EDD SDI prepaid debit card nightmare - payments received but no access! Need Bank of America EDD card number ASAP

I'm in a super frustrating situation with my disability payments. After being on SDI for 3 months, my claim was suddenly terminated in January even though my doctor submitted all the required paperwork. Filed an appeal immediately and FINALLY won last week (took forever!). The good news: they approved all my backpay from the missed weeks. The bad news: I can't access a single cent of it! When my claim was initially closed/denied, my BofA EDD debit card account was deactivated. Now that the appeal went through and funds were deposited, I have no way to access the money because my old card doesn't work and they haven't sent a new one. I've tried calling EDD approximately 47 times in the past 3 days (not exaggerating) and either get a busy signal or the automated message tells me they're too busy and hangs up. Does anyone have the direct number for the Bank of America EDD debit card customer service? I'm thinking they might be able to help faster than waiting for EDD to pick up. I've got rent due next week and was counting on these disability payments to cover it. Any help would be seriously appreciated!

The BofA EDD card number is 1-866-692-9374. They're actually not too bad to reach, you usually don't have to wait too long. Just make sure you have your SSN and all that ready to verify your identity.

I've been through this exact mess before with my SDI claim. The issue is that when claims are terminated, the BofA EDD card system automatically deactivates access, but when appeals are approved, the reactivation process isn't automatic. You actually need to contact both EDD and BofA. Here's what worked for me: 1. First call BofA EDD department (1-866-692-9374) and explain that your appeal was approved. They'll likely tell you your account is inactive in their system. 2. Then you MUST get through to EDD so they can send the reactivation authorization to BofA. This is the critical step. 3. BofA can expedite a new card to you (2-3 business days) once EDD reactivates your account, but they can't do anything until EDD sends them the authorization. The EDD phone system is completely overwhelmed right now. I literally spent 4 days trying to get through before I found a service called Claimyr. It basically holds your place in line and calls you back when an EDD rep is available. Costs money but was worth every penny to finally get this resolved. Their website is claimyr.com and they have a video that shows how it works: https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ?si=1hcSq3KFtCr4oAmd Good luck - definitely sucks to have your money but no access to it!

This is SO helpful, thank you! Just called BofA and you're exactly right - they said my account is inactive and EDD needs to send the authorization. I'll check out that Claimyr service because I'm desperate at this point. Really appreciate the detailed info.

THE WHOLE SYSTEM IS BROKEN BY DESIGN!!! They WANT you to give up so they can keep your money. I went through similar BS with my disability claim last year. They denied it for no reason, then approved my appeal but conveniently "forgot" to reactivate my card access. It's all intentional to make people so frustrated they give up. DOCUMENT EVERYTHING. Get names of everyone you talk to. Request supervisor ID numbers. The moment you mention "formal complaint" and "state representative" they suddenly find solutions. FIGHT THEM!!

Calm down, it's not a conspiracy. The EDD system is just outdated and overwhelmed. They're not trying to steal anyone's money.

That's what they WANT you to think! Why would a "computer glitch" ALWAYS benefit them and never the claimant? Wake up!

This is a common issue with SDI appeals. There's a technical disconnect between the appeal approval system and the payment distribution system. When your appeal is approved, the SDI claims processing team updates your claim status, but there's a separate step required to reactivate your BofA account access. Specifically, you need to contact the EDD Benefits Overpayment and Appeals Section at 1-800-300-5616. Make sure to have your appeal case number ready (should be on your approval notice). Tell them you need a "debit card reactivation authorization" sent to Bank of America. Once they process this (usually takes 24-48 hours), then contact BofA to either reactivate your existing card or request a new one. If your situation is urgent (sounds like it is with rent due), ask EDD about the option for a direct deposit override. In some cases, they can temporarily switch your payment method to direct deposit while waiting for the new card.

Thank you for the specific information! I didn't know about the direct deposit override option - that would be amazing if possible since rent is due soon. Will definitely ask about that specifically when I get through.

Unfortunately, regular BofA branches cannot help with EDD debit card issues. The EDD cards are managed by a completely separate department that regular branch employees don't have access to. You must call the dedicated EDD card customer service line.

oh weird cause they helped me last year maybe they changed it

I just went through this exact situation in February! It was such a headache. After my SDI appeal was approved, I had to wait 10 business days for them to send a new card. I tried calling to expedite but they said appeals cases require a new card to be issued and they couldn't rush it. What I ended up doing was getting through to an EDD representative who helped process an emergency payment. They can actually issue a paper check in hardship situations that you can pick up at an EDD office. It's not widely advertised but it exists if you're in a dire situation with rent coming up. Do you have a disability case manager assigned to your appeal? If so, try contacting them directly rather than the main EDD line. They sometimes have direct lines that bypass the general queue.

I had no idea about the emergency payment option - that's really good to know! My appeal paperwork doesn't mention a specific case manager, just has the general appeal board contact info. But I'll definitely ask about the emergency payment when I get through. Thanks for the tip!

UPDATE: Finally got this resolved! Used the Claimyr service someone recommended here to get through to EDD (took about 45 minutes instead of days of calling). The EDD rep confirmed they needed to send authorization to BofA, which they did while I was on the phone. Then called BofA, who verified they received the authorization and are expediting a new card to me (should arrive in 3 business days). For anyone else facing this issue, the key really is getting through to EDD - they have to initiate the reactivation process with BofA. Thank you everyone for your help and suggestions!
