EDD maternity payments going to old UI BofA card despite selecting 'EDD Debit Card' option?

I'm really confused about where my maternity leave payments will be deposited! I was on unemployment back in 2020 and received payments on my Bank of America EDD debit card. Now I'm on maternity leave (started SDI last month, will transition to PFL for baby bonding soon) and when I filled out my disability claim, I'm 99% sure I selected "EDD Debit Card" as my preferred payment method. My question is - will my maternity benefits automatically go to that same old BofA account/card from 2020? I can't find the card anywhere and don't remember if it's even still valid! I tried calling EDD but after 2 hours on hold I gave up. Has anyone dealt with this situation before? Will they issue a new card or use the old one?

Yes, your payments will go to that same BofA account if you selected the debit card option. The accounts stay active for 3 years after the last deposit, so your 2020 card might have expired. You can call Bank of America EDD card services directly at 1-866-692-9374 to check if your card is still active and request a replacement if needed. That's so much easier than trying to reach EDD directly.

Thank you! That's actually really helpful. I didn't know we could call BofA directly about this. I'll try that number tomorrow. Do you know if there's a way to switch my payment method to direct deposit instead? I'd rather just have it go to my checking account.

Not always true! My sister kept getting her payments on her old card from her UI claim in 2021. Ended up with like $3k on a card she thought was inactive! Always check both possibilities!!!

The correct answer is: it depends on when you last used the card. If your BoA EDD card is still active (not expired), payments will go to that same card. If the card has expired, BoA will automatically issue you a new one when EDD makes your first payment. To change to direct deposit, you would need to update your payment preference in your SDI Online account. Go to your claim details and look for "Payment Method." However, if your first payment has already been processed for the debit card, all subsequent payments for this claim will continue to go to the card - you can't change mid-claim. The best approach is to: 1. Call BoA EDD card services as the previous commenter suggested 2. Check if your card is active 3. Request a replacement if needed 4. For your PFL claim (baby bonding), make sure to select direct deposit when you file that new claim if that's your preference

Oh wow, I didn't realize I couldn't change it mid-claim! I already received my first payment but haven't received any card. So it sounds like I need to call BofA ASAP. Thanks for the detailed info. I'll definitely choose direct deposit when I file for PFL.

When I had my baby last year I had the EXACT same situation! Had UI in 2020, then SDI/PFL in 2024. My old card was LONG gone lol. BofA sent me a new card automatically but it took FOREVER (like 3 weeks after my first payment was issued). I was panicking about bills the whole time. Try calling BofA directly like others suggested.

Did you know you can use Claimyr to get through to an EDD agent without the crazy wait times? It's what saved me when dealing with my maternity leave payment issues. The service connects you to an EDD agent usually within 15 minutes instead of waiting hours. I was so desperate when my payments were delayed that I tried it and honestly it was worth it. Their website is claimyr.com and they have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/DOLxZQb92wM?si=6N1iCQ3a8Cdb2Ay5

This is why the EDD system is SO FRUSTRATING. They make nothing clear about how payment methods work between different benefit programs. I've gone through UI → SDI → PFL → UI again over the past 5 years and here's what I've learned: 1. Their systems DON'T talk to each other well between UI and SDI/PFL 2. You CAN'T change payment methods mid-claim period 3. BofA cards stay active for 3 years but the physical card expires sooner 4. Even if you request direct deposit, they SOMETIMES default back to the card The BEST advice is to call BofA directly AND try to get through to EDD to confirm. I know that's not easy, but it's the only way to be 100% sure. The number of times I've had to chase down payments...

Ugh, this is so frustrating! I hate that these systems don't communicate with each other properly. I'll definitely call BofA tomorrow. Thanks for sharing your experience!

Anyone notice how weird it is that EDD still uses Bank of America for this stuff? My friend in Nevada gets her unemployment on a different bank card. Wonder why California sticks with BofA.

Just to give you the most current information - I confirmed with EDD last month that they are planning to switch from Bank of America to a new provider for debit cards sometime in early 2026. But for now, all SDI and PFL payments still go through BofA if you select the debit card option. As others mentioned, if your card is expired, Bank of America will automatically send you a new one when your first payment is issued. This typically takes 7-10 business days, though some people have reported delays. If you're really concerned, you can also check your payment status through your SDI Online account. Once it shows "Paid" with an amount and date, you know the money has been sent to BofA.

Thank you! I just checked my SDI Online account and it does show my first payment as "Paid" from last week. But I still haven't received a new card... I'll definitely call BofA tomorrow. Really appreciate all this helpful info from everyone!
