Switching from UI to SDI for pregnancy - Do I need to close my unemployment claim?

I'm currently collecting unemployment benefits, but my doctor just put me on bedrest for my pregnancy (31 weeks and having early contractions). I need to apply for SDI asap, but I'm confused about what happens with my UI claim. Do I need to formally close my unemployment claim before applying for disability? Will applying for SDI automatically stop my UI payments? I'm worried about potentially having overlapping benefits and getting in trouble. Has anyone gone through this transition from UI to pregnancy disability? Any advice would be super helpful because I'm stressing about accidentally doing something wrong!

u have to stop certifying for UI when u start SDI. they dont auto stop it. if u get both at same time EDD will make u pay back $ later!!

Thanks! So I just stop certifying for UI the week I file for SDI? I don't need to call or formally close anything with unemployment?

You need to handle this carefully to avoid benefit overlap issues. Here's what you should do: 1. Stop certifying for UI the day before your disability begins 2. File your SDI claim with your doctor's certification 3. Note on your SDI application that you were receiving UI benefits 4. Keep documentation of your last UI payment date You don't need to formally close your UI claim, but you absolutely cannot receive both benefits for the same period. The system won't automatically catch this until later, which is why people sometimes end up with overpayments and penalties.

Omg thank you so much! This is exactly what I needed to know. I was so worried about doing it wrong. My doctor is filling out the medical certification tomorrow, so I'll stop certifying for UI immediately before that.

I just went through this last year!! Make sure you write down your last UI payment date and keep any confirmation emails. When I switched from UI to pregnancy disability, they actually overpaid me and it was a NIGHTMARE to fix. Took like 2 months to sort out.

THIS!! EDD system is so broken. I had same issue and they came after me for $1,200 in "overpayment" even though I did everything right. Had to talk to THREE different reps to fix it and each one told me something completely different!!

wait are you sure you can even get SDI while pregnant? i thought that was Paid Family Leave which is different?? when my cousin was pregnant last year she had to wait until after delivery to get benefits.

You're mixing up two different benefits. Pregnancy-related disability (SDI) can be claimed before birth if you're unable to work due to your pregnancy (like OP's doctor-ordered bed rest). This typically covers up to 4 weeks before delivery and 6-8 weeks after. Paid Family Leave (PFL) is the benefit that allows bonding time with a new child, which would start after the SDI pregnancy disability period ends. They're separate programs but both administered through EDD.

When I needed to reach EDD about a similar situation (transitioning between benefits), I spent DAYS trying to get through on the phone. I finally used a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me connected to an actual EDD representative in about 20 minutes. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ?si=1hcSq3KFtCr4oAmd The agent I spoke with confirmed exactly what others are saying here - you need to stop UI certification before your SDI claim begins. The rep also made a note on my account about the transition to help prevent problems later.

Thank you for this tip! If I run into any issues with the transition I'll definitely check out that service. The thought of spending hours trying to get through to EDD while on bedrest sounds horrible.

I'm actually going through this exact situation right now!! I was on UI and my doctor put me on bedrest at 28 weeks (I'm 32 weeks now). Here's what I learned the hard way: - Don't certify for UI for ANY weeks where you'll be claiming SDI - There's a 7-day waiting period for SDI where you get no benefits from either program 😠 - Your weekly benefit amount might be different between UI and SDI - Make sure your doctor fills out the medical certification form COMPLETELY - mine missed a field and it delayed everything by 10 days Also, congrats on your pregnancy! Hope your bed rest goes smoothly and baby stays put a bit longer! ❤️

Thank you SO much for all this info! I totally forgot about the 7-day waiting period - that's really helpful to know. And congrats on your pregnancy too! How are you holding up on bedrest? It's only been two days for me and I'm already going stir-crazy.

my sister had this happen and they paid her both UI and SDI for like 3 weeks by accident and then she got this scary letter about fraud!! make sure u keep good records of everything!!

Something else I just thought of - make SURE you certify for your UI correctly for the last period. If your SDI starts mid-week, you need to report that you were unable to work for those days on your UI certification. Don't claim availability for work on days your doctor has certified you as disabled. That's considered misrepresentation and can cause big problems.

Oh wow, that's a really good point! My bedrest started on Wednesday, so I'll make sure to mark that I was unavailable starting that day when I do my final UI certification. Thank you!

Just wanted to add one more thing that might help - when you file your SDI claim online, there's a section where you can indicate that you were previously receiving other state benefits. Make sure to check that box and specify UI benefits. This creates a paper trail that shows you were transparent about the transition, which can help protect you if there are any questions later. Also, if you're planning to return to work after your pregnancy disability period ends, your UI claim should still be there waiting for you (assuming you still have benefit weeks remaining and meet eligibility requirements). You don't lose your UI claim by switching to SDI temporarily. Good luck with everything, and take care of yourself during this bedrest period! 💜
