Can I get EDD SDI benefits after being on unemployment while pregnant and in school?

I'm currently collecting unemployment benefits but I'm 6 months pregnant and just enrolled in a vocational program (it's free, no financial aid). I'm confused about what I should do with my EDD account. Should I update my UI claim to show I'm in school? Will this affect my benefits? I'm planning to apply for pregnancy disability when I'm closer to my due date (about 3 months from now). Does anyone know if being in school will help or hurt my chances of transitioning from unemployment to disability benefits? I'm worried about losing my UI now but also want to make sure I qualify for SDI when the time comes. Any advice is appreciated!

you need to report the school to UI right away. not doing it is fraud and theyll make u pay everything back. BUT being in school has nothing to do with SDI pregnancy disability. those r totally different programs.

Thank you! I'll update my UI claim right away. So the school thing won't affect my SDI application when I get closer to my due date?

You're dealing with two separate EDD programs here, and it's important to understand how they work together: 1. For Unemployment Insurance (UI): You must report that you're attending school. However, as long as you remain able and available for work and are actively seeking employment, you may still qualify for UI benefits. The key question EDD will ask is whether your school schedule would prevent you from accepting suitable work. 2. For Disability Insurance (SDI): When you transition to pregnancy disability, your school enrollment has no direct impact on your eligibility. SDI is based on medical necessity certified by your doctor, typically 4 weeks before your due date and 6-8 weeks after delivery (longer if complications or C-section). The important thing is that you can't collect both UI and SDI simultaneously. When your doctor certifies you're unable to work due to your pregnancy, you'll need to stop certifying for UI and switch to SDI.

This is so helpful! I was confused about how these programs work together. My classes are all online and flexible timing, so hopefully that won't affect my UI. When should I apply for the pregnancy disability? My doctor mentioned 4 weeks before my due date would be when I should stop working.

I went thru this last year!! Make sure u tell UI about school but if its flexible schedule it wont matter. The SDI pregnancy part is totally separate from UI. You'll need ur doctor to fill out the form DE 2501 and say when u cant work anymore. Usually 36 weeks but depends on ur job and health.

Oh thank you for sharing your experience! Did you have any issues transitioning from UI to SDI? How long did the SDI application take to process once you submitted it?

It took about 2 weeks to get approved for SDI after I applied. The transition was pretty smooth but theres a waiting period of 7 days where you dont get paid. So don't certify for UI that week! Thats the mistake I made and had to deal with an overpayment thing later. Also the SDI pays more than UI usually.

I tried reaching EDD for WEEKS when I was pregnant and transitioning from UI to SDI. Literally could not get through to anyone to answer my questions about the overlap. Finally found Claimyr.com which got me connected to an actual EDD rep in 20 minutes instead of spending days calling. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ?si=1hcSq3KFtCr4oAmd The rep confirmed you can't receive both benefits at the same time, and you need to stop certifying for UI the same week you start SDI. Also, the school thing affects UI but has zero impact on pregnancy disability eligibility.

is this legit? ive never heard of it before and im always worried about giving my info to random sites...

Yeah it's legit! They don't ask for any sensitive info like SSN or anything. Just basic contact info so they can call you when they get an EDD rep on the line. Saved me so much frustration.

I DID THIS EXACT THING LAST YEAR and EDD made me PAY BACK $2,400 because I was still certifying for UI when I started getting SDI!!!! They don't tell you this stuff clearly!!! Make sure you STOP UI when SDI starts!!!!!

Omg that's exactly what I'm afraid of! Thanks for the warning. I'll make sure to stop UI completely before my SDI starts.

To add some clarity here: 1. For your UI benefits: California law requires that you report any school enrollment to EDD. However, if your schooling doesn't interfere with your ability to accept work, it shouldn't disqualify you. You'll need to complete the DE 1326E form (or answer questions during your certification) regarding your training. 2. For pregnancy-related SDI: You can apply up to 49 days before your expected disability period (typically when your doctor says you should stop working). Most healthcare providers certify pregnancy disability beginning 4 weeks before expected delivery and 6-8 weeks after (longer for C-sections). 3. The transition: You cannot receive UI and SDI for the same period. Once your doctor certifies you cannot work due to pregnancy, you must stop claiming UI and switch to SDI. 4. After delivery: You might be eligible for Paid Family Leave (PFL) for bonding time after your recovery period. Being in school has no bearing on your SDI eligibility whatsoever - that's strictly based on medical necessity.

Thank you for the detailed information! One more question - do I need to actually close my UI claim when switching to SDI, or just stop certifying for those weeks?

You don't need to formally close your UI claim - just stop certifying for benefits when your SDI begins. Your claim will remain open until its benefit year ends, but you won't be paid for weeks you don't certify. This actually gives you flexibility if you need to return to UI after SDI ends (assuming your benefit year hasn't expired and you have remaining balance).

I actually went through something similar except I was getting disability first then tried unemployment after. The whole thing is so confusing!! I think the school thing only matters for unemployment because they want to make sure you're available to work. For the pregnancy part, it's just about if your doctor says you can't work anymore.

Thank you everyone for the helpful responses! I'll definitely update my UI claim about the school program right away. It's good to know that it shouldn't affect my disability claim when the time comes. I'll apply for SDI about a month before my doctor wants me to stop working, and I'll make sure to stop certifying for UI at that point to avoid any overpayment issues. This was all so confusing to me, but I feel much clearer now about how these programs work together (or rather, don't overlap).
