these responses has been so helpful - I had no idea that Bank of America handles the card issues instead of EDD directly. One thing I wanted to add that might help others: when I called the BofA EDD customer service line at 1-866-692-9374, they were able to verify my identity using just my SSN and the address on file, even though it had been years since I used the card. They didn't ask for the old card number or anything like that, which was a huge relief. Also, for anyone else in this situation - I found out that you can actually request a temporary PIN reset over the phone once your new card arrives, which is helpful if you've forgotten your old PIN like I had. The whole process was way less complicated than I expected after reading all the horror stories online about EDD customer service. Hope this helps someone else who's stressing about this like we were!

Thank you so much for sharing your experience! It's really reassuring to know that Bank of America can verify identity with just SSN and address - I was worried they'd need the old card number or other details I don't have. The temporary PIN reset tip is super helpful too since I definitely don't remember my old PIN from 2020. It's such a relief to hear from someone else going through the same thing and that the process isn't as scary as it seems online. Really appreciate you taking the time to share these details!

I went through this exact same situation when I switched from unemployment to disability benefits in 2023! The panic is real when you see payments processed but can't access them. Just to echo what everyone else has said - definitely call Bank of America directly at 1-866-692-9374, NOT EDD. One additional tip that saved me time: when you call BofA, press option 2 for "lost or stolen card" right away instead of going through the main menu. It gets you to the right department faster. Also, they'll ask for the last 4 digits of your SSN and your ZIP code for verification - have those ready. The good news is that once you report the card lost, they'll cancel the old one immediately so no one else can use it if they found it. Your money is 100% safe in the account. I know waiting 7-10 days for the new card feels like forever when you need the money, but it's worth it to avoid the expedited shipping fee unless you absolutely have no other option. Hang in there - this is super common and you'll have your money soon! Hope your back surgery recovery goes smoothly.

This is exactly the kind of detailed advice I needed! Thank you for the tip about pressing option 2 right away - that could save so much time on hold. I have my SSN and ZIP ready to go for when I call tomorrow morning. It's really comforting to hear from so many people who've been through this exact situation. The waiting is definitely the hardest part, but knowing the money is safe makes it bearable. Really appreciate everyone sharing their experiences here!
