Will my SDI pregnancy benefits come on old EDD unemployment card from 2020?
I'm 7 months pregnant and just filed for SDI pregnancy disability last week. Back in 2020, I received unemployment benefits on an EDD debit card, but I have NO idea where that card is now (probably lost during our move last year). Will my pregnancy disability payments automatically go to that same old card? Do I need to request a new one? I'm panicking a little because my doctor is taking me off work in 2 weeks, and I need to make sure I can access my benefits! The EDD website wasn't clear about this and I can't get through on the phone.

Yes, EDD will use your old card if you still have an open Bank of America EDD account. If you can't find your card, you should call Bank of America EDD customer service at 1-866-692-9374 to request a replacement ASAP. That's separate from EDD itself. I just went through this with my pregnancy disability claim in January, and it took about 10 business days to get my new card. Do this now before your benefits start!

•Thank you so much! I didn't realize B of A was separate from EDD for this. I'll call them today to get a replacement card ordered.

•Oh really? It's been about 4.5 years since I used mine. Maybe they'll automatically send a new one then? I'm still going to call to make sure.

Actually, the EDD has changed their payment system since 2020. They're moving away from the Bank of America debit cards to a new system called "Direct Deposit or Check" where you choose how to receive your benefits during the application process. Did you select a payment preference when you filed your SDI claim? If you chose direct deposit, they'll send the money to your bank account. If you chose check, they'll mail you paper checks. If you didn't select a preference or can't remember, call EDD right away to confirm how your payments will be issued. This change started in July 2023 and has been rolling out to different benefit types.

•Oh no! I don't remember selecting anything about payment preferences when I filed! The online system was confusing and I was mostly focused on getting all my medical info entered correctly. Now I'm really worried.

If you're struggling to get through to EDD about your payment preference, I strongly recommend using Claimyr. I was in the exact same situation (pregnant, confused about payments, couldn't reach anyone). Claimyr got me connected to an actual EDD representative in 15 minutes after I'd spent DAYS trying to get through on my own. They have a video demo that shows exactly how it works: https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ?si=1hcSq3KFtCr4oAmd. Their website is claimyr.com - completely worth it to avoid the stress, especially when you're pregnant and don't need the added anxiety!

•Thank you for this suggestion! I'm definitely feeling the stress and don't need more anxiety right now. I'll check out that video and probably try their service if I can't get through tomorrow.

Everyone here is giving you conflicting information because the payment system is currently in transition. Here are the facts: 1. The EDD is phasing out Bank of America debit cards for NEW claims 2. SDI pregnancy claims filed after 7/14/2023 should get either direct deposit or paper checks (not debit cards) 3. BUT, if you didn't select a payment preference when you filed, the system defaults to the last payment method on record 4. If your last payment was to a BofA card in 2020, they MIGHT try to send it there first Your best option is to log into your SDI Online account, go to 'Payment Method' and verify what's showing. If you don't see a payment preference selected, call EDD immediately to update it, preferably to direct deposit for fastest payment. If the system is showing BofA as your payment method, then yes, you'll need to contact BofA for a replacement card at 1-866-692-9374.

•^^^ this is correct. I work for a disability attorney and this matches what we're seeing with our clients. The transition has been very messy and confusing!

•Thank you for this detailed breakdown! I just checked my SDI Online account and there's nothing showing under payment method that I can find. This is so frustrating. I'm going to try calling EDD first thing tomorrow morning.

UPDATE: I finally got through to EDD this morning! Turns out since I didn't select a payment preference when filing, they defaulted to a paper check for the first payment. The rep helped me set up direct deposit for future payments. She also said my claim has been approved and I should get my first check within 7-10 days. Thanks everyone for your help!
