SDI payment delays after approval - 3 months with no money despite daily calls

I'm at my wits' end with EDD!!! Had major back surgery in January 2025 and filed for SDI right away. My claim was APPROVED in February and I can see my weekly benefit amount ($1,450) in the portal, but I HAVEN'T RECEIVED A SINGLE PAYMENT YET!! It's now been over 3 months and I'm owed nearly $18,500! My savings are completely gone and I'm borrowing money from family just to pay rent. I've tried literally EVERYTHING to contact them: - Called the main SDI number at least 50 times (different times of day) - Sent messages through SDI Online every other day - Used the "Contact EDD" form repeatedly - Even had my doctor's office try calling on my behalf Every single time I call, it's that same automated message about "high call volume" and then it disconnects me! I've tried calling at 8:01am, midday, 4:55pm - nothing works. The online messages just get generic automated responses saying my "inquiry has been received." My doctor confirmed all medical certifications are properly submitted. The claim shows as active and approved online. I can't return to work until at least May (per surgeon's orders). HOW do I actually talk to a real person at EDD to find out why my payments are stuck? I'm desperate and about to lose my apartment!!

omg this happened to my cousin too!! his claim was approved but no $$ for like 2 months. he kept calling and calling and nothing. idk why they approve people but then dont actually pay them?? makes no sense

Did your cousin ever get his payments? What finally worked for him? I'm getting so desperate I'm considering driving to an actual EDD office even though I know they don't handle SDI there!

This is a frustratingly common issue with SDI right now. When your claim shows approved but payments don't process, it's usually because there's a hidden flag on your account that requires manual review by an SDI representative. The most common reasons are: 1) Identity verification issue 2) Wage discrepancy between what you reported and employer records 3) Previous claim overlap 4) System glitch in the payment processing module Unfortunately, you're right that getting through on the phone is nearly impossible using the standard method. The SDI system is severely understaffed since they cut personnel after the pandemic surge.

Thank you for explaining this! Do you know if there's any way to check if there's a flag on my account? Nothing in my SDI Online account shows any issues or required actions. It just says approved with my weekly benefit amount calculated.

Have you tried faxing them? I know it sounds ridiculous in 2025 but when I had a similar issue last summer, sending a fax to the SDI office actually got me a callback within 3 days. I found the fax number buried on their website somewhere.

I didn't even think about faxing them! That's a good idea - do you still have the fax number by any chance? I'll try anything at this point!

After dealing with the same nightmare scenario (approved but no payment for weeks), I finally used Claimyr and it was a LIFESAVER. It's this service that gets you through to an actual EDD/SDI representative without the endless calling. Costs money but it connected me to an agent in about 20 minutes after I'd wasted WEEKS trying on my own. The agent fixed my payment issue while I was on the phone with them. You can see how it works at https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ?si=1hcSq3KFtCr4oAmd or their website claimyr.com. Seriously worth it when you're owed thousands and can't get through.

i heard about those services but wasn't sure if they actually work. seems kinda messed up that we have to PAY just to talk to EDD when its their job to help us? but i guess if your missing thousands in benefits its worth it

One more thing to try: contact your state assembly member's office. Their constituent services team can often intervene with EDD on your behalf. I've seen them resolve payment issues when people couldn't get through themselves. Just Google "[your city] state assembly member" and their office will have a constituent services request form on their website.

That's brilliant! I hadn't thought about contacting my assembly member. I'll try that route as well as the other suggestions here. I'm willing to try multiple approaches at this point since I desperately need this resolved.

I had this EXACT problem early this year. What eventually worked was sending a message through SDI Online specifically using these words in the subject line: "URGENT: APPROVED CLAIM WITH NO PAYMENT FOR [X] WEEKS" and in the message I explained I had medical bills piling up and was facing eviction. Got a call back within 48 hours. The rep said using "URGENT" flags it differently in their system. Also make sure you've completed ALL certifications - sometimes there's one hiding in the system that's not obvious.

Thank you! I'll try sending another message with URGENT in the subject line today. And I double-checked my certifications yesterday - they all show as submitted and complete, which makes this even more frustrating. At least I know I'm not alone in experiencing this issue.

THE EDD SYSTEM IS COMPLETELY BROKEN!!!! I went through the same thing last year and almost lost my house waiting for payments they ALREADY APPROVED. They expect disabled people to somehow survive with NO INCOME while they sit on approved claims?? It's criminal! I finally got through after 3 months of calling, and you know what they said? "Oh there was a note needed in your file" - A NOTE!!! 3 MONTHS OF NO MONEY BECAUSE OF A STUPID NOTE!!! The whole system needs to be scrapped and rebuilt!

This exact thing happened to my neighbor! She was approved but the payments were held because they needed to "verify" something minor. Took them 8 weeks to "verify" while she couldn't pay her bills. The system is designed to make people give up.

UPDATE: I tried several of your suggestions! Used Claimyr this morning and actually got through to a real person after 25 minutes (compared to weeks of failed calls). The agent said there was a "payment verification flag" on my account due to a mismatch between my last employer's wage report and my claim. She removed the flag while I was on the phone and said I should receive ALL my back payments within 5-7 business days! I'm cautiously optimistic but this is the first real progress in months. Will update again when/if the money hits my account. Thank you all for the helpful advice!

That's excellent news! The "payment verification flag" is exactly what I suspected - it's one of those hidden status issues that doesn't show up in your online portal but prevents payments from processing. So glad you were able to get it resolved. Make sure to keep documentation of the call (date, time, rep name if possible) just in case there are any further delays.
