EDD SDI debit card expired - will they auto-send new one or do I need to call?

Got approved for disability last week (yay!!) but I just realized the Bank of America EDD debit card I have from my maternity leave in 2023 expired in March 2025. My claim was approved and shows 'paid' for the first certification period already, but I'm worried about where that money is going. Will they automatically send me a new card since mine is expired? Or do I need to call someone? I tried looking at the EDD website but couldn't find anything specific about expired cards. Anyone dealt with this before? I really need the money soon since my medical leave is unpaid by my employer.

thye don't automatically send u a new card. you gotta call the B of A EDD card number on the back of your old card. they'll send u a new one but it takes like 7-10 days to come in the mail. ur money still goes to the account but u can't access it till u get the new card

Thank you!! Just found the number - it's separate from the regular EDD number. I'll call them right away.

The funds are still being deposited into your account, but you'll need to request a replacement card. Call the Bank of America EDD card customer service at 1-866-692-9374 (that's the number on the back of your expired card). They'll verify your information and send a new card. You can also transfer the funds to your personal bank account through the Bank of America prepaid website if you've set up that feature before your card expired. That might be faster than waiting for the new card.

Oh I didn't know I could transfer it to my bank! I think I did set that up before, I'll check if I can still log in to the BofA site with my expired card info. Thank you!

I went through this exact situation in February! My card from 2022 was expired and EDD approved my new claim for carpal tunnel surgery. I panicked because I needed the money ASAP. I tried calling the BofA EDD card center for THREE DAYS and couldn't get through - busy signals, disconnects, and hours on hold. I finally found Claimyr (claimyr.com) through another forum - they got me connected to a BofA rep in about 20 minutes. The rep expedited my card and I had it in 3 days instead of waiting 10+ days. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ?si=1hcSq3KFtCr4oAmd Totally worth it because I needed my benefits immediately for rent.

@profile8 Yes, Claimyr is legitimate. Many disability claimants use it to get through to EDD when the phone lines are overwhelmed. It's especially useful for time-sensitive issues like card replacement or payment problems. While there is a fee, many people find it worth it when they need urgent access to their benefits.

I can confirm Claimyr works too. Used it last month when my doctor's office submitted the wrong dates on my medical certification and my payments stopped. Got through to EDD in like 15 minutes when I'd been trying for days on my own.

NOBODY at EDD tells you this but they're required to offer direct deposit now!!! I just started disability in March and set up direct deposit from the beginning. No more dealing with those awful BofA cards that always have issues. Ask about setting up direct deposit when you call them!

This is only partially correct. The direct deposit option for EDD SDI is being rolled out gradually in 2025. Not all claimants have access yet - it depends on your county and claim type. They're still using the BofA cards for many people until the system is fully implemented statewide.

When your Bank of America EDD debit card expires, funds will still be deposited to the account, but you need a new card to access them. Here's what to do: 1. Call B of A EDD Card Services: 1-866-692-9374 2. Request replacement card (standard delivery: 7-10 business days) 3. Ask for expedited delivery if needed (additional fee but arrives in 3 business days) 4. While waiting, you can transfer funds to your personal bank account if you previously linked accounts Keep your claim certification schedule on time while waiting for the new card. The money will be accessible once you activate your new card. Also, check if you're eligible for the new direct deposit option - they're gradually rolling it out to SDI claimants in 2025.

This is super helpful! I called and requested expedited delivery since I have bills due soon. They said my card would arrive by Friday. I also set up a transfer to my checking account for future payments. Thanks everyone for the quick help!

Just went through this same situation! My card expired in February and I was freaking out when my first SDI payment showed as "paid" but I couldn't access it. Called BofA EDD card services and they explained that even with an expired card, the funds still go into your account - you just can't withdraw them until you get a replacement card. Pro tip: if you're in a real financial bind while waiting for the new card, you can also visit any BofA branch with ID and they can help you access your funds or set up a temporary solution. Some branches are more helpful than others with EDD accounts though. Also make sure to update your address if you've moved since your last EDD claim - I almost had my replacement card sent to my old apartment!

That's a great tip about visiting the BofA branch! I didn't know they could help with temporary access. My address is still the same thankfully, but good reminder for others. It's such a relief to know the money doesn't just disappear when the card expires - I was really worried about that. Thanks for sharing your experience!

Had this exact same panic moment when my card expired last year! The good news is your money is safe - it's still going to your account even with an expired card. Here's what worked for me: - Called BofA EDD at 1-866-692-9374 (be patient, lines are busy) - Requested expedited shipping for $15 (totally worth it if you need money ASAP) - Got my new card in 3 business days instead of 10 While waiting, I was able to log into the BofA prepaid website and transfer some funds to my personal checking account. You might still be able to access the online portal even with an expired physical card if you remember your login info. Don't stress too much - this is super common and they deal with expired EDD cards all the time. Your disability payments won't be affected, just temporarily harder to access until you get the replacement card.

This is so reassuring to hear! I was really stressed thinking I might lose my first payment. The expedited shipping option sounds perfect - $15 is definitely worth it to get access to my benefits faster. I'll try logging into the BofA website too to see if I can transfer funds while I wait. Thanks for breaking down the whole process step by step!

I just went through this last month! Your money is definitely still being deposited - the expired card just blocks your access to it. I called the BofA EDD number (1-866-692-9374) and they sent a replacement card right away. One thing that really helped me was setting up text alerts through the BofA prepaid website before my card fully expired. Even though I couldn't use the physical card, I could still see when deposits hit my account, which gave me peace of mind while waiting for the new card. The whole process took about a week with regular shipping, but like others mentioned, you can pay for expedited delivery if you need it faster. Just make sure to activate your new card as soon as it arrives - that part is super important! Congrats on getting approved for SDI! The hardest part is behind you now.

Thank you for the encouragement and the tip about text alerts! I didn't think about setting those up but that would definitely help with peace of mind. I'm calling BofA today to get the replacement card process started. It's such a relief to know so many people have been through this same situation and that the money is safe. Really appreciate everyone sharing their experiences here - this community is amazing!

I'm dealing with this exact situation right now! My card expired in February and I was so worried when I saw my first payment marked as "paid" but couldn't access it. Called the BofA EDD number this morning and they confirmed the funds are safe in my account - just need to wait for the replacement card. The rep told me it's happening a lot lately because so many people are returning to disability claims after cards from 2022-2023 have expired. She said they're processing tons of replacement card requests right now. One helpful thing she mentioned - if you're really desperate for access to funds while waiting for the new card, you can sometimes get a temporary debit card issued at certain BofA branches, though not all locations offer this for EDD accounts. Might be worth calling ahead to ask if your local branch can help. Hope this helps ease some anxiety - sounds like we're all in the same boat with expired cards! The money is definitely there waiting for us.

Thanks for sharing this! It's really comforting to know I'm not the only one dealing with expired cards from old claims. I never thought about how many people would be in this same situation with cards from 2022-2023 expiring now. That's a great tip about calling BofA branches ahead of time to see if they can issue temporary cards - I might try that if the replacement takes too long to arrive. It's such a relief to hear from someone who just went through this today and got confirmation that the funds are safe!
