EDD approved both my UI and SDI claims - pregnant and confused about benefit overlap

I'm in a weird situation and could use some help figuring out what to do. I lost my job back in February and finally got my unemployment claim approved two weeks ago. I requested backdating to March (I've been living off savings until now), and I've been getting certification notices for March through mid-June. Here's where it gets complicated - I'm 8 months pregnant and my doctor filed for SDI on my behalf starting June 15th due to pregnancy complications. That claim ALSO just got approved! I know you can't collect both benefits simultaneously, but I'm not sure what to do now. Do I need to call EDD to put my unemployment on hold? Will my backdated UI payments still come through for March-June 14th? And will the SDI payments go to the same EDD debit card, or do they use a different payment method? I'm stressing about this because I need to get my finances sorted before the baby comes (only 2-3 weeks left!). Any advice from someone who's navigated both systems would be super helpful!

congrats on both approvals and the baby! you definitely cant get both at same time. u need to stop certifying for UI once your SDI starts. the backpay for UI should still come thru for before your SDI started tho. not sure about the card thing

Thanks! When you say stop certifying, should I just not fill out the forms when they come, or do I need to formally notify EDD that I'm switching to SDI?

Congratulations on your pregnancy! You're correct that you cannot receive UI and SDI benefits for the same period. Here's what you need to do: 1. You don't need to call EDD to postpone your UI benefits. Simply stop certifying for UI as of the date your SDI began (June 15th). 2. Your backdated UI payments for March through June 14th should still process normally since they're for periods before your SDI eligibility began. 3. Regarding payment methods: UI benefits typically come on an EDD Debit Card (Money Network card), while SDI benefits can either be delivered the same way OR through direct deposit, depending on what you selected when you applied. If you didn't specifically set up direct deposit for SDI, then yes, both payments will go to the same card. Make sure to keep records of your last UI certification date and your first SDI payment date to avoid any potential overpayment issues later.

Thank you so much for the detailed info! I didn't realize I could just stop certifying rather than formally notifying them. And good to know about the payment methods - I didn't set up direct deposit so I guess everything will go to the same card. I'll definitely keep careful records of all the dates.

I went through something kinda similar last year!!! except my UI ran out first THEN i got pregnant and went on SDI. The money does go on the same card!! But the amounts r different and SDI pays more cuz its based on ur highest quarter earnings not ur weekly benefit or something. Just dont certify for UI once ur SDI kicks in or you'll get an overpayment notice and those are a NIGHTMARE to fix trust me lol

Oh that's good to know about the payment amounts being different! And thanks for the warning about overpayments - definitely want to avoid that headache right when the baby arrives!

I worked at EDD for 5 years as a claims specialist. Here's the accurate information: 1. For the period where your benefits overlap (after June 15th), SDI takes precedence over UI. You should not certify for UI for any weeks after your SDI eligibility began. 2. For backdated UI benefits (March through June 14th), you're still eligible and should receive those payments. The system may require you to certify for those weeks in chronological order before it processes payment. 3. Payment method: Both UI and SDI benefits are issued on the same Money Network debit card. If you already have one from previous benefits, they'll use the same card. If you don't, you'll receive one in the mail. 4. Documentation: Keep screenshots of your UI claim history and your SDI award notice. If there's any confusion or overpayment notice later, you'll need these to show you didn't double-dip benefits. Lastly, SDI pregnancy claims typically run up to 4 weeks before your due date and 6-8 weeks after delivery (longer for C-sections). After SDI expires, you may be eligible for Paid Family Leave (PFL) for bonding time.

Thank you so much for such comprehensive information! This clarifies everything. I'll make sure to certify for the backdate periods but stop once I hit June 15th. And thanks for the heads up about PFL after the SDI period - I hadn't even thought that far ahead yet!

THIS SYSTEM IS A JOKE!!! I had both UI and SDI last yr and EDD messed up EVERYTHING! Took them 5 MONTHS to sort out the mess they created. They kept telling me different things every time I called. Good luck getting anyone on the phone who actually knows what theyre talking about!!! just be prepared for a nightmare of paperwork

Oh no, that sounds awful! Did you end up getting all your payments sorted eventually? Anything specific I should watch out for to avoid the same issues?

yeah i got it fixed but only after filing an appeal and sending like 20 messages through the portal. KEEP RECORDS OF EVERYTHING!!! dates, confirmation numbers, who u talked to. and screenshot the weeks u certify for UI!

I struggled for weeks trying to get through to EDD about a similar situation (UI to SDI transition). I was getting nowhere until I tried a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com). They got me connected to a real EDD rep in less than 30 minutes when I'd been trying for days on my own. Their video demo shows how it works: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km The rep I spoke with confirmed exactly what others are saying here - stop certifying for UI once SDI begins, but continue to certify for the backdated weeks. They also confirmed both payments go to the same Money Network card. The peace of mind from getting official confirmation was worth it for me.

Thanks for the suggestion! I might check that out if I run into problems. Right now I'm going to try following everyone's advice about just stopping certification after June 15th and see if things process correctly, but good to know there's a way to get through if I need to talk to someone.

Is anybody 100% sure the payments go on the same card? My cousin got UI then SDI and swears she got a separate card for SDI. This was in 2024 though, maybe they changed the system? Just don't want OP to miss any payments looking for money on the wrong card...

The standard procedure is to use the same Money Network card for both UI and SDI benefits. However, there are a few specific situations where a claimant might receive a second card: 1. If the first card was reported lost/stolen 2. If the first card expired 3. If there was a name change on the account 4. If there was a very long gap between benefit programs For most claimants transitioning directly from UI to SDI (or vice versa), payments will continue on the same card. Your cousin may have fallen into one of the exception categories.

That makes sense! She did have like a 6 month gap between UI ending and SDI starting, so probably why she got 2 cards.

Update: I want to thank everyone for the helpful advice! I called EDD this morning and confirmed what most of you said - I should continue certifying for the backdated UI weeks before June 15th, but not certify for any weeks after SDI started. They said the payments will all go to the same Money Network card, and my backdated UI should process within 10 days. The rep also mentioned I should apply for Paid Family Leave after my SDI pregnancy benefits end, which will give me additional time for baby bonding. I feel much less stressed now knowing what to do. Thanks again to everyone who shared their experiences and advice!

That's excellent news! So glad you were able to get confirmation directly from EDD. Make sure to mark your calendar for when to apply for PFL - typically you should submit that application about 1-2 weeks before your SDI benefits end to avoid any gap in payments. Wishing you a smooth delivery and healthy baby!
