EDD debit card expired - how to access SDI payments already issued?

Just got approved for SDI after waiting FOREVER (almost 6 weeks!!). I can see on the EDD website that they've already issued two payments to me totaling $2,850, but my EDD Bank of America debit card expired months ago and I have no idea how to access the money. I don't even know if they're sending a new card automatically or if I need to request one. Has anyone dealt with this recently? The money is already showing as 'paid' on my account but I can't access it. I've been calling both EDD and BofA for 3 days but can't get through to a real person. Getting desperate as my rent is due next week!

Thanks! I've been calling that number but it just puts me in an endless loop of automated options. Did you have to call multiple times to get through?

This happened to me last year. You definitely need to contact Bank of America EDD card services, not regular BofA customer service. If your card is expired, they won't automatically send a new one unless you request it. The good news is your funds are secure and waiting for you - they don't expire with the card. When you call, select the option for "lost or stolen card" even though it's just expired. That sometimes gets you through to a person faster. You'll need to verify your identity, and they'll send a replacement card which usually takes 7-10 business days. If you're desperate to access the money faster, when you speak with a representative, ask if they can expedite the shipping of your new card. I believe there's a $10 fee, but they can get it to you in about 3 business days.

This is all correct, but I'd add that you should also make sure your mailing address is current with BofA EDD card services. I had an expired card situation and they had my old address, which caused even more delays getting the new card.

Exactly! EDD says call BofA, BofA says they can't help with claim issues... it's a nightmare loop.

I had this EXACT same problem in January! Calling BofA EDD card services is almost impossible these days. After trying for over a week, I used Claimyr (claimyr.com) to connect with BofA EDD card services and got through in about 20 minutes. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ?si=1hcSq3KFtCr4oAmd Once I got through, the BofA rep expedited my new card (arrived in 3 days) and I was able to set up direct deposit for future payments so I never have to deal with the card again. Hope this helps!

Thank you! I'll check out that service. Did you have to set up direct deposit through BofA or through EDD? I'd rather just have everything go straight to my regular bank account.

You set up the direct deposit through BofA's EDD card services once you have access to your card account. You can't do it through EDD directly. You'll need to activate your new card first, then log into the prepaid card website to set up the direct deposit to your personal bank account.

Let me clarify something important that others haven't mentioned. There are two separate systems working here: 1. EDD approves your disability claim and issues payments 2. Bank of America handles the delivery of those payments via the EDD debit card Your money is safe and waiting for you - EDD has already processed your claim and issued the payments. Now it's strictly a Bank of America issue to get your new card. For expired cards, you must call Bank of America EDD card services at 1-866-692-9374. Select option 2 for "lost or stolen card" (this works for expired cards too). You'll need to verify your identity with your SSN and some other information. They'll deactivate your old card and send a new one. Standard delivery is 7-10 business days, but you can pay $10 for expedited 3-day delivery. Once you have your new card, I highly recommend setting up direct deposit to your personal bank account for all future payments - this way you won't have to worry about expired cards again. Also, make sure your address is current with both EDD and Bank of America. They're separate systems and updating one doesn't update the other.

Thank you for the detailed explanation! I'll try the option 2 trick tomorrow. Do you know if there's any way to update my address with BofA if I can't access the online account because my card is expired?

Yes, when you get through to a Bank of America representative on the phone, they can update your address during that same call. Just make sure to have your identity verification information ready (SSN, date of birth, etc.). They'll update your address in their system before sending the new card.

Unfortunately, regular Bank of America branches can't help with EDD debit cards. The EDD debit card program is handled by a separate division of Bank of America, and regular branch employees don't have access to that system. They'll just direct you to call the EDD card services number.

UPDATE: I finally got through to BofA EDD card services! For anyone with the same problem, here's what worked: 1. I used the Claimyr service that someone recommended above - got connected in about 25 minutes instead of endless busy signals 2. Selected option 2 for "lost or stolen card" even though mine was just expired 3. Had to verify my identity (SSN, address, date of birth) 4. They're sending me a new card via expedited shipping (paid $10 for 3-day delivery) 5. Set up direct deposit for future payments so I won't have this problem again The rep confirmed my funds are safe and will be available once I activate the new card. Thanks everyone for your help!

Glad it worked out! Setting up that direct deposit is definitely the way to go. One more tip - once you get your card and transfer the money to your bank, I recommend keeping the card in a safe place even if you're using direct deposit. Sometimes there can be retroactive payments or adjustments that might still go to the card.

That's great advice - I'll definitely keep the card safe. Thank you again!

Great to see you got it resolved! For future reference to anyone else reading this thread, I want to emphasize that the direct deposit setup is crucial. I've been on SDI for over a year now and switched to direct deposit after my first card expired. It's been so much smoother - payments go straight to my checking account within 1-2 business days of being issued by EDD. Also, keep in mind that if you ever need to update your direct deposit information, you have to do it through the BofA EDD card website, not through EDD directly. The systems don't communicate with each other, which is confusing but important to remember. Hope your situation stays smooth from here on out!

This is really helpful information! I'm new to this whole SDI process and didn't realize that EDD and Bank of America have completely separate systems. That explains so much of the confusion I've been seeing in these posts. Quick question - when you set up direct deposit through the BofA EDD card website, do you need to have the physical card in hand first, or can you do it online with just your account information once the card is activated?
