EDD Money Network debit card suddenly on hold - can't access funds from 2022
I've got a weird situation with my EDD debit card. I received it back in 2022 when I was laid off and qualified for benefits, but I never actually used the card since I found work pretty quickly. Now I'm in a tight spot financially (car repairs + medical bills) and remembered I had those funds just sitting there. When I tried using the card last week, Bank of America told me there's some kind of temporary hold on the account. I've called EDD like 15 times trying to find out what's going on but either get disconnected or stuck in an endless phone tree. Has anyone dealt with this? Do unused EDD funds expire? Do I need to request a new card? It's about $3,800 that would really help me right now!

Yikes, this happened to my cousin too! EDD/Bank of America puts holds on accounts that haven't been used for a long time. Pretty sure it's a security thing. Those funds should still be yours but you HAVE to talk to a live person at EDD to confirm your identity and get the hold removed. Good luck getting through though - took her like 3 days of constant calling 😖

•3 DAYS?!! I don't have time for that! Did your cousin eventually get access to her money or did they take it back?

EDD funds don't technically expire, but after 12 months of inactivity, B of A can place security holds on Money Network cards. This is different from the funds being returned to EDD, which happens after 3 years of complete inactivity. You absolutely need to speak with an EDD representative to verify your identity and release the funds. The quickest way to handle this would be to call EDD at 1-800-300-5616 exactly at 8:00 AM when they open. If you're struggling to get through, you might want to try Claimyr.com - it's a service that helps connect you directly with EDD agents instead of battling the phone system yourself. Here's a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km

After not using your card for so long, B of A automatically flags the account for security. Two things you need to do: 1. First check if your funds were returned to EDD by logging into UI Online and checking your payment history. If they show paid but you can't access them, the money is still there but the card is locked. 2. You MUST talk to EDD directly - not Bank of America. B of A will just tell you to contact EDD since they don't control the security holds. I went through this last year. After verifying your identity, they'll either reactivate your current card or send you a new one. The process took about 10 business days for me once I finally reached someone.

•Thank you! I checked UI Online and it does still show as paid out, so at least that's good news. Will try calling again tomorrow morning.

•Not helpful dude. The phone situation is frustrating for everyone, but there are strategies that work. Calling right at opening (8:00 AM) or just before lunch (11:30) tends to work better than other times. Also, Thursdays and Fridays generally have lower call volumes than Mondays and Tuesdays.

•That's a good point! I did move since I got the card. I'll make sure both addresses are updated.

I used Claimyr last month when I couldn't get through about my identity verification issue. It was worth it because I was spending hours trying to call EDD myself with no luck. They connected me to an agent in about 25 minutes who fixed my issue right away. Just sharing my experience since I know how frustrating the phone system can be.

•I've heard mixed things about third-party services, but honestly, with EDD's phone system being what it is, sometimes it's worth exploring alternatives. Just make sure you're using a legitimate service and not giving sensitive information to scammers.

The money is definately still yours! But EDD is THE WORST at customer service. I remember when I had a problem with my claim, I called 47 times in one day before getting through (yes I counted lol). If you do manage to reach someone, get their ID number or name so if you get disconnected you can reference who you were talking to.

UPDATE: Just wanted to let everyone know I FINALLY got through to EDD! Called right at 8:00am and only had to wait 45 minutes. The representative confirmed it was a security hold due to inactivity and my address change. They've removed the hold and I should have access to my funds within 24-48 hours. Thank you all for the help!

•Great news! Glad it worked out. For anyone else reading this thread in the future, this is a common issue with EDD debit cards that haven't been used for a long time. The funds don't expire, but security holds are automatically applied after extended periods of inactivity (usually 12+ months).

Awesome that you got it resolved! This is super helpful info for others who might run into the same situation. I had no idea that EDD/Bank of America automatically puts security holds on inactive cards after a year - seems like something they should notify people about. Definitely saving this thread in case I ever need to reference it. Glad you're getting access to your $3,800!

•You're so right about the notification issue! I think EDD should definitely send out some kind of warning before placing these holds. Like a 90-day notice or something so people don't get caught off guard when they actually need the money. Jackson's situation could have been avoided entirely with better communication from their end.

So glad you got this resolved! This thread is going to be super helpful for anyone else dealing with inactive EDD cards. It's crazy that they don't send any kind of heads up before placing these security holds - you'd think after spending so much on unemployment benefits, they'd want to make sure people can actually access their money when they need it. The 8am calling strategy seems to be the real MVP here. Thanks for updating us with the resolution!

•Totally agree! This whole thread should be pinned or something - so many people probably have old EDD cards sitting around not knowing this could happen. The fact that Jackson had to make 15+ calls just to find out it was a routine security hold is ridiculous. At minimum they should send an email or text before locking accounts. Really appreciate everyone sharing their experiences here, especially the timing tips for calling!

This is such valuable information! I actually have an old EDD card from 2021 that I never used because I got back to work quickly. After reading this thread, I'm definitely going to check my UI Online account to see if my funds are still showing as paid. It's honestly ridiculous that EDD doesn't send any kind of notification before placing these security holds - like why wouldn't they want people to know their money is still available? Thanks Jackson for sharing your experience and following up with the resolution. The 8am calling strategy and making sure your address is updated seem like key takeaways here!

•Definitely check your UI Online account ASAP! I'm in a similar boat - got an EDD card in early 2022 but went back to work before using it. This thread is making me realize I should probably call EDD proactively to make sure everything's still accessible rather than waiting until I actually need the money. It's so frustrating that they don't have any kind of automated system to send reminders about inactive accounts. Thanks everyone for sharing all these helpful tips!
